Labour isn't working - Thread 5

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working!

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Can somebody explain this new school intake policy please? I’ve googled and been to the BBC and Sky sites but I can’t see anything.

Is it actually new? Is it genuine policy, within a bill etc? Who announced/promoted it? What’s proposed and where?

Thanks - I did have a good look before asking.

It's the plan to update the equality act which would necessitate a remodelling of public services to flatten advantages achieved by socio-economic class - the consequences of which would include leapfrogging working class kids into schools in middle class catchment areas and displacing local middle class kids.

The article includes other flattenings in public services, including the NHS or public services employment

These are policies that are being explored by the labour party and consultation for that change came to a conclusion in June.

Given the speed with which some ideologically charged ideas have been jettisoned through the policy stages with this government without much time for a cautionary, 'hang on a minute', I wouldn't be take false comfort from it's current lack of development.

Thank you. That’s v helpful.

I’m sorry to ask again for something, but is there a good link I could start from?

Generally, I can’t believe Labour’s better off urban - especially London - base would wear this. The whole point of the Labour middle class supporting comprehensives is so that they can game the system.

There are also a lot of aspirational ethnic minority votes at risk here. And what’s the future for grammars?

I suspect this bonkers nonsense will be quietly trashed.

You’d think so but they have a tendency to be entirely cloth eared and barrelling on regardless.

They certainly do. I wouldn't put anything past them at this point.

Just pondering how this would affect church schools? That's how we gamed the system so to speak. Any idea @twistyizzy ?

Sorry no, not sure apart from forcing any under subscribed religious schools to take non-religious pupils. Most religious schools aren't the poor performing ones though.

Right, found the link - thank you - and am more across this now. I also see that pps already made the points I did. Apologies.

I am less sure than some, though, that even Starmer’s useless, no-mark, hypocritical, student-uniony government could get away with this. It’s completely nuts and, for Labour, self-harming.

I should add that I’ve no skin in the game: all of my children have left school or are at school.

Really? Because they've just stopped any kids other than what they call WC children from internships in the Civil Servicd.
They hate the middle classes.

No skin in the game for me either, we have outrun them thank goodness.

I wouldn't put anything past this government after what we've seen so far. I've completely lost faith in them doing the right thing.

They do but so far pro Labour have revelled in other people being hit with VAT.

Now some mc will be out of the system and probably still bat for them. But many won’t be. The parents in state who go for the best they can will be some of their core vote.

Arrearing50 · 08/08/2025 12:37

I agree they hate parent power - the SEN reforms I yack on about are about trying to restrict EHCP provision from MC parents to distribute to those with higher need. There’s a definite labour group think that some people have too much of the public services pie, and rather than overall funding and school diversity being the massive issues, they want to redistribute existing resources to most need.

which is all very well and laudable until your dc’s support crumbles and they crash their exams…and end up on the young NEET stats. When labour will eventually force you into any old rubbish job.

TBH, and I haven’t researched it or have any on-the-ground knowledge, but I’d see this as a gimmick. I’m sure the civil service will carry on recruiting as it always has done. I doubt internships make any difference.

Alpha minds to the Treasury and FCO, other recruits elsewhere. But it’ll still be a middle class achievers’ world in the civil service.

Oh, definitely agree. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Starmer’s Labour is deluded and spiteful.

The harsh realities of governing are already sinking their fangs into Starmer’s Lord Ali-clad backside though. Even he will have to change course in the face of huge electoral damage.

Plus he’s a spineless little man: a delegation of Labour MPs from seats at risk from this rubbish and he’ll cave.

And it’s interesting more generally, I think. Labour lost a very safe seat to Reform over immigration and other white working class concerns. Yet they continue with this ‘equality’ dogma because Labour’s all north London dinner party in its politics. Once they piss off a lot of the left middle class because Josh and Emily will have to go to a sink school, they’re politically naked.

I am just grappling with how they can vilify some for supposedly targeting children but it is all LMAO at other children being targeted. They're all children after all. It's not ridiculous. It's double standards and hypocritical.

ETA that was meant for Phantom and the pointy finger ridiculousness comment.
