Inspired by this article in the Times:

https://www.thetimes.com/life-style/parenting/article/why-cousins-are-dying-out-it-matters-more-than-you-think-d6vr0rgtx

It's behind a paywall sorry but basically it says due to declining birthrates children born now are much less likely to have lots of cousins. I think down from average 7 to 5 but falling quite a bit. The article argues that this means children have less peers their age in family gatherings to play with and smaller networks.

I find it very interesting as I have 13 cousins but I'm not very close to any of them as an adult. My DC have 4 for now but probably 7 or 8 once everyone is done. I'm quite glad they have quite a few cousins but perhaps we are becoming more unusual as all our siblings have kids or intend to.

Why cousins are a dying breed — it matters more than you might think

In the 1970s a British teenager had seven on average. Today it’s five and projected to fall further, with consequences that can be profound

My dc have 6 cousins most of whom live within 10 minutes of us, only one having moved away.

i have 4 maternal cousins whom I am very close to and see regularly, holidays, birthdays, Christmas etc but no contact with paternal cousins due to distance, divorce etc

Dh has 30 cousins and is in regular contact with them all. They live all over the world but we keep in contact regularly and see them whenever they come over here and have visited some of them in their countries too. Whenever we meet up it’s always easy and relaxed as though they live down the street and our dc instantly get on with their dc with no awkwardness etc.

Feel very lucky

3 I think. Unless more have been produced. We have no interest in any of them. My youngest hasn't met them and nor will he I haven't met 2 of them as an aunt and won't.

I wouldn't know mine unless they were pointed out.

Smugbadger · 27/07/2025 19:22

I have 14 first cousins - and my DC will have six (all on my side. Neither of my husbands two sisters have or will have children)

HollyhockDays · 27/07/2025 19:23

I have 24 - my dad was one of five children. I have one sister and DH a sister and brother but only my sister has kids (4).

Cominghomesoon · 27/07/2025 19:24

Both my parents were one of 6, so 10 uncles/aunts. I have 28 cousins (including those who have passed. I am the 'youngest' cousin on my dad's side and I am in my 60s!.

bookworm14 · 27/07/2025 19:25

My daughter has four. I have none, which was very usual when I was growing up. Parents both have siblings but none had kids of their own.

SheWaits · 27/07/2025 19:26

I have 5 but have no contact with one of them (and never will), so 4 really.

My daughter has no first cousins due to me being an only child and my DH's siblings thinking having children was beneath them (yes really, that's how they termed it, not me!) however via my 4 cousins who we see she has 8 second cousins and they think of themselves as "cousins" without making that distinction, for the most part.

namechangeGOT · 27/07/2025 19:26

My son has 2 cousins! I have 3.

ElsaSnow · 27/07/2025 19:26

My mum was one of 4 and my dad was one of 6 so I had loads of cousins - around 17 cousins in total I think and most were similar ages! I used to see 8 on a regular basis when we were children. Now, as adults I see 2 of them maybe a couple of times a year.

DH had 6 cousins - he used to see them a lot as a child but as an adult he doesn’t see them - the next time he does will prob be a funeral.

Our 3 children - 2 are teens, one is 7, have finally got 2 cousins but they are a baby and toddler so they haven’t had the experience of playing with cousins like me and DH did as children. It is sad but we had our children young and DH’s sister had hers late and my brother hasn’t had any yet.

raininginlanzarote · 27/07/2025 19:27

Me; 4, DH; 6, my kids; 7 however they wouldn’t know them if they saw them, due to being 15-20 years younger and living miles away.

DoneitagainhaventI · 27/07/2025 19:28

I'm from a very dysfunctional family .
I have 3 cousins . But tbh although I wish them well as fellow human beings, I don't feel love or affection for them.
My son has 4 cousins and I think he feels the same as I do about mine.
I used to always envy close families and wished mine was an affectionate close loving family that stuck together but quite honestly now I really dont care because my experience has taught me that families are negative hurtful things.

chickensandbees · 27/07/2025 19:29

I have 8 cousins, see most of them every year or two, think this will probably reduce when our DPs all die, but I'll stay in touch with a few...Facebook helps with that.
DH has 4 I think, I've only met one of them and they're not close at all. Don't even have their addresses etc.
DC have 2 and see them a few times a year but not very close.

MammyofaSuperBaby1993 · 27/07/2025 19:29

I have 5 cousins, all old enough to be my parents and at least 8 second cousins who are around my age and younger but we were never close.
My DC have 6 cousins but they only see 1

mamaduckbone · 27/07/2025 19:29

I have hundreds but don't see any of them (slight exaggeration but at least 30 or 40 including halves and steps)
My Dh has no contact with any of his extended family.

My dc have 9, plus 2 steps on dh's side who they are closer to than any of the blood cousins. Their cousins on my side (6 of the 9) are quite a lot older so although they do see them they aren't especially close. We have big get togethers with the cousins on dh's side and went on holiday with them a lot when the dcs were younger. I like that they have a relationship with their cousins.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/07/2025 19:29

I have five cousins, all younger than me. My DC have 5 cousins also, but are in the 'middle of the pack', as it were

silverspringer · 27/07/2025 19:30

Maybe 20 first cousins. Nearly all of those have children and grandchildren. So there’s fucking loads of them.

stargirl1701 · 27/07/2025 19:30

I have more than 40 cousins.

My Dc have 2.

ShesTheAlbatross · 27/07/2025 19:30

I have 16. My DC have 1, I think they may end up with 3 or 4 if my siblings and siblings-in-law have the children they want to have, which obviously may not happen.

mumda · 27/07/2025 19:31

I have 7 cousins. Rarely saw them as a child really.
My son has three.

Baby26 · 27/07/2025 19:31

I have 6 cousins. My child has 4 (so far..)

Greendress22 · 27/07/2025 19:33

My Husband has 5 cousins and I have 9. Our children have 0, they don’t know any different and are very happy. As adults we both hardly talk to our cousins, just weddings and funerals.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 27/07/2025 19:34

I have 27
DC have 20
