How many cousins do you have/ your DC have?

Inspired by this article in the Times:

https://www.thetimes.com/life-style/parenting/article/why-cousins-are-dying-out-it-matters-more-than-you-think-d6vr0rgtx

It's behind a paywall sorry but basically it says due to declining birthrates children born now are much less likely to have lots of cousins. I think down from average 7 to 5 but falling quite a bit. The article argues that this means children have less peers their age in family gatherings to play with and smaller networks.

I find it very interesting as I have 13 cousins but I'm not very close to any of them as an adult. My DC have 4 for now but probably 7 or 8 once everyone is done. I'm quite glad they have quite a few cousins but perhaps we are becoming more unusual as all our siblings have kids or intend to.

Why cousins are a dying breed — it matters more than you might think

In the 1970s a British teenager had seven on average. Today it’s five and projected to fall further, with consequences that can be profound

I have 11 cousins.

DD (20) also has 11. Should have been 12 but one sadly passed away.

I'm in touch with most my cousins but wasn't ever very close to them. I don't have any who are similar to me in age.

DD is very close to one of hers.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 28/07/2025 15:15

I have ten but never see any of them.
DC have three.

Musicalmistress · 28/07/2025 15:39

I have 7, my ex H has 7 and DH has 23 (8 from one aunt on mums side and the rest from his dads side who is one of 9!)
My DD has 9 cousins - so more than both me and her Dad.
DSD/DSS only have 3 on my DH side and none on their mum’s so WAY less than their DDad.

In a generation or twos time, there will be vanishingly few people who have dozens and dozens of cousins.

Yes if people have lots of cousins I'd be interested to know how old they were. My Dad has lots but is in his 60s.

I have 4 cousins.

My DC (age 11 and 6) have 16 cousins (age range 16 to 6 months) and probably more to come.

FlatStanley50 · 28/07/2025 15:53

I have 7 cousins. Five are much older (closer to my parents age), 2 are my age but haven’t seen them in 30 years (used to get on well when we saw them but grew up in different countries and then counties).
DD has 9 cousins, again doesn’t see them much. 4 are older and are v good with her but more like aunties/ uncles. The others she gets on well with when we see them.

My mum had hundreds of cousins as both her parents were one of 10 and they all grew up together/ holidaying together. So things are definitely different now in that respect.

Loulo6098 · 28/07/2025 16:21

I'm very close to my cousins on both sides. As a result, my DC have "cousins" beyond first cousins. They are close to the children of my first cousins, as well as their first cousins on both sides.

It's great, they always have someone to play with and parties to attend. They dynamics are different with cousins vs friends, since you can't just 'drop' them if they're annoying or difficult (it's not acceptable in our culture to abandon family over trivial things, you have to work out your issues as best as possible).

Greebosmum · 28/07/2025 16:22

I have 25 (parents both from big families). I have never met some of them. My children have 11 (slightly smaller families) grand children have none as only one child has children and their dear father did a runner and they never met any of his family.

CMOTDibbler · 28/07/2025 16:47

I have 7, ds has 7. Dh has 2

MargaretThursday · 28/07/2025 18:01

I had 8 cousins, or 8.5 if you counted my uncle's step son, but they didn't marry until he was mid/late teens and I only met him once.

My dc have 10, so more than I did.

avocadotofu · 28/07/2025 18:05

I have 33 cousins; one on my mom’s side and 32 on my dad’s side. My dad’s family is Irish Catholic which why I have so many.

My son has 6 cousins.

whitewinespritzerandastraw · 28/07/2025 18:10

I have about 15 first cousins.

only in contact with 4 of them, and none of them close.

Lots of second cousins, but again, no contact.

My kids have no first cousins. They have a few second cousins who we see a few times a year.

I would like them to have more, but can’t be helped.

TabbyCatInAPoolofSunshine · 28/07/2025 18:11

My children have more cousins than I do but less than their dad. None of us really grew up with our cousins - both families seem to have a history of being quite mobile, going back several generations, so everyone is scattered over several countries.

Where I live there are second generation only children marrying only children and having just one child, which is a little more extreme because there are zero siblings and cousins. The only child married to only child women of my generation are often caring to some extent for their own elderly parents and their in-laws and having to give up work to do so - on the other hand there's a lot of property coming down to fewer people and my kids know peers who've simply been given a deceased grandparents' house (only grandchild, parents inheriting 100% from both sides). Swings and roundabouts I guess but it's quite intense.

HotCrossPuns · 28/07/2025 18:27

I have 27 cousins. I wouldn't recognise most of them if I met them on the street. I have no idea how many my partner has.

My children have 5 cousins.

Rictasmorticia · 28/07/2025 18:50

I have 20 cousins. My mum was one of ten . Kids have 8.

SquigglePigs · 28/07/2025 20:05

If we're talking first cousins then I have 8, albeit 2 we're born when I was an adult.

DH has none and neither does DD. Outside chance the situation may change for DD but looking increasingly unlikely.

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 28/07/2025 20:35

I just had to count them all, I don't think I left anyone out accidentally.

I have 15 cousins.

Three of my children have 31 cousins and the other two have 22.

HansHolbein · 28/07/2025 20:36

I have 7.

My children have none, and probably won’t have any.
