How many cousins do you have/ your DC have?

Inspired by this article in the Times:

https://www.thetimes.com/life-style/parenting/article/why-cousins-are-dying-out-it-matters-more-than-you-think-d6vr0rgtx

It's behind a paywall sorry but basically it says due to declining birthrates children born now are much less likely to have lots of cousins. I think down from average 7 to 5 but falling quite a bit. The article argues that this means children have less peers their age in family gatherings to play with and smaller networks.

I find it very interesting as I have 13 cousins but I'm not very close to any of them as an adult. My DC have 4 for now but probably 7 or 8 once everyone is done. I'm quite glad they have quite a few cousins but perhaps we are becoming more unusual as all our siblings have kids or intend to.

Why cousins are a dying breed — it matters more than you might think

In the 1970s a British teenager had seven on average. Today it’s five and projected to fall further, with consequences that can be profound

I have 7 cousins but never see any of them, apart from a few Facebook updates. They each have 2 or three children but only met half in person maybe once?

IsItAllMenopause · 28/07/2025 10:52

I have 11 cousins. My DC have 16...so we are bucking the trend! 😁

indoorplantqueen · 28/07/2025 11:47

I have 26 cousins. My dc has 8 cousins, one on paternal side and rest on maternal. Unlikely to have any more.

My girls have 12 first cousins. I have/had 35.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 28/07/2025 12:25

I have far too many to count. My DC have 5 cousins (all my side).

Crazyladee · 28/07/2025 12:31

I don't have any. My Dad was an only child and my Mum has a sister who didn't want children.
My DC have six cousins.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 28/07/2025 12:42

I have 5 cousins - from my DF side, we saw them often growing up, but have seen none of them since we became adults. My DF is in contact with one sibling, the other died years ago (but after we drifted apart from our cousins). He only had 1 cousin.
My DH also has 5 cousins from his DF side and we still see them at least once a year and would invite/get invited to celebrations etc. The age span is around 10 years.
Our DM are only children but mine had loads of cousins (20+) and is still in contact with those that are still with us (not many now), no idea about MIL as I could never unpick who was from which generation.

My DC have 4 cousins on my side and 6 from DH, apart from 1, they are 8-24 years younger than my DC. My DCs also both live far away from where they grew up. Whilst they keep up-to-date with them through family chats and meet up at events at least a couple of times a year, they are not close.

Neither of my DC have their own DC yet, one has a partner who is an only child, the other is still single. I can't see either having more than 1 or 2 DC at the moment, but only time will tell.

NellieJean · 28/07/2025 12:44

I have six, DH however thinks he has over fifty most of whom he wouldn’t know if he fell over them. It may be relevant that he is Irish.

FrenchLavendar · 28/07/2025 12:47

I have just two cousins. Both of them live overseas and I've only met them a handful of times, the last time being about 15 years ago.

My children have 7 cousins, some of whom they see a couple of times a year if we have a family get together. Two of them live overseas.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 28/07/2025 12:51

I have 7 (plus 4/8 childfree aunts/uncles), husband has 2.

My son already has 4, likely to increase.

CreationNat1on · 28/07/2025 12:55

I ll probably win, I have....... Drumroll 40 first cousins.

My children have 7 (my mum has 9 grandchildren).

StarCourt · 28/07/2025 13:12

i have 10 cousins and DD16 has 7

scaredfriend · 28/07/2025 13:15

I have 12. My DC have 3 and are likely to have - at most - 1 more.

My parents were each one of three children. My DFs siblings had 4 and 2 children respectively. My DMs siblings each had 3.

My DBro has 1 child (they may be trying for another but they’re in their 40s so not sure if they’re ‘one and done’ or not and it’s not my place to ask). DHs DS has two children. Won’t have any more.

loveev · 28/07/2025 13:26

I have 45 cousins , my mum was 1 of 9 and my dad 1 of 7.

my kids have 10 cousins

loveev · 28/07/2025 13:28

If I count my step dad’s side I have an additional 10 cousins .

LadyR77 · 28/07/2025 13:30

I have 5 cousins but never seen them other than for things like weddings/funerals.

My son only has 1 cousin, and they see a lot of each other, although DS is 12 and my nephew is 6 so there's a big age gap (which will become less of an issue once they're adults, and I hope they'll still meet up regularly then).

ShiftySquirrel · 28/07/2025 13:31

I have 8 first cousins. DH has probably 30 first cousins.
Our DC have zero first cousins.

Both my and DH's siblings are child free. Having grown up with more extended family about it feels very odd.
Luckily we have contact with lots of wider family so it's not a totally linear family tree.

Meadowfinch · 28/07/2025 13:33

I'm 62 and have five siblings and 7 cousins.

My ds has a half-sister and 11 cousins, and at least 6 second cousins

Totomanoto · 28/07/2025 13:33

I have around 20 I think (youngest child and most were almost adults/adults by the time I was born) not really close to any of them.
my children have 12 cousins, close to 5 of them, the others are teens/adults and not interested in kids 😅

SupposesRoses · 28/07/2025 13:48

39 first cousins, 37 living. My children have 3, though they might still get a few more.

sciaticafanatica · 28/07/2025 14:07

I have 22 on my mums side
2 on my dads
my children have 4

feelingalittlehorse · 28/07/2025 14:08

14 first cousins here- all on one side.

Tbh, we don’t live nearby, and even if we did, we wouldn’t get on. So makes not a difference to me at all.

Superhansrantowindsor · 28/07/2025 14:09

I’ve got 3. Not seen them in about twenty years. DC have loads but are either much older or much younger.

Comedycook · 28/07/2025 14:09

In a generation or twos time, there will be vanishingly few people who have dozens and dozens of cousins.

SparkyBlue · 28/07/2025 15:08

I have about 60 first cousins (big Irish family) and some of them are more like nieces and nephews as they are the DC of my mothers youngest siblings. My own DC have three first cousins which is just so weird to me
