How many cousins do you have/ your DC have?

Inspired by this article in the Times:

https://www.thetimes.com/life-style/parenting/article/why-cousins-are-dying-out-it-matters-more-than-you-think-d6vr0rgtx

It's behind a paywall sorry but basically it says due to declining birthrates children born now are much less likely to have lots of cousins. I think down from average 7 to 5 but falling quite a bit. The article argues that this means children have less peers their age in family gatherings to play with and smaller networks.

I find it very interesting as I have 13 cousins but I'm not very close to any of them as an adult. My DC have 4 for now but probably 7 or 8 once everyone is done. I'm quite glad they have quite a few cousins but perhaps we are becoming more unusual as all our siblings have kids or intend to.

Why cousins are a dying breed — it matters more than you might think

In the 1970s a British teenager had seven on average. Today it’s five and projected to fall further, with consequences that can be profound

I also want to say I know all of my 30 cousins, I know where they all live, their spouses and kids if they have any, pretty much all of their birthdays (or at least their birthday months). I love them all 🥰

TotallyKerplunked · 27/07/2025 19:07

I have 0 paternal cousins and 2 maternal cousins (who I barely know as they are 20+ years older than me as my mom was an oops baby). My kids have 0 paternal and 4 maternal.

chuzzlewitthechipmunk · 27/07/2025 19:07

I have 3, two I haven’t seen for 25 years or so due to a family dispute (I’m assuming their mother said that if they went to our grandfather’s funeral they’d be disowned, but they were late twenties by then and it would have been good to see them) and one other who is only 20… all on the same side so my young cousin has never met the older pair.

my two have two cousins who they see maybe once a year. BIL has never made much effort with his brother (DH) or parents.

3 me and 18 for my kids.

AngelinaFibres · 27/07/2025 19:09

My parents were both only children so I had no cousins. My children have a few on my exhusbands side but have no contact. My grandchildren have no cousins

Twodogsonthecouch · 27/07/2025 19:09

I have 15, close to all of them. My DH has loads. Probably about 40 between the 2 sides. He’s not close to them. I have only ever met about 5 of them and we’ve been married for over 30 years.
my DC have 6 on my side and 14 on my DH’s side. They are very close to my side and close to a good few on the other side too but wider spread of ages

minsmum · 27/07/2025 19:10

I have 48 first cousins my children have 6 first cousins

ARichtGoodDram · 27/07/2025 19:11

My DDs have 4 on their dad's side. All the kids have 5 on my side but only contact with one.

I have 6 cousins. Only in contact with 2.

DH has something like 62 first cousins 😂 FIL was one of 15 and MIL one of 9. He's very close with a fair number of them - his friendship group is cousins and a few mates. It's lovely.
Amusingly at his Granny's hundredth birthday meal the grandkids were at various "kids table" and that included DH's older cousin who is 60 and a grandfather himself 😂😂

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/07/2025 19:11

My children have 4. I have 37. Start adding other half’s and kids it all gets a bit out of control

LeeshaPaper · 27/07/2025 19:11

I have about 30. Dh has about 50.
DC have 4

Gingerkittykat · 27/07/2025 19:11

I've got 9 first cousins but and my sister are the youngest in our generation so some of them have kids who are around the same age as us.

I'm close to 4 of them, barely know 4 of them and 1 died.

My DD has 2 cousins on my side and 5 on her dad's side. She hasn't even met one of them and has only met the others a few times on her dad's side.

She is exceptionally close to her female cousin on my side, they grew up in the same village and went to the same school and are only 18 months in age apart. She sees her frequently and they also spend a lot of time sending each other messages and voicenotes.

MummySam2017 · 27/07/2025 19:11

I have 6 cousins, not in contact with any now. My kids have 7 and they are very close x

DorothyWainwright · 27/07/2025 19:12

I have 7.

My dc's have 3, although they only ever see 1 of them. The others are much much older.

RampantIvy · 27/07/2025 19:12

I have 5, DD has 5.

DH had loads more but as he is 73 not all of them are still alive.

stample · 27/07/2025 19:13

I have 3 cousins on my maternal side (15+ yers younger than me) and 6 on my paternal side (20+ years older than me) which I never see, have t seen them in years tbh. DH has 3 cousins who live abroad and our DC have no cousins

MeringueOutang · 27/07/2025 19:13

I have 9. DC have none.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/07/2025 19:13

I have 12- 6 on each side. DSIS is the youngest one on both sides. Our eldest cousin on our maternal side is 27 years older than she is and his DC are the same age.
DH has 8 cousins on his paternal side but is unsure how many on his maternal side. His DM was raised by grandparents (and didn't find out until adulthood) and the people who she called brothers and sisters were really her uncles and aunts. So it's all a bit hazy.

93percentage · 27/07/2025 19:14

I have 7 but 1 died. I’m close to 3 of them and consider them to be more like siblings.

MissAmbrosia · 27/07/2025 19:14

I have 8 on my mums side and 14 on my dad's. I am FB friends with most of them but haven't seen most of them for years. Dd has 3 on my side and 8 or 9 on her dad's.

CorvusPurpureus · 27/07/2025 19:15

I've got about 10 from my mother's family I think (it's a bit murky because DM's family rather went in for feuding & NC long before it was a thing!).

Most are 10-20 years older as DM was the tail end of her large family, so only 2 similar in age. I'm friendly with one of them; adored the other when we were kids but he's chosen to shut down most family communication since his dps died, & I understand the reasons so I leave him be.

Cousins on df's side are significantly younger & we didn't have much to do with them - I politely catch up with them both at funerals, tbh.

My dc have 6 first cousins, are in regular contact with one (who is lovely), occasionally meet up with 3 more, & are also on friendly terms with the dc of my friendly first cousin.

I think moving about a lot & divorce has definitely walloped the various cousin links in my family. I live in a country where cousins are super important, as close as siblings, & I do think it's sad that we don't have that so much in the UK.

AliasGrape · 27/07/2025 19:15

I have 2 I see and keep in regular touch with. 3 more who grew up on the other side of the world, now in occasional Facebook contact and met one of them for the first time 2 years ago when she happened to be in the same country as us on holiday.

DH has 3, last saw them 10+ years ago.

I have quite a complicated family background/ set up so they’re not technically cousins if you looked at the family tree but there are 8 children I’m an aunt to, and are DD’s cousins as far as we are all concerned. She spends lots of time with them, and is particularly close to 3 of them. I’m happy about this as she’s an only child and these relationships mean a lot to her.

She has 1 cousin on DH’s side. He’s in the states and they haven’t met yet - we are all getting together for the first time this year. They face time quite often yet, they’re almost exactly the same age and it’s been funny seeing their relationship develop they love a little chat now, I’m looking forward to them meeting properly this summer.

Helpwithdivorce · 27/07/2025 19:15

I have 8 and my kids have 10 currently with the possibility of it increasing so not true in our case

HairyToity · 27/07/2025 19:15

I have 7, my DC have 6.

Drivingthevengabus · 27/07/2025 19:17

I have 4 maternal and at least 8 paternal cousins. Not close to any of them. Not for any dramatic reasons, just circumstances.

My kids have 4 cousins, they're almost sibling close to 2 of them (my sister's kids) and see the other 2 pretty often but there is a bigger age gap so less in common currently.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/07/2025 19:17

I have 9 cousins. I fall at the younger end, but none of us are particularly close.

So far, I just have a niece and a nephew, and they don't have any cousins yet.
