Ozzy Osbourne - we shouldn't speak ill of the dead but has his domestic abuse and serial infidelity been glossed over in all the eulogies?

Maybe because he was a rocker firm the 70s but it seems Ozzy's real character flaws have been warped into a 'charismatic hell raiser ' image to be admired.

In reality should we also be critical about his actions and views?

I thought Sharon played up to the crowd and cameras yetsedsay. Unpopular opinion but there have been many public showings of grief, even Princess Diana’s boys had more composure at their young age. Look at Diogo Jotas young wife left with 3 tiny children/babies, days after their wedding, she could stand on her own without needing to be propped up.

I mean it's absolutely ridiculous to compare one person's grief to another. I was completely stoic through my nan's funeral, a woman who practically raised me, while at my partner's grandfather's funeral a few months earlier, a man I'd only met twice, I spent the whole service holding back tears.

I do think it's fair though - if badly timed - to note that for everything he put her through, Sharon wasn't exactly squeaky clean in their relationship. She spent years wheeling him out to work all over the world when he was in no condition to do so, feeding his vices when he should have been in rehab. Putting him (and their kids) on TV in front of the world when many (including his own daughter) thought he lacked capacity to give informed consent.

It's been accepted in the industry for years that the whole biting the head off a dove when he got his record deal thing was her idea. I expect lots will come out in the wash now that Ozzy has passed.

He did some horrible things to her, and she exploited him for years. Doesn't mean they didn't love each other.

Prince of Darkness?
Seriously?

This stuff is just preposterous.

It does not excuse abuse or animal cruelty. I don’t think there is anything wrong with observing and discussing the man as a whole. Nor should his darker sides be air brushed out.

You have a different idea of love to me.

I think it’s very similar to when Kobe Bryant died. No one was allowed to mention his brutal SA of a young woman.

It’s because Ozzy is a celebrity.

I guess we all do, right?

Look, I'm not saying I find the things either of them did acceptable. I certainly wouldn't have hung around in a relationship like that. But they did, for whatever reason.

Everyone did mention it though. Here we are mentioning it now. There's pages and pages of people talking about Ozzy's violence, cheating etc. I haven't seen an obituary that hasn't mentioned it.

liveforsummer · 01/08/2025 11:20

I think the difference between Ozzy and many of the other examples given in the post is that Ozzy admitted it, owned it, spoke openly about it and worked to change it. The people involved have forgiven him whilst still acknowledging it happened. It hasn’t been glossed over but he changed!

Doctors didn't warn women of 'risky sex' drug urges - BBC News https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cgkmrev6z2mo

I wonder if Ozzy took this drug for his Parkinson s disease, it would explain a lot.

Headshot of Lucy. She has long, dark, straight hair and is wearing a navy blue sweatshirt. She is photographed outside, on a green bench, with shrubs behind her.

Doctors didn't warn women of 'risky sex' drug urges

Patients given drugs for movement disorders like restless leg syndrome say their behaviour changed entirely.

He (and all rock stars) gets more leeway because it's almost expected of the job to be a hellraiser. They live wild lifestyles so it's going to be a lot harder to be squeaky clean than the average joe.

Interesting Ozzy was the most viewed Wikipedia article last week with 9.7 million views, while Hulk Hogan came a distant second with 4.9 million.

The global status Ozzy had as a much beloved icon meant people largely overlooked his transgressions.

Should 'don't speak ill of the dead' apply to Jimmy Saville too?

It astounds me that the media go after some people relentlessly until they are on the brink or worse (Caroline Flack springs to mind, even Philip Schofield who commited no actual crime although he was obviously in the wrong). But someone who has been in prison, tortured animals, a terrible Dad, strangled their wife to the point they nearly died etc is put up on a pedestal with a super shiny gold halo.

It's a strange old world.

brad Pitt also seems to have got away with some dreadful and abusive behaviour. It’s horrendous how so much is landed on some people and others just get away with it and move on with out consequences.

CreationNat1on · 02/08/2025 12:08

Johnny Depp is another example

ILoveBrum · 02/08/2025 12:29

What has Brad Pitt done @FurForksSake??

FurForksSake · 02/08/2025 12:48

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2nde444d0o.amp there is a lot out there about him being abusive and the children dropping his name or refusing to see him. I realise he has never been convicted of this, but it’s interesting how little his alleged abuse and behaviour towards his family has been discussed.

Sharon had a father who was very violent.

Even worse than Ozzy was the former drummer of Led Zeppelin. They put up a statue to him.

ILoveBrum · 02/08/2025 18:27

Thanks @FurForksSake - I had heard that before but thought you were referencing that there must be more as that always seemed to me like 6 of 1 & half dozen of another. Parental alienation also crossed my mind as Angelina grew up estranged from
her dad & stuck very much with her mum through that acrimonious divorce, so that’s her normal & she’s done the same with her kids.

PinkMoonRising · 03/08/2025 12:34

I think Sharon really adored him though to stay with him. Apparently he did shoot something like 17 cats of theirs dead when he was high on drugs, Sharon came home to find him rocking under the table and dead cats all over. He said he thought it was a rubber bat but it was actually a live (concussed maybe?) bat a fan had thrown on stage.
he had 2 children with his ex wife and she had adopted another prior to meeting Ozzy (I think)
there is a show called “god bless Ozzy osbourne” you can download on sky.

Reminds me of the Debbie McGee question, "what attracted you to the millionaire Paul Daniels.". Funny how bad behaviour from very rich men is more acceptable than the same from a poor man.

He wasn't universally liked, bit like Ozzy. So some people could question what the attraction was or in Sharon's case the adoration. I don't know if she adored him, a previous poster stated that

why are you attempting to link these two people.your not thie first -I’m sure Sharon has decent lawyers to track down those sort of insinuations and deal with people accordingly

I'm not linking them at all they've nothing to do with each other, I'm saying people will use the phrase don't speak ill of the dead when it suits them but it doesn't apply to everyone

Also airbrushed a whole 3 kids before Sharon. Bat biting was the least of thier worries.

Yip peek a boo,, one of us passed I just found out, not sure about other and don't know details really vague

BluntPeer1111 · 28/11/2025 13:35

I guess there must be more to it
