I can see said structure from my house 😀
I live near the highest market town in South Yorkshire
Top Gear filmed an episode there a few years ago and delighted in taking the mickey out of the name.
The secondary school there was founded more than 600 years ago and still has the same name.

Penistone! Got to be! Never saw the episode of Top Gear. Will have to look for it.

Who killed the bear?

Are you in the forest? I don't actually know which village town but heard the story!

VintageCider · 20/07/2025 20:34

We are part of a much larger city but people here like to pretend we’re not really a part of said city.

We have the largest, or one of the largest, urban parks in Europe.

Our MP considers himself above the riffraff (and went to court over some words).

ThePussy · 20/07/2025 20:40

William Penn died in my village.

@SelkieSeal and @Ukholidaysaregreat not Emley or Denby Dale, but only a couple of miles from each.

@RampantIvy we went to the school's 6th form open day and they were very proud to tell us that they are the second oldest school in England (although Google sugguests otherwise).

Worthing - Dome Cinema

ragandbonewoman · 20/07/2025 21:21

Large seaside town with thousands of visitors in the summer. But no uber cars, no McDonald’s, KFC, Greggs, Subway or Burger King. In fact no fast food chains exist here. No Ocado or Waitrose either. No deliveroo or uber eats. You need to head 20 miles or more in either direction to get these. Public transport is awful. No train station, bus every three hours. Pretty happy community though, the youngsters that leave often come back and settle if they can afford it, to raise their own kids

Laska2Meryls · 20/07/2025 21:22

A medieval woman owned and ruled our area . Living in her own castle. She was married off at aged 11 but soon widowed . One of the first women to actually own lands in her own right without having to bow down to a man . She was one of the richest heiresses of her time and was known as a Lord ... a fair ruler to her tenants . She successfully fought off an English king who tried to steal her land and passed a decree to make her marry one of his noblemen and died aged 53 still in possession of her rights . A true feminist.
