So we can carry on speaking our truth innit 😂

2 people I work with regularly say "if that makes sense?" after a perfectly normal comment that only an idiot would think didn't make sense, really annoying!

Ah, yeah, that one drives me nuts.

"So, I'll drop the keys at yours before niner so I can get to work by nine-thirty, if that makes sense."

"Er, what if it doesn't makes sense?"

"What I mean is..."

"No, i know what you mean. It made perfect sense up until you said 'if that makes sense,'"

Oh - while I'm here, 'watching on'.

"And Princess Eugenie in the Royal Box there, watching on as the players take their places."

What's 'on' doing?

SuburbanSprawl · 22/07/2025 10:58

'Cringe'.

I don't like it used as an exclamation.

"So get yourself a pizza because we're having a romantic night out."

"....Cringe!"

And I hate it even more when used as an adjective.

"OMG That is so cringe!"

And because of those, I've even turned against it when used conventionally, as in the title of this thread.

Zov · 22/07/2025 11:07

I don't think I've noticed this one yet... When something is important to a particular thing, people say 'it's key.' A sense of humour is 'key.' Remembering to put fuel is your car for a long journey is 'key.' Just say 'important' FFS!

Someone ‘unaliving’ themselves. It’s a sad subject but such a weird change of terminology.

Some social media platforms block posts containing the word "suicide".

CeliaCanth · 22/07/2025 22:44

“Tearing up” as in welling up, eyes filling with tears etc. I tend to read it like “tearing up a piece of paper” and then realise the context.

CherryRipe1 · 22/07/2025 23:55

Smashed it, smashed it out of the court, living your best life, are you living the dream? They've probably been mentioned already.

BitSilly · 23/07/2025 08:43

Shits and giggles is awful.

It may be more of an Irish thing, but when someone dies, I see a lot of people writing sympathy messages using the phrase, "May he/she get the best bed in heaven". I know it's well meant, but I find myself rolling my eyes as I picture the inhabitants of heaven fighting over the best bed. And what constitutes the best bed anyway - satin sheets? Egyptian cotton sheets? A four poster bed? Is the previous owner of the "best bed" turfed out to make way for the newcomer? Do they wash the bedding between occupants? So many questions.....

Suburbanqueen · 23/07/2025 09:44

'Holding space' !!!!

Shits and giggles is awful.

You win the prize! That phrase is absolutely horrible & makes me cringe. Giggles, ok, stupid, but I get it, however why shits?

BitSilly · 23/07/2025 11:49

@CherryRipe1 I don’t get it either. What exactly is it meant to convey?
It really is horrible.

If it's MN it must be 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton

madameimadam · 23/07/2025 12:48

I know it’s mean as it’s used when people are justifiably sad, but I cannot bear any reference to ‘going to the rainbow bridge’ when a beloved pet dies. I find it unbearably twee (and I know I’m being mean as it may give someone comfort but I can’t bear it. So there)

I also loathe ‘a pop of colour’ used in many women’s magazine articles. ‘The red accessories add a pop of colour.’
Oh do fuck off…

I looked it up & it looks like it could be from 'for kicks and giggles' but some witty wag had the oh-so-funny idea of changing it to shits.
@madameimadam Yes, 'pop of colour' is another gem. Also 'accent wall & statement piece'. I'm sure there are more.

Purplebunnie · 23/07/2025 13:18

You're being a Mama bear - loathe and detest

I hate this too, it's ridiculous.

I know, but it’s everywhere now.

ayepecking · 24/07/2025 15:45

Someone posting and adding "(lighthearted)". I mean....why?

Or people on threads "following". Don't they know about the various options available on Mumsnet rather than filling a thread up with nothing.

Because of the humourless and the people that wilfully misread the obvious tone. I mean, I just ignore all those people, but I can see why people would do it.

Luluissleeping · 18/07/2025 16:11

Alot, abit, aswell among others. They are TWO words, not one. Very common (and grating) on this site.

Absolutely agree.

Also
Amirite/amiright
is downright ridiculous.

Cook off and fry off. Piss off.

CherryRipe1 · 27/07/2025 18:20

Badda bing, badda boom. Gives me the raving hump.

xsquared · 27/07/2025 19:45

Picky bits or picky tea can fuck right off!

CalzoneOnLegs · 27/07/2025 19:47

‘Movers and Shakers’
’Bang for your Buck’

I hate them so much 🤬
