Phrases that make you cringe - Part 2

So we can carry on speaking our truth innit 😂

Reading the “destructions” (instead of instructions because it’s soooooooo hilarious)

A bit MIL specific but …”as John/uncle bob/sue that works in coop/etc would say”. Mine uses this phrase 50 times a day and I can’t take it anymore. half the time it doesn’t make any sense.

”there’s a lot to unpack here” (in terms of a situation not a suitcase). I just want to scream that this isn’t Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and you are definitely not Andy Cohen.

“Man up”

Yeh, I agree. Unfortunately a lot of posters on here mean well, but I cringe when they get out all the tired 'therapy speak ' and it's so obvious. It comes across impersonal and generic:

"My son Billy died 10yrs ago and I'm wondering how to mark the anniversary"

Poster: would you like to talk about Billy ?

"First off I'm a man, I'd just like some advice on..."

Poster: this is meant to be a "safe space" for women.

"My daughter has turned 13 and she's showing some real attitude"

Poster: you need to have a chat with your GP.
You need to self refer to (insert a list of useless patronising charities and organisations that only exist to be a tick box and can't offer anything useful whatsoever) oh and don't forget the posted links that make the poster feel good but will never be clicked on.

It all comes across as very sterile and patronising.

🤢Just horrible.

I can't think of a single situation in which it would be appropriate to share that information. Nobody wants to know!

Weescottishwummin2 · 19/07/2025 11:25

What’s for eats ? That was so fun !!

BitSilly · 19/07/2025 11:38

Do one

OP posts:
Wintersgirl · 19/07/2025 11:42

There's a woman at my work who uses the word "demolish" instead of eaten, for example, "my daughter demolished her dinner last night" no she didn't! She ate her dinner, it's so bloody irritating...

Whataretalkingabout · 19/07/2025 12:08

This is the greatest thread ever... I was going to say about
" CringeExpressions1" .
Now we are already on page 5 of CringeExpressions2!!

I am a very lazy artist and this has inspired me to do a huge series, if I ever get around to it....
Thanks everyone!! I think I will call it Cringeexpressionism !?

IglesiasPiggl · 19/07/2025 12:10

EssentialDecluttering · 19/07/2025 09:13

I agree about "source please" especially when it's a chat thread and someone has posted something that is widely held to be true such as that eating vegetables is good for you.

Posters wailing about other people's lack of critical thinking.

It's so odd isn't it? Someone makes a comment on a thread and some fool says something like "can you link to the data on that". Well no, love, this is a chat forum where people express their opinions and give advice based on their personal experiences. It's not an academic research forum.

Whataretalkingabout · 19/07/2025 12:12

I will start my series with : Artist here.... or I Identify as an Artist...

A bit like people who have kids who are "avid readers" who "devour books". Oh get over yourself, your child just likes reading.

Yeah agreed, do one what? Rush to the loo? Stupid.

Going to see a man about a dog
Means mind your own business.
With you on go smacked.

But why is it so secret? I can only conclude that it's a poo.

Dogaredabomb · 19/07/2025 12:41

lamauvaiseherbe · 19/07/2025 10:25

@IglesiasPiggl - this is insolent

It just makes me wish I had a percolater and stop listening.

SO MANY CHARITIES ARE NOT REAL I helped someone with going to a food bank, gave them a lift there and back. Honestly the food was shite, not cohesive meals and what's the point of giving someone on the bones of their arse lasagne sheets? Food banks (etc) exist to give dwp an out and allow people to be performative.

Alot, abit, aswell among others. They are TWO words, not one. Very common (and grating) on this site.

As is "rediculous" (also frequently seen on Twitter/X).

"I feel seen."

"'No' is a complete sentence."

Use of "partner" when the OP has only been seeing a man for a few weeks. Also use of "partner" to describe a young teenager's boyfriend.

Dogaredabomb · 19/07/2025 12:51

Which brings me to a saying that I do like 'there's nowt so cold as charity'.

It's not secret, just mind your business as the person doesn't want to share/would take too long to explain.

Usually used to get away from a persistent natterer or busybody, who'd otherwise start asking yet more questions.

Could be dog, cat, car or whatever.

Or,
OP: DH won't spend on house stuff and expects me to contribute to the mortgage.
Posters:How long have you been married?
OP, We're not, just used DH to make it easier to understand.

lamauvaiseherbe · 19/07/2025 13:10

@Treesandsheepeverywhere - my Grandad used to say, ‘gone to the shore for
a loaf’ whether he was exiting the house or ‘explaining’ my Gran’s absence.

Unfortunately I think these schemes are often about the giver not the receiver.

LadySuzanne · 19/07/2025 13:30

Using "pieces" for items of clothing. Even M & S is using "pieces".

I’ve just laughed afresh when i saw your user name.
I remember the thread where a poster’s autocorrect changed Iggle to Iglesias.
And someone said ‘don’t be so formal! Iggle is absolutely fine’.

😂😂😂

DirtyBird · 19/07/2025 14:18

Adulting (I loathe this one)
it is what it is
hack (instead of idea or tip)

EssentialDecluttering · 19/07/2025 14:37

Failure to launch with young adults not leaving home. I know it's a thing, and a movie title but it is a total cringe.
