For me, AI has revolutionised dieting. Are others using it?

Every week I ask Chat GPT to produce a meal plan that is three meals a day, high protein, under 1500 calories a day, includes one glass of wine each weekend evening and sources lunch from Itsu or Pret in my “work from office” days as I’ve told it that’s all I have access to.

I ask for the dinner recipes to be drawn from websites of favourite chefs I name.

it provides me a daily meal plan with calorie and protein totals, links to recipes from my chefs, and when I prompt it I get a shopping list from my chosen supermarket.

on weeks I am financially stretched I ask it to adjust for that. On weeks I am bored of an ingredient (usually chicken) I ask it to adjust for that. It excludes things I ask it to like bread or coriander.

if one night I have two glasses of wine rather than the one it planned for I ask it to adjust the rest of the week to compensate so my weekly calories and proteins remain on target.

it is so easy. I’ve lost 6kg in 4 months as a result.

Are others using AI this way? Any other tips for refining instructions that you would recommend?

Wow!
Good for you!
Thanks for the tip!

readingismycardio · 09/07/2025 07:55

I also do this! And it gives me ideas for my toddler too!

Blunderbussviking · 09/07/2025 07:56

Good for you but it’s nothing new. I think everybody figured it out by now.
People keep asking Chat GPT about all kind of stuff all the time.

Wow -I am impressed - I disagree that everyone has been doing this forever 😂
I use Chat GPT for simple stuff only, so can you give an example of what prompt you have used to get this result?

I think the way some people think (myself included), the limitless possibilities of Chat GPT can actually limit the creativity on ways people think to use it if that makes sense. So many uses, you can't possibly think of every possible one. I use it for loads of stuff others never think of, and vice versa. The OP never said she was a genius or unique for using it this way (although GPT probably told her she was Grin), she was just sharing an idea.

Yes, I have.

I need to lose weight but a few weeks ago I was really struggling with sugar addiction and ridiculous overeating. I wanted a break from food completely to reset me (and lose weight) so asked Chat GPT to design me a nutritionally complete shake only diet I could follow for up to 12 weeks.

It created 6 shakes (3 a day, mix and match) adjusted for my requirements (no oat milk, only semi skimmed etc) and also suggested the supplements I'd need to support (omega 3 and multivitamin). It provided me a complete macro breakdown.

I have a thread in weightloss with the recipes and my results and it was bloody brilliant. I followed it for three weeks and lost 1stone 3lbs in that time and didn't suffer with hunger at all...the shakes were very high protein and 1300-1400 calories a day. I've only just reintroduced food and I feel great, it was just the start and the reset I needed 🙂

I think the problem is more that even if Chat Gpt spits out the perfect diet plan for someone, most people probably won’t stick to it because of lack of self control. OP is doing great, she is losing weight so she ‘s alright. But most overweight people I know have a lack of self control, or aren’t disciplined enough to stop eating when full, or can’t resist a whole packet of hobnobs or whatever. And Chat GPT won’t be able to give you those psychological tools.

Backtothebestbits · 09/07/2025 08:12

How clever! I wouldn’t have thought of using it for that.

WorcsEdu · 09/07/2025 08:12

Genius. Thanks, OP!

Iamthemoom · 09/07/2025 08:13

This is a great idea! Thanks OP! I would never have thought to use it this way. I’m on Mounjaro so losing weight through eating less but I have weeks where I struggle to hit protein and calorie goals because my lower interest in eating means I have less enthusiasm to plan and cook. This would be really useful in place of my usual motivation! Great tip. Thank you!

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/07/2025 08:14

Fascinating. I have no idea how you do that but it sounds brilliant.

Actually this is one less thing for an obese person to think about. Means they can spend more time working on not hating themselves and ignoring twatish comments about being lazy and having no self control, which is more likely to drive them to the hobnobs.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 09/07/2025 08:15

How does chatgpt know what you have in your cupboards, or the weather or what supermarkets you can pop into?

It still sounds like a bigger headache than it's worth.

PIayer456 · 09/07/2025 08:17

I eat a keto diet with intermittent fasting and ChatGPT is brilliant. I scan food labels and ask it if it’s keto-friendly. It does my meal plans, tracking etc. I give it a photo of what’s in my fridge and it gives me suggestions on what to have for dinner in-line with my macro targets (so will tell me I’m low in protein for the day but high in carbs and will suggest meals accordingly).

Typical nasty response on Mumsnet. I hadn’t thought to do this and I use AI for lots of things.

Only slightly overweight but realised recently that i suffer from food addiction. Had talk with ChatGBT about some of my symptoms about a month ago - it suggested I stop eating wheat products and cut back sugar and gave meal plan suggestions. I've stuck with suggestions and it's fitted with my lifestyle and hasn't been hard at all. And I've lost half a stone! So it has been very useful for me - am impressed! Not sure how psychologically it's worked - but it has. The whole point for me is not fast weight loss but a sustainable lifestyle change and diet improvement.

You tell it. It’s an easier way to meal plan and think of recipes without trawling the internet for ideas. It’s quicker and easier and can be tweaked on the fly. I’ll definitely be doing it.

I’ve done this for when I did veganuary or if I’m really struggling with functioning (I have adhd). I’ve also used it to make me lifestyle plans for my health issues and supplement plans. I know enough about health and nutrition to be able to tell if they’re following the right principles and they usually are. It’s super helpful to me even if others are very anti AI a lot of the time.

letstrythis · 09/07/2025 08:24

I’m using co-pilot for the same, although with much less detail than you. Mainly calorie counting and adjusting volumes of ingredients on my plate.
The results are mixed so I’m wondering whether I should use chatgpt instead. Anyone tried both?

Strong disagree.

Why come on a weight loss thread and tell people not to bother because you can reel off a bunch of negative stereotypes about fat people's defective personalities?

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 09/07/2025 08:27

I am still new to the wonders and possibilities of AI. My weightloss app uses it to find what's in my photos + assign a calorie count, but (to me anyway) this is next level and I'll be giving it a try. Thank you OP!
