For me, AI has revolutionised dieting. Are others using it?

Every week I ask Chat GPT to produce a meal plan that is three meals a day, high protein, under 1500 calories a day, includes one glass of wine each weekend evening and sources lunch from Itsu or Pret in my “work from office” days as I’ve told it that’s all I have access to.

I ask for the dinner recipes to be drawn from websites of favourite chefs I name.

it provides me a daily meal plan with calorie and protein totals, links to recipes from my chefs, and when I prompt it I get a shopping list from my chosen supermarket.

on weeks I am financially stretched I ask it to adjust for that. On weeks I am bored of an ingredient (usually chicken) I ask it to adjust for that. It excludes things I ask it to like bread or coriander.

if one night I have two glasses of wine rather than the one it planned for I ask it to adjust the rest of the week to compensate so my weekly calories and proteins remain on target.

it is so easy. I’ve lost 6kg in 4 months as a result.

Are others using AI this way? Any other tips for refining instructions that you would recommend?

You tell it. 'i'm shopping at Tesco'. It remembers things you have previously told it so you only need to do that once. Then each week when op asks for her meal plans she can write she has x y z already in, the weather is warm this week etc.

Yours is a she!! My chat GPT is a male so o can at least have one useful male in my house full of men!!

I doubt this is actually calculating properly. Chat gpt isn’t good at analysis or accuracy. It’s just predictive text.

Yes I’ve been using it to help with an anti acid diet to help my reflux

Please do not follow AI generated recipes as they can actually be dangerous. They are often inaccurate and people have been hospitalized after following incorrect cooking times on meat for example.

I’m worried that people on this thread seem to think chat gpt is like the talking computer on Star Trek and are ignorant of how it actually works. Chat gpt is simply predictive text. The directions you give it are not followed like html rules. It spits out a reply that merely relates to what you said. And it often hallucinates.

Yes, I have.

I need to lose weight but a few weeks ago I was really struggling with sugar addiction and ridiculous overeating. I wanted a break from food completely to reset me (and lose weight) so asked Chat GPT to design me a nutritionally complete shake only diet I could follow for up to 12 weeks.

It created 6 shakes (3 a day, mix and match) adjusted for my requirements (no oat milk, only semi skimmed etc) and also suggested the supplements I'd need to support (omega 3 and multivitamin). It provided me a complete macro breakdown.

I have a thread in weightloss with the recipes and my results and it was bloody brilliant. I followed it for three weeks and lost 1stone 3lbs in that time and didn't suffer with hunger at all...the shakes were very high protein and 1300-1400 calories a day. I've only just reintroduced food and I feel great, it was just the start and the reset I needed 🙂

Can you link the thread please

purpleygrey · 10/07/2025 05:57

another tip is when your cupboards are getting bare,
list the food you have and it will recommend a meal you can make from it.

Genuinely, how do you weigh up the heavy use of AI against the environmental impact?

Edited

Well, each ChatGPT search is more environmentally intensive than a google search by a power of 2/3 but nobody suggests people shouldn't use the internet because of the environmental impact. The environmental impact of AI is in the development stage and that is something we have no control over. Demand for AI isn't driven by people using ChatGPT to do meal plans or identify plants in their gardens. It's here, it exists and the genie isn't going back in the bottle. If you disapprove of using AI search tools you really should disapprove of using the internet as it's also environmentally impactful, just less so.

I do know how it works thanks to my DH who is a prompt engineer and uses it to design extremely complex code and machinery - it is far more than just predictive text, it analyses deeply. The models are evolving at an astonishing rate. If you don't use it for this or at all that's fine but those of us who do are doing great so no need to worry about us thanks :)

I am glad some people found my OP helpful even if others found it so irritating to be told of something they’d heard about before that it felt worth commenting about that!

I don’t use it to generate AI recipes. I prompt it to make meal plans based on links to recipes from my favourite recipe websites and it does that having analysed the protein and calories content of those recipes. I then prompt it to create the shopping list from Tesco products as that is where I shop. It’s not so good at finding the best club card deals and helping use those deals to decide which recipes to suggest. I’m not sure if that’s because I don’t prompt it well or it’s not capable. On the whole I find AI is less good than it should be at finding good deals. I’ve used to search for which sites offer my favourite perfume at the lowest price per ml and things like that and I can always find better deals than it finds. I feel quite suspicious about why a tool that so good at many things is less good at helping people save!

Thanks for this @LockHatter ☺️

Ive used Chat GBT for a few things… even to the extent of asking what recipes I could use with some buckwheat flour… so absolutely no idea why I haven’t taken it further with meal planning.

Im also trying to eat 30 different veg a week, so it could help me with that too.

I think it does have a bit of built in bias to please which affects results. I uploaded 2 photos of me and asked it to analyse changes in body composition (fat and muscle). Depending on what order I uploaded them in it gave me completely opposite results. According to it I always looked better in the 2nd photo!

Totally agree AI has really changed the game when it comes to dieting and meal planning. I’ve been using it to generate balanced weekly meal plans and even grocery lists based on what’s already in my fridge!
Interestingly, I found a few wholesale Canadian food suppliers offering healthy bulk ingredients at better prices pairing that with AI-generated recipes has made eating well a lot more affordable too.
Curious to hear what apps or tools others are using!

Mega Wholesaler Inc - The Best Wholesaler In Canada

Mega Wholesaler Inc deals with the wholesale of Socks, Bed sheets, Gloves, Garments, and Safety coveralls in bulk in the USA, and Europe.

AI is amazing for this. I love it. Beats the 80s when we had to use little calorie counting books which were so time consuming.

GoodLaudanum · 10/07/2025 07:49

I've just tried it and it created me a bespoke 7 day menu that is low carb, low fibre (I have UC) and high nutrient with a fasting day every other day.

So quick and easy - thanks OP!

No I meant op when I said she, as in op can input specifics like the weather each week. My chatgpt is an it I'm afraid 😂

That's ridiculous. I'd encourage anyone following any recipe to check their meat is cooked. Ovens etc are all different. That is not an AI problem

Sunbeam18 · 10/07/2025 07:59

Thanks, this is brilliant

How does chatgpt know what you have in your cupboards, or the weather or what supermarkets you can pop into?

It still sounds like a bigger headache than it's worth.

It knows because you tell them, obviously.

franke · 10/07/2025 08:04

I always forget about ChatGPT, I don't know why. Anyway it's just given me a meal plan which takes into account my specific health needs and allows me to continue having a mug of tea with milk and sugar three times a day 😊. It's pretty similar to what I already eat, which is good. I've asked it to be very specific about how much of each ingredient I should eat and clearly my portion sizes are way off, so this is really helpful.

Blunderbussviking · 09/07/2025 07:56

Good for you but it’s nothing new. I think everybody figured it out by now.
People keep asking Chat GPT about all kind of stuff all the time.

Was there really any need to be so condescending? Really? 🤦‍♀️

Great idea OP…unlike Einstein here ⬆️ I hadn’t thought of this, I will give it a try! 👌🏻

GameOfJones · 10/07/2025 08:15

I've found it really helpful for this sort of thing. When I was told I had high cholesterol I asked it to tell me which sort of foods I should be including in my diet and whether any supplements would be useful. It gave me good advice and when I cross checked with the British Heart Foundation website ChatGPT was pretty much spot on.

I've also asked it to create four, weekly meal plans with meals that take less than 20 minutes of prep time and are adjusted for our family's dietary requirements. I then asked it to generate the four shopping lists so I have one for each week. Then I've put them into my Asda account so if I don't have time to think about it I've got a month's worth of shopping lists and I can just click and order one.

Blunderbussviking · 09/07/2025 08:10

I think the problem is more that even if Chat Gpt spits out the perfect diet plan for someone, most people probably won’t stick to it because of lack of self control. OP is doing great, she is losing weight so she ‘s alright. But most overweight people I know have a lack of self control, or aren’t disciplined enough to stop eating when full, or can’t resist a whole packet of hobnobs or whatever. And Chat GPT won’t be able to give you those psychological tools.

I am obese. I haven't eaten a biscuit for months. Yesterday I sat in a meeting with chocolate bars, biscuits and cakes and ate 4 cherries. I don't eat at all after dinner or before lunch.

For lunch I had a vegan soup mix with about 6 cubes of feta cheese and an apple. For a mid afternoon snack I had a handful of nuts. For dinner I had a large bowl of salad with tuna, and a small bowl of greek yoghurt with half a banana chopped in.

I have lipedema and put on 10kg in menopause.

I find it depressing that people look at me inhabiting my body and think I am eating a whole packet of hobnobs in one sitting.

justsaxy · 10/07/2025 08:19

@Blunderbussvikingdfod with your lazy stereotypes and uninformed, outdated views.
