What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

StonePaperScissors · 06/07/2025 09:02

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

💐

Thanks. But I've said nothing requiring sympathy, it's not my birthday, and I'm not dead. I merely made a rather obvious comment about how people use their physical appearance to signal their membership of groups. Perhaps the flowers were meant for another poster.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 06/07/2025 15:27

I only know one person with colourful hair. She's had it that way since she left a school that was very strict on policing everyone's appearances. Having moved from a notoriously artsy/different kind of area to an extremely conservative one midway through her school years, I just assumed that it was a bit of rebellion against the conservative stances of our school and village! Long may it continue, as long as she is happy.

Although it's been many different colours (to the point where I have asked mutual friends, "What colour is X's hair this week?"), my favourite shade was when it was baby pink. It really suited her!

For me, though, it always sounds like it would require too much maintenance. As I rarely go to see hairdressers in general, the idea of having to go and be fussed over every few weeks would not be my cup of tea.

You're welcome sweetie. We all deserve some love ❤️

I like it, don't really think anything specific about the hair - it would depend on the clothes as well.

I grew up friends with a lot of alternative/goth/hippy/metaller types, and many of them still have coloured hair in middle age. Mostly educated professionals, some counter-culture. So to me it suggests a music and lifestyle preference... but only if the clothes match as well. One of my best mates currently has pink hair, but she also has lots of tattoos and wears Lucy and Yak dungarees, so it's very much a tribal thing. She's not super left wing, doesn't believe TWAW, in fact she's probably a bit more 'conservative with a small c' than me, and has a very visible, professional job.

Young person with blue/green hair - probably more likely very woke, because that's the fashion.

I am in my 50s have coloured my hair since the 80s and still do I am as the quote well described as an old "alternative/goth/hippy/metaller type" I had no idea coloured hair was linked to ND or trans etc - as stated above quite a few friends from those days who are in very good jobs and not ND or trans either still dabble in the colours - interesting views on the thread and an education

I would assume that you are a lesbian and/or neurodiverse.
This is obviously hugely judgmental and stereotyping, but it would be my starting point.
I work in a sixth form college and the only kids with colourful hair are ND.

I’m glad you said it first as I think the same.

Mrsredlipstick · 06/07/2025 15:36

I wonder if my DH will think he's 'bonking' a Gonk if I dye my hair pink?

if that’s your hair, it’s MAGNIFICENT! Especially the first photo. I am very jealous.

It is all me and thank you very much. I get many compliments mainly from when I’m out and about minding my own business and out the blue I will get I love your hair. It happens more than you’d think. I forgot my hair isn’t normal colours most the time so I’m always a little surprised.

mumofsixfluffs · 06/07/2025 16:02

For those that think coloured hair means you’ve bleached the life from it, that is untrue. I’ve been doing mine for 4 years now and it’s fine. I get it redone about every ten weeks by an amazing lady. And yes, the colours fade but if you look after it they fade to a beautiful pastel colour so still looks amazing. Below I’ve got a before and after side by side picture and the before picture imho still looks amazing before the prism colour was applied

I used to have bright blue hair and got nothing but compliments 99.999% of the time.

im back to boring old brown now as i felt too old for brightly coloured hair (30) but if i saw someone with brightly coloured hair id probably stop and say how much I liked it.

edit: interesting about the autism thing. I got diagnosed with autism after I’d coloured my hair back to brown. Most autistic people I know just have natural hair. I also have no major political opinions and am not part of the LGBT crowd.

Edited

You’re never too old. Do what makes you happy, we’re only here once! Ignore the tiny minded people, their opinion doesn’t matter at all. One day we’ll all be dust or in the ground, look however the hell you want 💙

This is amazing especially the rainbow one

I think people associate it with extreme political ideology, that’s why they are wary.

Really? Interesting. I’d be more likely to make assumptions about music taste!

TheCountessofLocksley · 06/07/2025 16:09

I love it….and I’m always envious. I have dark brown/black hair with red undertones. It barely lifts with bleach. Best I can ever get is a tidier red/copper how.

I’d love to have pink or purple hair. Or that beautiful oil slick hair. But it’s not be!

FKAT · 06/07/2025 14:53

Haven't read the full thread but whenever I see coloured hair it's usually on middle aged women who consider themselves slightly alternative. They will be Green or Lib Dems, have at least one gender fluid child, own at least one item of homeware that refers to gin or 'live laugh love', work part time in the public sector and have been on at least one pro-Hamas march. They will insist on taking public transport everywhere - to the detriment of everyone who knows them - and yet see no problem buying toxic hair dye from global pharmaceutical giants.

Good lord. Your stereotypes don’t fit anyone I know with brightly coloured hair!

Ooh mermaid hair!!

Mightymooo · 06/07/2025 16:13

This thread 😂 I'm sure if you think about it we can all find something to judge everyone for. Following the trends? Boring and lacking personality. Wearing a suit? Stuffy and square. Tracksuit? Chav. Brightly coloured hair? Trying to hard or trans.

tinydynamine · 06/07/2025 16:16

Dame Edna Everage, Mary Whitehouse, and Mrs Slocombe spring instantly to mind.

Doyathinkhesaurus · 06/07/2025 16:18

I’m a massive TERF and I have pink hair 😁 When people put on their judgey pants and screw up their noses they are telling you more about them than about your hair.
I’m def in the I don’t care club….

I don’t care what you think of my hair.

popcornpower2025 · 06/07/2025 12:33

This sums up a lot of the views on here nicely though. It represents a preoccupation with how people perceive you and a desperate attempt to be different and interesting, while at the same time making your whole personality about how you look. I'll gladly change my opinion when I meet someone with brightly coloured hair who doesn't give off these vibes

BASIC!!!!!

I had rainbow coloured hair 10, 15yrs years ago and also pink dip dye. I did the half blue and half red like that film character.

Loved it!

Sadly moved away from the amazing guy who coloured it (he won awards) so now I'm grey and dull and almost 54.

Oohh I’ve never thought of it this way. Do NT people ever dye their hair crazy colours? I actually can’t think of any who do. Other than when I’ve done it and it’s a symptom of a mental health breakdown, I always thought it was for fun but yeah, maybe we ND people find things fun that most people just think why or what’s the point or something.

(Assuming you’re NT) would you not dye your hair different colours and if not, why not?

genuinely curious now!

If you’re anywhere near south London/Surrey I can highly recommend my hairdresser

I think they're terrified about standing out from the crowd. Fitting in is extremely important to NTs.

Plus, they're less likely to get the simple joy from colour that we do. Too busy judging others.
