What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

In healthcare, it's considered akin to a warning like how the most poisonous animals in nature are brightly coloured as a warning to others

Eh?

It’s really not, are you ok?

caramac04 · 06/07/2025 14:26

I’m old, straight, NT, fairly Liberal views, GC and I’ve had loads of different hair colours. Tbf I’ve often been accused (really in this day and age???wtf?) of being lesbian.
Some people are so judgmental although I’ve had lots of compliments on my hair esp from young people I worked with.

Cantabulous · 06/07/2025 14:29

I think the person probably has MH issues of some sort and/or is a bit lonely so is waving a flag to attract like-minded people to be friends. I’ve never thought it was a political thing.

I didn't realise that these brightly coloured parrots are dangerous

Who knew this would be such a good litmus test of potential friends!

Do you judge peoples political views, mental health status and sexuality solely by the colour of their hair?
yes?
push off then, we clearly have zero in common!😆

Some of these comments are hilarious. I’ve never assumed people with brightly coloured hair are making a political statement 😂 I know lots of people in their 40s and 50s with dyed hair and none of them are particularly political. Most of them were grungey in the 90s and just carried on. I see no problem with wanting to look different and experiment with hair colour and clothes. Why would you want to look like everyone else? Trust me, the bright coloured people are judging you right back, vanilla brigade 🤪

The hair colour itself is not a political statement. It's just an aesthetic choice that's particularly popular with certain groups. Birds of a feather flick together and all that! As for not wanting to look like everyone else... That's exactly what most of them are doing - trying to fit into a particular tribe/demographic.

Wow. That's insane.

My brother (who is on the Andrew Tate train and a cunt) thinks alpha men (😂) should avoid women with funny coloured hair, tattoos, single mothers, etc. I dont give a shit about his or other small minded people's opinions.

To be fair, this is probably the best reason I can think of for dying your hair green.

If it scares off the Taters then at least it's performing a useful purpose.

I associate it with people who are very keen on being their 'authentic selves', 'expressing themselves' and who say things like 'if you don't like who I am, that's a you problem'. Which would be all well and good, if it wasn't typically coupled with a preoccupation with what other people think of them. Overthinking, analysing others behaviour, and in the absence of fawning validation, imagining they're the centre of negative attention so they can accuse people of a having a 'you problem'.

Wow, you ascertain all that from someone's hair colour, I suspect it might be you who is is overthinking and all the rest of it.

Jinglejanglenamechanged25 · 06/07/2025 14:51

Wow I have the overwhelming urge to add some bright hair dye to my Tesco order!

FKAT · 06/07/2025 14:53

Haven't read the full thread but whenever I see coloured hair it's usually on middle aged women who consider themselves slightly alternative. They will be Green or Lib Dems, have at least one gender fluid child, own at least one item of homeware that refers to gin or 'live laugh love', work part time in the public sector and have been on at least one pro-Hamas march. They will insist on taking public transport everywhere - to the detriment of everyone who knows them - and yet see no problem buying toxic hair dye from global pharmaceutical giants.

One of the funniest threads ever.

I'm tempted too to have a pink hair do tomorrow @Jinglejanglenamechanged25

NoKnickerElastic · 06/07/2025 14:56

I've never met anyone with blue hair that hasn't had mental health issues TBH!

LlynTegid · 06/07/2025 14:56

My opinion is that it's a bit Marmite- some people it looks great on, others it is awful.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/07/2025 14:56

I’m green with envy. I would love have really bright coloured hair. But I do t want to have to bleach it first.

There you go judging others and assuming everyone thinks the same as you - they don't. When you mature, travel, meet lots of different people, you'll realise that small mindedness holds you back. People aren't a collection of stereotypes soley attributed because of how they look. Free your mind and relax, you might make some friends. 💗

And when you mature a bit more, travel if you're privileged, get life experience in other less glamorous and desirable ways if you're not, meet countless people and live through several decades of fashion and trend, you will start to recognise patterns of behaviour. You will come to understand that while yes, we are all individuals, human beings still have a tendancy to adopt physical presentations that reflect those of the groups they belong to, or aspire to belong to. That's observation not stereotyping.

FKAT · 06/07/2025 15:02

That said, I once went to a party with Daphne Guinness and she had silver hair at the time and it looked AMAZING. I think you can get away with non-natural hair if you have fashion model looks and Guinness heiress hairdresser budgets and the time to get your roots done every other day. Same with Jane Goldman / bright red hair. For the rest of us, non-natural hair looks cheap and has political connotations.

FYI People do judge by appearances, it's what they do. It's necessary for survival and navigating social situations.

I'm the same as you, my hair is really dark so I would need to bleach it and that put me off. I've always said when I go grey I'll dye my hair a nice lilac or pale pink. I don't know if it's easy to cover greys with semi permanent colour though.

cloudyblueglass · 06/07/2025 15:07

I think they have far more patience than I do. I can’t be bothered with a box standard due let alone egat ig takes to achieve the vibrant rainbow colours others have

MorningLarkEchoes · 06/07/2025 15:08

Like other posters on here I associate it with people who hold extreme left-wing political views and trans activists that think TWAW so I don’t really engage with them unless I really have to.

I wonder why they did it. It just confuses me. I just leave my hair how it is. It gets shampoo and conditioner and that's it. My dd cuts my hair when it needs it. It seems to me to be a waste of money to do any more. I used to get it cut in the high street until the prices rocketed.

Forwitty - not saying that autism is bad, but as a teacher it’s simply a fact that the children with coloured hair are more likely to be autistic, and they are also more likely to be into identity politics. Sadly they are also more likely to have other issues and be less happy.

I agree. In this year's intake of 75 (university) we had 3 with blue hair and one with green, all ND. On the first day one took me aside to list her diagnoses, triggers and behaviours that would ensue if she was unsettled in any way. She's actually doing great; the others, not so much. There are other ND students in the group but they don't hold the same political views on trans rights or advertise their beliefs via hair colour.
I also know an older woman who survived breast cancer, thought fuck it, and went bright pink. Not for me but her choice and It's made her happy.

simsbustinoutmimi · 06/07/2025 15:23

I used to have bright blue hair and got nothing but compliments 99.999% of the time.

im back to boring old brown now as i felt too old for brightly coloured hair (30) but if i saw someone with brightly coloured hair id probably stop and say how much I liked it.

edit: interesting about the autism thing. I got diagnosed with autism after I’d coloured my hair back to brown. Most autistic people I know just have natural hair. I also have no major political opinions and am not part of the LGBT crowd.

I think neurodivergent

and the old ladies in the seventies with blue/ purple / pink rinses ???

Apparently the purple rinses are often a consequence of cataracts and aging meaning people naturally can develop a bit of a yellow tinge to their vision - so they're convinced it needs to that purple to be white in their vision - according to my hairdresser who is amazing with colour stuff.

My hair is usually purple base dyed with pink semi-perm over the top - so the degree of vibrancy of it varies depending on how recently I've been to the hairdresser. It would be brighter but I've developed an allergy to bleach so can't bleach it down easily to get real vivids over the top anymore. It's well-done by my hairdresser so not a horrendous DIY job and it brings me joy which is all that matters to me.

My natural hair colour is an absolute shite mouse and with the bleach allergy I'm limited in options and it's just become something that I get done because it gives me a lift.

Incidentally I also have the underneath clipped in - you can't tell cos I don't tend to tie my hair up, and the only reason for that is because I get bloody horrid heat rashes and eczema at the back of my neck and clipping that bit of hair down sorts out that problem.

I'm about as politically boring as they come, yes I'm autistic but in a "getting on with shite and I might just occasionally socially blunder a bit so tell me to shut up if I do" manner - it's just nicer feeling I've got a pretty colour on my hair, and it actually tends to benefit me at work when I work with clients with learning disabilities - they remember the hair if not my name, and it's a great "talking" point - the non verbal chap who was just signing by pointing at his hair, pointing at me and giving a thumbs up and grin was probably the best communication he'd had in a while!
