What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

I think people associate it with extreme political ideology, that’s why they are wary.

This.

I would assume that you are a lesbian and/or neurodiverse.
This is obviously hugely judgmental and stereotyping, but it would be my starting point.
I work in a sixth form college and the only kids with colourful hair are ND.

I love it. I've only done red/purple (and it's now been black the last 6 years) but I'd love to do blue or pink.

Haven't done it yet cause I'd imagine it's quite hard to keep it looking good and probably requires more effort than my hair now. Also I'm finishing my degree next year and will then hopefully be a paralegal/trainee solicitor, so I'm unsure how well that job would work with colourful hair. I think I'd wait until I find a job and then dye it, rather than the other way around, in case it effected how I'm viewed in interviews.

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 06/07/2025 09:12

I don't really think anything of it. It's quite a popular look around my area, sometimes I see certain styles that are really nice, but I suppose other than that I wouldn't give it a second look

thefamous5 · 06/07/2025 09:12

I used to. I have had dipped dye pink hair in the past

But now, sadly, I do associate it with extreme political ideology that i don't agree with it so I steer well away.

WeekendFreedom · 06/07/2025 09:12

I personally don’t like the bright colours, when you look about the town it’s usually people that have reached middle age and decide they need to be fun or people that are just no hopers.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 06/07/2025 09:13

I don't care what people do but whenever I see someone with bright hair I think "I bet he/she thinks transwomen are women" and write them off for that.

Eldermileniummam · 06/07/2025 09:14

I don't like it. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't want my daughter to do it. I think it rarely looks good.

I don't care enough about what other people do though.

Daffodilsarefading · 06/07/2025 09:16

I don’t really think anything. Unless it’s done badly then I think they really need to get their roots done. Having said that I think that about all badly done hair dyes. I hate to see bleached hair with black roots for example.

Snorlaxo · 06/07/2025 09:16

Unless we are talking about a child, I assume that people with colourful hair have extremist views on gender because it’s a look popular with supporters of that community.

Alltheoldpaintings · 06/07/2025 09:16

I associate wacky hair with trans rights extremists, and generally people with very woke views, so I would probably assume that we wouldn’t get on.

I’d be polite but honestly a bit wary.

Obviously rationally I know that other groups of people may have bright hair, but how you choose to present yourself is going to affect the assumptions people make about you.

KateMiskin · 06/07/2025 09:16

Its not to my taste but I wouldn't think anything of you.
Most people don't think about you that much.

McCartneyOnTheHeath · 06/07/2025 09:17

I assume they are attention seekers. I know someone who has pink hair and a blue fringe - just why?!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 06/07/2025 09:19

I they they look cheap/chavvy.

Binfire · 06/07/2025 09:21

I love the look when it’s just been coloured but am not so keen when it’s faded or patchy. Bright colours over grey can be very cool.

I’d assume the person has ‘lots of personality’ and is potentially neurodivergent but that wouldn’t put me off necessarily. I’ve got friends with colourful hair and people I avoid with colourful hair and vice versa!

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 06/07/2025 09:22

I do not associate it with anything political. I am in my 50s and I mostly associate bright colours in hair with people my age or a bit older doing the whole, "I'm crazy, me! " thing.

JMSA · 06/07/2025 09:23

I think of it as an alternative teenage girl thing, not a grown woman thing.

Isn’t brightly coloured hair viewed by the NHS as a red flag for mental illness? I could be completely wrong but I’m sure I read that somewhere!

meditated · 06/07/2025 09:23

It’s quite popular look here too and not necessarily with the uni students/ neurodiverse/ binary etc but with women that have 4+ children, neck tattoos and a bull breed dog.

For me it just looks a bit too chemical. A bit like Botox and fillers. I’m all for embracing your natural look.
Express your colourful personality with fun wardrobe?

RedRec · 06/07/2025 09:23

I live near a well known 'alternative' town. Every other person there has pink or green, etc, hair because they think they are different from the rest of us 'normies'. When in fact they are a homogenous mass.

Easipeelerie · 06/07/2025 09:24

When I see people with brightly dyed hair, I assume they’re autistic. In the school I work in, the only children with brightly dyed hair have ASD diagnoses. I like it if it suits the skin tone but often the kids who chose it are quite pale and it clashes a bit rather then brightening them up.

Radionowhere · 06/07/2025 09:25

I love it if it's done well. More often than not it isn't and looks horrible.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 06/07/2025 09:25

I think like other posters, unnatural hair colours are so prevalent in groups with certain political views id assume that you were “wearing the uniform” to signal your beliefs.

This is obviously hugely judgmental and stereotyping, but it would be my starting point.
I work in a sixth form college and the only kids with colourful hair are ND.

My mum had all hair colours growing up and as a result lots of other mums never really wanted to chat to her at the playground in those times (‘naice area’ and my mum and dad were probably seen as a bit different in those times, mixed ethnicity couple, younger, less affluent so lots of factors sadly).
I’ve had loads of hair colours, always had a positive response. I am ND though so this makes me laugh 😂 wouldn’t ever judge coloured hair absolutely love it and often compliment people if I see it, but I work with cyp and can echo that it’s usually our ND/trans/gay and lesbian yp that have dyed hair actually, only just noticed that now I’m reflecting on it!

Colourful hair on young people (teens/ twenties): probably in the queer/ neurodiverse community and making sure everyone knows about it. Much the same as the goth/ grunge/ emo looks of the past, but more political.

Colourful hair on older people (thirties and up): as above, but with an extra layer of ‘look, I’m not a boring mum/ middle-aged person like the rest of you and I’ll make sure you know it!’ Possibly making a big social media announcement that they’re bi after twenty years of marriage and posting lots about Pride.

I know the above are stereotypes, but they are often true, in my experience.

All age groups: Have the time, money, and energy to keep the hair dye fresh and avoid roots showing. I envy this.
