What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

Hmm...I was on the fence about dying my hair teal or keeping a more natural colour, but this thread has made up my mind - if it keeps some of the sneering people on this thread at bay, then that's a very significant benefit.

I had colourful hair for a while in my late twenties but it was a case of wanting to do it for years and getting it out of my system before being grown up. I’m straight, neurotypical and hold no extreme views and am a bit bemused by the assertion that anyone who has had coloured hair meets these characteristics.

I dyed my hair pink during lockdown. I get lots of positive comments.. One of my customers says that when he sees my hair it cheers him up. The other week in the supermarket an elderly man hollered very loudly across the aisle "Ere Love, everyone should have hair your colour!!"
My Mum is less keen. I've had to scrub the shower out with Cif before and scrub the landing carpet after I transported dye on my foot onto the landing carpet!!

🤦‍♀️ take 100 people with blue hair. Take 100 people with natural hair. Ask each group their politicians beliefs/leanings. Which group do you think would have the highest percentage of transactivists/extreme leftist type folk?

I know it might be difficult twisting yourself like a pretzel to try and deny the answer, but we all know the answer...

Alternatively, weird, right-wing loons might agree.

I don't judge people on the choices they make in a salon and I don't extrapolate those choices into a whole persona.

Lets get back into the real world of grown ups.........judging - whether it is other people or situations is completely natural, it's how humans keep themselves safe. Everyone does it - yes, even you my dear....you are judging others right now with your post.

We are on a thread where someone has asked for honest opinions on a particular topic and it is being discussed.

Everyone makes snap judgements but real grown ups learn to question their own prejudices.

I’m going either cerise pink or teal blue for the summer, can’t decide

If you’re anywhere near south London/Surrey I can highly recommend my hairdresser

I’m in south London and would be very interested to know where you get your hair done. Having seen your second lot of photos, I’m seriously considering getting mine done - it looks SO good.

I love colour so wear bright colourful clothes all the time. Most of them me-made because I’m crafty like that. I’m also very competent at colouring and usually have varying shades of purple on my hair that I’ve done myself, bleach plus direct dye. I’m always getting complimented for looking bright & cheerful. 😊

My house is painted a pretty shade of pink on the outside and I have a magenta pink glass splash back above my kitchen units and houseplants everywhere.

I’m in my late 50’s, retired early, left wing leaning and do not support the bollocks that you can change sex, you can’t! 🤷🏻‍♀️. Never attended a Pride march in my life but I do support the LGB Alliance.

You sound like an amazing person, @PluckyChancer! I wish you lived near me,

FKAT · 06/07/2025 17:31

I think they're terrified about standing out from the crowd. Fitting in is extremely important to NTs.

Plus, they're less likely to get the simple joy from colour that we do. Too busy judging others.

If only I was as non-judgmental.

TBH, I don't dye my hair bright colours for the same reason that I don't get botox or fillers or tattoos or Turkey teeth. The cost / benefit ratio doesn't seem worth it.

Well I’m one of the judgy people but I’ve accidentally drunk too much rose while listening to brritpop hits in a personal 90s oasis isnspired and im now thinking I might sue the under layers of my hair light pink for the summer (like rose coloured, I mean rose the wine not the flower but I don’t know how to do the little line above the e). Never blue though.

Skirridfawr · 06/07/2025 17:53

Do people really see brightly coloured hair and start projecting extremely detailed negative traits onto a stranger? I live in an area where right-wing politics are popular but brightly coloured hair is also popular, all ages too.

lljkk · 06/07/2025 11:14

Same as I think of anyone who dyes their hair (any colour, including those dying gray hair): I wouldn't do it for myself because too much faff & maintenance. You have something I don't. Some variety colour jobs are amazingly nice to look at which I can admire... but so much maintenance.

if very unusual... means Attention seeking (no harm in that) and creative personality, maybe? How many women glam selves up just for the attention. So showing off their long legs, beautiful clothes, striking shoes, amazing nails... it's all similar decisions. Same as anyone (male or female) who puts a lot of effort into having a striking or "superior" appearance really. Not for me but obviously very popular behaviour that is generally harmless.

Exactly, some people enjoy fake tan and fillers and surgery. I like piercings and bright hair. Though when I was younger I'd always do my entire head of hair, now I only have a section pink and the rest black lol. I have always been emo though so it was never a phase 😂

curliegirlie · 06/07/2025 11:26

Oh God, the amount of judgement on this thread is unreal! I’ve spent the best part of 25 years off and on dying my hair various reddy/purply colours. This pink was my favourite- had it done in Germany back in 2007 and never have been able to achieve the same since 😢

This pinks so pretty! Have you tried mixing a pink like with maybe some purple or red to try and get this tone?

I would assume that you are a lesbian and/or neurodiverse.
This is obviously hugely judgmental and stereotyping, but it would be my starting point.
I work in a sixth form college and the only kids with colourful hair are ND.

I would assume you think you are neurodiverse and never miss an opportunity to tell people about this.

I am 54 with (usually) white hair. Ibsubscribe to no extremist political ideology. I make a lot of my own clothes because I am good at it (and I am tall and oddly proportioned). I love colour and wear a lot of it. I will dye my hair, probably violet, during the summer holidays because it will make me happy. In every other aspect of my life I am quiet and unassuming. I just love colour.

Absolutely love this. I’m 52 and am the same with my views too. I love colour. I love wearing colour. I’ve had pale pink hair before. My dd has had blue and pink this year. She looked fab. She’s a very shy nd girl so definitely wasn’t trying to advertise herself. We just love colour. Nothing too deep involved. We have done it for ourselves ❤️

I’m green with envy. I would love have really bright coloured hair. But I do t want to have to bleach it first.

What colours your hair? You can do a 'bleach bath' (YouTube it for exact instructions) where it's like bleach mixed with conditioner to be less damaging

Strobbery · 06/07/2025 18:10

This thread is an eye-opener. I don't think I've ever come across so many judgemental people on one thread!
My particular favourites are the ones saying they'd avoid people with colourful hair because they'd assume (without asking or otherwise engaging) that such people believe TWAW. Utterly bonkers.

I had genuinely been thinking of adding some pinks and peaches and purples to my now grey hair and reckon I'll definitely do it now if it acts as a judgemental tosser deterrent.
And I'm as TERF as they come.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/07/2025 18:13

I'm over 50, neurotypical, straight and have brightly coloured hair. Why? Because I like it like that.
I do it for me, and me alone. Couldn't care less what other people think. If they want to make assumptions that's up to them.

UK2HK · 06/07/2025 18:18

I'm not willing to risk being sacked. The parents of the children that I teach and even if those that I don't teach are very sheltered and conservative and love complaining.
They would moan if you wear makeup, go bare - faced, aren't Caucasian, speak with a strong accent etc.

NewTribe · 06/07/2025 18:20

I think coloured hair is only part of a persons look. You can look full on whacky hippie or you can look really smart and stylish, it depends what else you are wearing. I see plenty of very stylish women with coloured hair. I’ve had all sorts of colours. I tend to have mostly brown with some brightly coloured streaks. It’s doesn’t look that whacky as it’s only streaks and I tend to have my base colour as my natural colour.I get mine done in a salon often by level three apprentices so it’s inexpensive but well done. I don’t do it all the time as I like my hair to stay really healthy and shiny.
