What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

Lets get back into the real world of grown ups.........judging - whether it is other people or situations is completely natural, it's how humans keep themselves safe. Everyone does it - yes, even you my dear....you are judging others right now with your post.

We are on a thread where someone has asked for honest opinions on a particular topic and it is being discussed.

I’m surprised that so many people claim that they were unaware that brightly coloured hair is very popular with people who are ND or have extreme views on gender.

It’s like men with shaved heads. Nobody thinks that every man with a shaved head is a skinhead but it’s a reputation that some believe in.

I'm a primary school supply teacher, and quite often have bright coloured highlights put into my hair (I'm not quite brave enough to do a whole head). Most recently I've had hot pink and the kids love it. It's a conversation starter and (I think) shows I'm a bit different to the average older lady I meet also doing supply. I'm also younger than a lot of supply teachers, so that, plus the "fun" hair, makes me stand out and be a bit memorable.
I'm planning to get it done again in the next couple of weeks, as I'm about to start a 6-week holiday club job, and it's just a bit of fun. I don't think anything of anyone else I see with colourful hair.
As I say to my mum, "life's short, why not have pink hair?"

I think pink hair is exactly one of the the 'average older lady' phenotypes.

I am very jealous of people with colourful hair, @StonePaperScissors! I once saw a woman whose hair was dyed in a variety of blues and greens - it looked amazing.

I have always assumed that, as I have dark hair, I couldn’t have my hair dyed like this, so I am jealous and admiring of those who can.

Flomingho · 06/07/2025 12:46

I like it when I see other people with colourful hair. Don't worry about other peoples opinions. Do what makes you happy. A colleague of mine had pink hair a couple of years ago and it looked great she only stopped it because it was high maintenance and she had to go to the hairdressers every other week.

I don't care what people do but whenever I see someone with bright hair I think "I bet he/she thinks transwomen are women" and write them off for that.

Yup, I feel the same.

I quite like the color blue and I think it looks cool, but if I see someone with it I am immediately wary of them possibly calling me a bigot and trying to make my (professional) life hell because I don't share their views.

I keep my distance, until I am sure they are not going to scream "TERF" at me and will try to enlist others in a harassment campaign. This means I will probably keep my distance forever.

This is honestly so wild to me. My 15 year old was talking about how kids her age judge other people to be gay or whatever based on their hair colour or style. We were rolling our eyes together and laughing at how childish that was. And here are a bunch of presumably grown women doing the same. Maybe they're the parents of the nasty little shits in my kid's school?

True that.

tillylula · 06/07/2025 12:46

This is sad. I have a pink section in my hair at the back and im FAR from woke 😅

I’m genuinely staggered by the prejudice on this thread, I can’t believe how judgemental you can all be about hair colour. I’ve got boring non colourful hair, but whenever I meet someone with colourful hair I’m predisposed to like them. They’ve decided to be different and do their own thing and I think that’s just brilliant.

OldMcDonaldHadABigMac · 06/07/2025 12:48

I'd assume their pronouns were they/them. Or ze/zir/whatever the nonsense is.

I associate it with people who are very keen on being their 'authentic selves', 'expressing themselves' and who say things like 'if you don't like who I am, that's a you problem'. Which would be all well and good, if it wasn't typically coupled with a preoccupation with what other people think of them. Overthinking, analysing others behaviour, and in the absence of fawning validation, imagining they're the centre of negative attention so they can accuse people of a having a 'you problem'.

Nailed it

But it isn't doing their own thing/being different if it's the ND/trans activist uniform.

I love it. I've only done red/purple (and it's now been black the last 6 years) but I'd love to do blue or pink.

Haven't done it yet cause I'd imagine it's quite hard to keep it looking good and probably requires more effort than my hair now. Also I'm finishing my degree next year and will then hopefully be a paralegal/trainee solicitor, so I'm unsure how well that job would work with colourful hair. I think I'd wait until I find a job and then dye it, rather than the other way around, in case it effected how I'm viewed in interviews.

I did mine blue once. I found it hard to wear my clothes though as they all looked wrong with the blue (even plain jeans and t shirts, for some reason). Then the blue washed into a green tone which was awful!
Pink is great but fades super fast. It didn’t have the same effect on my wardrobe, I found pink, red, and hennaed hair very easy to wear.

AlannaOfTrebond · 06/07/2025 12:49

Wow, I am honestly amazed by the majority of these responses.

I don't really notice, it just looks normal to me. The same with tattoos and piercings - someone would have to have quite an extreme amount for me to register.

I certainly wouldn't associate it with any political ideology, if anything I'd probably link it to being fans of a certain style of music.

Some men, quite a lot of men actually and from some very young ages, have male pattern baldness and sadly, quite to their own dismay, have to shave their head !

I would assume that you are a lesbian and/or neurodiverse.
This is obviously hugely judgmental and stereotyping, but it would be my starting point.
I work in a sixth form college and the only kids with colourful hair are ND.

lol, my dd has colourful hair and so do a lot of her friends, yes they are all ND 😆

It's just another hair colour though - brightly coloured hair is so common on people of all age groups, it's totally unremarkable.

PeapodBurgundy · 06/07/2025 12:50

This thread has been an eye opener for me. I had no idea that brightly coloured hair is associated with neurodiversity, poor mental health or political ideologies by anyone, let alone so many people.

As for the attention seeking aspect, I didn't realise that would be such a bone of contention either. I've always just thought of it as an extension of the clothes we choose to wear, or the home decor we choose etc.

I have to say I've never thought anything much about people with brightly coloured hair other than to think 'that's a nice colour' or 'I don't like that colour' in the same way I might do about somebody's shoes, outfit, bag etc. I don't read anything further into it than that. It's interesting that others do, and It's going to make me wonder now.

Delphiniumandlupins · 06/07/2025 12:52

I have/have had several friends and family members with brightly coloured hair. None of them are ND or lesbian and at least one is quite right-wing politically. Mostly they're friendly and less judgemental than your average MN-er.
