What do you think of people with colourful hair? As in different colour hair - pinks, greens, blues, purples, - big bright colourful hair

I always had my hair in a natural brown until last year and I started getting it bleached and highlighted to get some fun bright colours in my hair. I don't want to be known so I won't give my hair colours away but I did a new colour recently and I love it.

I get two reactions.

  1. where people love it
  2. they hate it but mabe they won't say it but their tone and attitude - I sense something.

For me I think there is too much madness in the world and I am not hurting anyone and I need more bright and cheerful in my life.

Some people probably think I am a clown or something. I don't know. I really love colourful hair.

Lets get back into the real world of grown ups.........judging - whether it is other people or situations is completely natural, it's how humans keep themselves safe. Everyone does it - yes, even you my dear....you are judging others right now with your post.

We are on a thread where someone has asked for honest opinions on a particular topic and it is being discussed.

Exhausting.

PersephoneSeethes · 06/07/2025 12:25

I’ve been thinking about all the comments. I’m ND, my family is ND and I’m not offended in any way by the comment. They are on point. Is this just human version of Aposematism?

It definitely depends on how dark/bright the colour is. If there is multiple colours etc Helen Mirren looked great. The bathroom efforts of my DS’s GF look, well, that Americanism ‘nasty’ comes to mind.

Do you have a nose ring, specifically a septum piercing? The combo of bright hair, with a large septum piercing would be given a wide birth. I can’t wait for that fad to die out.

Judging, yes. But we put out to the world what we want people to read about us in our attire, that is not new.

Smokesandeats · 06/07/2025 12:26

Why is having blue or pink hair any different to dying it black or blonde? Personally, I like to see a bit of colour!

Why not just ‘I want blue hair or a tattoo’ ? There isn’t always a nefarious agenda.

Having low self esteem isn’t nefarious.

5128gap · 06/07/2025 12:28

I associate it with people who are very keen on being their 'authentic selves', 'expressing themselves' and who say things like 'if you don't like who I am, that's a you problem'. Which would be all well and good, if it wasn't typically coupled with a preoccupation with what other people think of them. Overthinking, analysing others behaviour, and in the absence of fawning validation, imagining they're the centre of negative attention so they can accuse people of a having a 'you problem'.

Hanovercrosse · 06/07/2025 12:28

The upkeep is no different to if you dyed it a natural colour

The two people closest to me with these colours are a conservative Pentecostal Christian and a conservative Hindu. So I don’t associate it with ‘extreme’ political views.

I do associate unironic use of the word ‘woke’ with racist arseholes, however. It’s a massive red flag.

I would say conservative Pentecostal is quite extreme tbh

PuppyMonkey · 06/07/2025 12:30

I remember a student came to my old workplace (local newspaper) on placement for a week. She had the bright pink hair thing going on. She got asked to go home as the boss said she might well be going out to an inquest or something and the boss thought that would not go down very well with the coroner or the family.

taxguru · 06/07/2025 12:30

Sorry, but I regard that kind of thing as attention seeking or self obsession, so it would change my first/instinctive opinion of the person.

I'm the same with people who have "extravagant" sense of dress, or paint their house strange colours, or have an "out there" kind of car, etc.

I far prefer the "natural" look, but then I'm an introvert and live an introverted lifestyle where I do everything possible not to get noticed and stand out.

Bowies · 06/07/2025 12:30

It’s just hair colour, I see it as more of a fashion thing. People cut dye and style their hair to change their look and because they can.

I wouldn’t be assuming anything about anyone’s sexuality, political views, neurodiversity or mental health. Bonkers.

KellySeveride · 06/07/2025 12:30

Honestly- I think it is used as a way to cover up the fact they are extremely self conscious about themselves. It’s like look at my bright hair so you don’t have to look at anything else.

I generally don’t think it looks good on anyone.

UK2HK · 06/07/2025 12:32

Ironically, it's parents that keep anyone who works with me from drying their hair silly colours as I work in a Hong Kong learning centre and the Mainland Chinese parents are EXTREMELY conservative so I only dye it naturally black.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 06/07/2025 12:32

It's a great way to filter out people likely to be problem employees when interviewing.

I associate red/blue/green/purple hair with people who think the world revolves around them and will start trying to drag their sexual, identity, dietary or political opinions into the workplace.

I take on apprentices so I put a lot of money into training them including paying for qualifications.
I don't invest in rainbow hair people.

This is hilarious. What the actual hell is wrong with people on here. The daily mail readers are out in force on this post. I had bright coloured hair cos I was well into punk rock. It’s about going against the norm and not being the same as people like you!

This sums up a lot of the views on here nicely though. It represents a preoccupation with how people perceive you and a desperate attempt to be different and interesting, while at the same time making your whole personality about how you look. I'll gladly change my opinion when I meet someone with brightly coloured hair who doesn't give off these vibes

It used to be cool and innocent backnin the 99s and early 2000s but been hijacked by some right odd balls who are now the majority and I am just wary of their mental state and extreme views.
Also some people don't look after it and it can look pretty tacky and nake the person look very messy and liie they so not care about their apperance. It is like someone not washing hair or showering.

KateMiskin · 06/07/2025 09:16

Its not to my taste but I wouldn't think anything of you.
Most people don't think about you that much.

Yeah this. If I saw someone with brightly dyed hair I’d think ‘oh, they like bright hair’, and possibly ‘they don’t feel bound by convention’. That’s it. I certainly wouldn’t be making assumptions about their politics 🙄

Topsyturvy78 · 06/07/2025 12:39

It's not my thing but if that's what you like it's non of my business. I do know of men that have turned up for date's and been put off by their hair colour.

Dontcallmescarface · 06/07/2025 11:49

I have flame red hair and I love it. I'm not a lesbian, don't have extreme political views and don't believe people can change sex. Judge away I give no fucks.

Me too. although mine is purple lol

JustSawJohnny · 06/07/2025 12:40

Honestly, I think it's their business and anyone bothered by it is a bit of a conservative twat.

Most commonly seen on older women where I live - seems like sheep following the herd.
