If it wasn’t the law would you wear a seat belt

Now I think the obvious answer to this is yes! However someone asked it a a party last night, and quite a few people so no or not on short journeys, maybe only in the front seat (type answers).

Really surprised me

Yes.

I couldn’t not.

Morgenrot25 · 05/07/2025 18:20

Wasn't a MENSA members party then @despairofbadscience? 😉

tinyspiny · 05/07/2025 18:20

Yes because I’m not a complete imbecile , which is what I’d consider anyone who doesn’t wear one is .

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 05/07/2025 18:20

I have a friend who works with road safety. We took a van for a 10 minute trip and he didn't wear the seat belt. As they say in MN, the mind boggles.
(But then he has casual sex without a condom, so...)

Jumpthewaves · 05/07/2025 18:21

Yes of course.

mynameiscalypso · 05/07/2025 18:21

It’s just so automatic for me to put it on that I wouldn’t even think twice. Plus, you know, I’d rather not die.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 05/07/2025 18:21

Yes.

My mum hates wearing them and I often have to tell her to fucking put it on. I don’t get it, at all.

JohnsShirt · 05/07/2025 18:21

Of course.

NotAntisocialJustSelectivelySocial · 05/07/2025 18:21

Yes.

I’d assume anyone at the party that said no was just too drunk for rational thinking, or just an idiot!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 05/07/2025 18:21

They have probably forgotten ( or are to young to have experienced) how many people died or suffered catastrophic head injuries before the seat belt legislation. Yes, even in short journeys. ( woman in our street when I was a child was sent through the windscreen when her car was hit by a van as they backed out of the drive).

ScratCat · 05/07/2025 18:22

Yes. I was in a car accident and the police said my seatbelt saved my life. The speeding man that hit me wasn’t wearing his and he died.

Hercisback1 · 05/07/2025 18:22

Honestly, short journeys at low speed, no. Anything with 40mph plus roads yes.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2025 18:23

Yes, but I also often go places in the world where they are broken, absent or frankly shoddy. And I don’t worry then.

Ohthatsabitshit · 05/07/2025 18:23

I think this would be more interesting if we knew how old the posters were. If you were alive when seatbelts were not mandatory are you less likely to worry about it?

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 05/07/2025 18:24

Yes for all journeys. Most accidents are on short journeys and even low speeds are still fast enough and carry a lot of momentum.

Ilovemyshed · 05/07/2025 18:24

Yes

PoopingAllTheWay · 05/07/2025 18:24

Yes i would

AcquadiP · 05/07/2025 18:25

Yes, ofcourse.

Comedycook · 05/07/2025 18:25

Yes definitely. I would feel so vulnerable if I wasn't wearing one. I was once in a terrible car crash and I believe the seatbelt saved my life....I was covered in bruises right where the seatbelt was on my body so I definitely went into it with a huge amount of force which is quite scary.

I had a twattish boyfriend when I was in my teens who got stopped by the police for not wearing his belt...idiot.

Startthecar · 05/07/2025 18:26

Ah....yes...

Flupflup · 05/07/2025 18:28

Yes always . Ex AE nurse ,say no more.

ShesTheAlbatross · 05/07/2025 18:28

Yes.

But I was really surprised to read something the other day that it’s only just become law (as of this month) for everyone to wear a seat belt in Virginia. Up until a few days ago it was only people sitting in the front.

I wonder if its been compulsory for so long people forget why. The public safety ads with the kid being projected into the driver, killing them, is etched in my mind. Someone not wearing a belt in the back is literally saying they don't care if they kill the front passengers.

sakura06 · 05/07/2025 18:28

Of course. 😳

SunShow · 05/07/2025 18:29

Yes, I've never known a time when I didn't wear a seat belt, my parents always wore them in the 1970s and as children we had car seats long before it was the norm.
