Now I think the obvious answer to this is yes! However someone asked it a a party last night, and quite a few people so no or not on short journeys, maybe only in the front seat (type answers).

Really surprised me

Yes.

My auntie went through a windscreen in a crash - I would never not wear a seatbelt now.

I also wear a bike helmet and I don't have to. Why wouldn't I want to be sad

People who don't wear helmets....do you think they are just a little bit thick? I can't fathom another reason for it. I've seen SO MANY bike accidents, i'd wear one going down the street.

I mean, yeah. I guess. But people do things every day that endanger others. I don’t think this is a massive deal.

Not a massive deal? Jesus..🤦🏼‍♀️

JackJarvisEsq · 05/07/2025 19:17

Always and I refuse to drive if anyone is in my car without it on.

I’ve insulted many an African taxi driver by lifting belts out from being tucked under the seats but I don’t care

Fifthtimelucky · 05/07/2025 19:17

I knew someone who was involved in a car accident.

No one was drinking. No one was driving over 30mph. There were five people in the car she was in. She was in the middle back seat and not wearing a seatbelt because there wasn’t one in that position (this was over 30 years ago). She was thrown out of the car and was killed. The other four were wearing seatbelts and got away with bruises.

i will never not wear a seatbelt.

This is a joke, right?

Unfortunately, probably not...I despair at people 80% of the time.

I'm so sorry. That's horrible.

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 05/07/2025 19:18

1000%

I have been in a head on collision before they had seatbelts in the back seats. So would you if you saw what happens.

Using your face as a brake once your thrown from the windscreen might also make you pray for death I imagine.

Pricelessadvice · 05/07/2025 19:20

If people had seen the utter horror that is a person going through a windscreen, they’d wear a seatbelt.

I would never not wear one.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 05/07/2025 19:22

Yes. I worked on a neurosurgery ward before seatbelts were compulsory. The effects of crashing through a windscreen are horrendous.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 05/07/2025 19:22

Yes.

I have lost a family member in a road accident. I would never be so arrogant as to assume I wouldn't need one...

Thunderdcc · 05/07/2025 19:23

Maybe not if I lived somewhere remote and tootled around at 20mph and never saw another car? Not sure.

The reality is that I might be tootling around but someone else could come flying round the corner and smash into me at 60mph. So the risk is the same wherever I am going really, there are far too many idiots on the road to not put it on

Pedallleur · 05/07/2025 19:25

Yes. What do you think happens if you crash or someone crashes into you?

Fizbosshoes · 05/07/2025 19:27

Yes!
My DH very very rarely sits in the back of a car but recently asked if he had to wear a seat belt in the back. I was amazed that was even a question. I don't ever remember sitting in a car without a seatbelt

spoonbillstretford · 05/07/2025 19:27

I would definitely wear one. I wouldn't drink a skinful of alcohol and drive either if that were legal. Because it would be rather stupid and dangerous.

Dontcallmescarface · 05/07/2025 19:27

Yes and I would insist that all passengers do. My username is linked to the consequences of not wearing one ( no rear seat belts in the car I was travelling in when I was a child).

ApolloandDaphne · 05/07/2025 19:28

Yes of course I would. I'm not an idiot.

Epli · 05/07/2025 19:33

Yes and I would not get into a car unless everyone was wearing one.

Pedallleur · 05/07/2025 19:34

Hercisback1 · 05/07/2025 18:22

Honestly, short journeys at low speed, no. Anything with 40mph plus roads yes.

You do know that you move at the same speed as the car? Good chance at low speed of your face hitting the steering wheel assuming no airbag if rear ended or going out of the car in a side impact

16wimb · 05/07/2025 19:43

Littletreefrog · 05/07/2025 18:58

Or you could just wear your seatbelt which is less hassle and more likely to save your life.

Yes, I am aware. Like I said it horrifies me that I used to do it. However, the comment you have responded to was just me saying how you get round the beep.

Blobbitymacblob · 05/07/2025 19:44

Yes.
I’m a product of brutal public safety advertising.

“This is Michael. Today he’s going to hit his girlfriend so hard she ends up with permanent brain damage”

I’m also terrified of climbing pylons, playing near open water and smoking in bed.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 05/07/2025 19:46

Absolutely, my sisters fiance was in an accident on our housing estate as they were t-boned at relatively low speed but the car was clipped in such a way to cause it to roll. The car rolled and he came out the side window and was crushed. He was a rear passenger.

He was only 16yo (and the reason him and my sister were engaged is a whole other story not for posting on this thread).

It's the same with bike helmets, I cannot fathom why people especially teens don't wear them. My kids always wear them and get bullied at school for doing so! Bonkers!

despairofbadscience · 05/07/2025 19:48

Good to hear most people wouldn’t do it. This wa was a 70th birthday party. People were laughing about “back in the day” sort of conversion and that’s how seat belts came up in conversation. So many of the group where between 50-70 and where just “meh” about seatbelts. It’s was more “I wouldn’t on short journeys” than out and out I wouldn’t at all.

Bridport · 05/07/2025 19:50

I was a driver before wearing seat belts was made compulsory and have always worn one.

Back then there were posters on billboards of a poor woman with a terribly scarred face and the caption underneath it was 'She didn't wear a seatbelt because she didn't want to crease her dress.' It has stayed with me.

CinnamonBuns67 · 05/07/2025 19:51

Yes. I wish to live in the event of a crash and my chances are much better if I wear a seat belt.
