Just venting. 16 year old cat. Normally very fussy and only eats his own food. NEVER bothers with our food. Hates spices, lemon, onion. Doesn't even eat chicken legs if you offer him.

This evening we had a couple of friends over. DP made chicken tagine, and left it on the counter before setting the table in the garden. The asshole cat has gone and sampled each piece of chicken. We had to throw away the whole thing and order dinner.

I mean I love him and have had him since he was a tiny kitten, but honestly I want to scream. How can you be such a bastard? DP thinks he is cute...

My aunt had a mad cat, he had the turkey off the counter on Christmas morning. Aunt was a midwife, she very calmly got her kit out and stitched it back together. Once cooked no one guessed a thing.

Ours likes sweet puddings, especially trifle! And marshmallows (hence my user name). She goes absolutely nuts for the mini marshmallows that go in hot chocolate, and I once found a packet hidden, that she’d stolen out of the cupboard and put behind the bed, covered in little cat teeth puncture holes.

As the person who had cats that ate bread, raisins, spaghetti and drank red wine, I can confirm that none of my cats have ever died of poisoning; they have died of old age and / or FIP.

I have been chastised before by people in the USA for having plants and flowers in the house and for letting my cats live a full life by going outdoors as and when they please, including a Persian cross (raisin eater), a ragdoll / birman cross (spaghetti eater and red wine drinker), and a Maine coon / ragdoll ( no special food fancies but would eat 6 high-quality food sachets for breakfast and would hold snack sticks like a human holding a stick of rock). All happy, healthy, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and insured, and living their best lives.

❤️❤️ If I was a cat I’d want to be your cat.

Our cat loves watermelon and will fight DH for it.

DH had a childhood cat who who to love sherry. His mother would give it a thimble of it's own after church (which it did not attend, incidentally) after which it would sleep for the rest of the afternoon.

We buy them all softs of toys and little houses too, but they turn their noses up and just want to sit in Amazon boxes

I call that 'My flatpack cat'.

Ddil still fumes (lightheartedly) about the cheese and pickle sandwich their greyhound stole. She had hyperemesis, and this sandwich was the first thing she had fancied eating in days, and the lanky git got up on the dining table and ate it. That baby just turned 3, and she is still salty about that sandwich.

I fondly remember the day when my daughter was about nine and eating a fish goujon. Her cat walked past, quick as a wink swiped the last goujon and ran off with it. Daughter chased the cat around the house, cornered her under the table, prised the goujon out of her mouth and ate it, in front of the cat, sitting under the table.

Both daughter and cat survived.

MadKittenWoman · 05/07/2025 14:18

I can confirm that none if my cats have ever died from poisoning. I tried to leave a very detailed post about all my cats but Mumsnet was having none of it.

A friend made a large quiche for her choral society buffet. I am sorry to say she cut around the area her cat had eaten and delivered the quiche ready sliced into portions!

I think I was more amazed at her reteilling the story than I was about her serving the quiche.

Showed your cat who was boss then! 😀

I used to have a cat called Pigeon who was mad about eggs. She'd get quite violent trying to steal any eggs I was eating. She even tried to steal my friend's Kinder Egg out of a bowl once but it just kept rolling over so she couldn't get it.

Back then I'd go to Lidl on the weekend and buy rolls for Saturday and Sunday. If I left them in the bag on the worktop, Pigeon would get the bag on the floor and take bites out of each roll. She was a weird little creature but a total character.

Frankenstein (one of my current cats) likes to steal anything I am eating. In the past I have caught him eating a piece of v spicy jerk meat that he'd stolen from a covered pan. He's also taken lettuce and broccoli from my plate and then eaten them out of sheer spite 😁

Ashwapanda · 05/07/2025 23:07

My DD has a friend who did this to a whole dominos pizza, one bite from every slice. My DH won't let him in our house now

Are you making a point that cat didn't deserve the sherry, then? 😸

PepsiForEva · 06/07/2025 07:38

Absolutely! The thought of the post-church sherry is the only thing that got me to church over the years.

Trust a cat to find a loop hole. 😡😆

Horses7 · 06/07/2025 08:04

Either keep all food covered or keep your cat on a lead/take to vet. You’re smarter than your cat - hopefully!!

MixedBananas · 06/07/2025 09:09

talomon · 03/07/2025 20:25

No way. Normally he is well behaved and doesn't go anywhere near our food. But it takes a special kind of assholery to take a bite of every single piece as if he wanted to ruin the party on purpose.

The Tagine was that good and I agree. Chicken Tagine is fire.

My uncles cat would eat all the pests in and around the house. Bugs of all sorts, mice and even small lizards.

MannyTeddy · 06/07/2025 11:00

Our black cat Minx stole the steak from my husband's plate once and he just looked dejected as my daughter ran after him. 😂

LavenderViolets · 06/07/2025 15:03

Many years ago we had a cat that would steal balloons and run off with them to play, he never burst them he was so gentle and funny.

Now we a parrot that bites into fruit in the fruit bowl when you’re not looking so has to be eaten and has to be in her cage when we eat otherwise will steal whatever we’re eating….. and dogs that we’ve learnt will eat anything if you take your eyes off it for a second including granola and Greek yoghurt. Plus inedible things like credit cards, wool, wood and poo bags if dropped or left anywhere for more than 2 seconds. The main culprit is a puppy still at 1 so hoping she grows out of it.
