He took a bite of every single piece of chicken!!

Just venting. 16 year old cat. Normally very fussy and only eats his own food. NEVER bothers with our food. Hates spices, lemon, onion. Doesn't even eat chicken legs if you offer him.

This evening we had a couple of friends over. DP made chicken tagine, and left it on the counter before setting the table in the garden. The asshole cat has gone and sampled each piece of chicken. We had to throw away the whole thing and order dinner.

I mean I love him and have had him since he was a tiny kitten, but honestly I want to scream. How can you be such a bastard? DP thinks he is cute...

Sorry if you already know this OP but just highlighting in case any other kitty owners don’t know - onions are toxic to cats anyway, along with garlic, chocolate, grapes/raisins and more. But they don’t seem to know this, one of my pampered cats has barely any wild instincts left and would mug me with claws for even just a lick of a cheese and onion crisp 🤦‍♀️

Sorry you lost your dinner OP! More than once I’ve threatened to call the authorities on my cats too (but they heard there are set meal times in jail so it doesn’t scare them)

Mine also tried to eat onion bhajis, he goes feral for them

Breadcat24 · 04/07/2025 09:51

@Wildhorsesdraggedme What a cat! I often think you could make a mint just selling pouches of jelly with no chunks

Iheartlibrarians · 04/07/2025 10:31

Another one-time owner of a food-crazed rescue cat here. I think the "highlights" were the time she stole a finished corn-on-the-cob and proceeded to try and eat the cob itself, and the time I offered her a chicken leg, thinking she'd enjoy getting the last of the meat off it, only to hear the deafening crunch of her eating the actual bones. Straight to the vet after that one!

Can't deny it was helpful if I ever dropped frozen peas when retrieving them from the freezer though...

I second the request for a pic, OP. Pay the cat tax!

I knew this would be about a cat before I opened the thread. Cats are absolute dickheads, god knows why we put up with their shit and still love them regardless.

BruisedNeckMeat · 04/07/2025 10:36

I wasn’t expecting a cat! 😂

Reminds me of my DSis who would quickly lick all the best biscuits on the plate (rationed biscuits in our house) when we were kids so I got the shit ones.

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 04/07/2025 10:40

When we first got our rescue lab, I innocently assumed the only food in danger would be ‘food a dog would like’. I was disabused of this notion when he climbed up to the bunker (it is a word and it’s a Scottish one), flipped over a very spicy cauliflower and chickpea salad cooling on a tray (yep, the Nigella one) and ate the lot. The aftermath of that was not pretty.

But his absolute best move was grabbing a half-defrosted litre of frozen milk, dragging it upstairs, biting it then shaking his head round and round so there was a perfect pattern of milk on every single one of the carpeted stairs. Took me a whole day to clean it properly. Arsehole. We did learn though.

GentleSheep · 04/07/2025 10:41

Sorry I am howling with laughter! Such a typical cat! Bless him! 😂😂😂

No way. Normally he is well behaved and doesn't go anywhere near our food. But it takes a special kind of assholery to take a bite of every single piece as if he wanted to ruin the party on purpose.

LOL

Sorry, its the fact that the cat chose That particular meal, at That particular time, to do something He has not done before.

ConstanceMartensCat · 03/07/2025 20:59

He was like, Ugh there’s nasty Moroccan spice on this bit. And this one. And…. Bless him.

😆😆

Cheeky monkey. I’d have laughed. I ❤️ cats xx

I bet he did 🤣

talomon · 04/07/2025 12:09

So just to give you all an update, DP washed the chicken pieces, took off all the parts that were touched by spices, cut the chicken into bite sized pieces (cat needs his food to be cut up otherwise he refuses to eat). And guess what, he did NOT touch it.

Now that I think of it, a lot of his antics (like refusing to eat food that is not cut up properly) started when my DP moved in some years ago. DP had never had cats and was not into pets in general. I told him when we met that I would choose my cats over any relationship so he has to make friends with the cats or else the relationship wouldn't progress.

DP ended up ingratiating himself wayyyyy too much though. He is a proper cat slave now and does a million things I wouldn't dream of doing. Recently the cat has started ordering his food to be delivered to the windowsill where he sits, and DP fucking does it!

Your cat clearly doesn't need his food cut up because it wasn't when he stole it. 😹
Love the way he has your DP trained.

Onions and garlic are poisonous to cats

Maybe it wasn’t the cat then. Could have rats? They do this

Thats hillarious! I read the title and thought "what an a-hole... unless it's a cat" and it was 😆
Bless his heart.
None of our cats ever stole food until the orange one arrived and food disapeared from plates...

Haha! Remembering a previous thread about a selfish husband at the table, I thought it was going to be another…bonus that it’s a cat!

My DH is exactly the same with the dog he didn't really want.

LancreWowhawk · 04/07/2025 14:04

Current DCat has yet to show the slightest interest in any human food. He's barely interested in his own, unless it's Dreamies. He goes feral for them. I reckon he's probably about 90% Dreamies by this point, but all our actual food seems safe. For now, at least!

However, previous DCat was a very different creature. If I was eating fish and chips, she used to slink across the back of the sofa and attempt to hook the fish over my shoulder. I once had to jettison my plate of Chinese takeaway when I momentarily left it unattended and found her picking out the prawns. And she went absolutely nuts for Cool Original Doritos, if anyone ever dropped one. She'd sit there purring wildly while she liked all the seasoning off.

givemushypeasachance · 04/07/2025 14:47

My friends cat eats tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes or the big ones, he hunts them down on the kitchen side and runs off with them. They get a Gousto delivery and if there's a tomato in the box, unattended, he'll climb in the box, hunt it down and go to town on it.
