What time do you think Rachel will hand in her notice tomorrow?

I think if it's not in already tonight then it will be before 10am tomorrow.

I'd like to actually know what people think she's done that's incompetentt? (I'm not interested in the VAT on school fees issue). The U turns on winter fuel payments and disability benefits weren't her - they were Starmer. Liz Kendall is widely criticised for her performance this week. But what has Rachel Reeves herself done?

And yes, I'm finding the lack of empathy for her incredible - no matter what your personal views on her or her party's politics are, the poor woman was visibly really distressed and I really can't see that the u turn this week was her fault. (And I'm saying this as someone who campaigns on benefits for my living).

If she has done nothing then surely that suggests she is incompetent?

Dwimmer · 03/07/2025 17:13

Being given a vote doesn't make you informed. It makes you a British citizen over the age of 18.

It also gives your opinions value to the politicians.

EasternStandard · 03/07/2025 17:17

Extravirginolive · 03/07/2025 17:09

She probably thinks she's in line to be the first Labour woman to be PM after Starmer.

The Deputy PM isn't a succession plan position, it's a union agreement position so Reeves would see herself as the natural successor along the lines of Blair and Brown.

Reeves every speech has majored on how she was going to solve all the problems. And now she's crying in the HoP.

She's the architect of her own demise.

Fascinating reading how unacceptable it is to criticise her here. Everyone else but not her.

Weird. I suppose Labour voters actually believed her speeches in the beginning.

Edited

Yes agree on this particularly posters criticising other politicians.

Extravirginolive · 03/07/2025 17:20

This "inherited" thing they keep saying is weird too. It's a complete misuse of a word. Why misuse a word so often as a central message?

And "black hole". And "fixing the foundations"

How is 20 billion of a trillion pound spend a "black hole"?

What are the foundations and how are they fixing them.

Does anyone know yet?

Was this bill a foundation? Is it fixed?

They have gathered up a collection of treasury spad ideas, added them up, increased tax and tell us this is better than anything on the last 14 years. So far, completely worse.

What excitement is there for the next 12 months or have they use up all the leftover and discarded spad ideas now?

Who knows. They aren't going to tell us are they.

It’s perfectly possible to have empathy for Rachel Reeves as a person who is struggling, and also be worried that we are all in her hands, and she might not be doing a very good job.

I am not interested in jeering at her, or enjoying her suffering. It’s horrible.

But I do care that the country’s finances are in worse shape after a year. When indicators were on an upward trend.

There's a picture, hug and make up so it's all over.

But Sir/Ma'am we still have a bit of an economic/funding crisis.

Yes some truly unpleasant people. Fancy taking pensioners heating money away.........

🥱

@EmpressoftheMundane said "I do care that the country’s finances are in worse shape after a year. When indicators were on an upward trend".

Exactly so Empress, Boring old Rishi had somehow scrabbled a team together that had started an improvement programme.
But Labour have acted as they usually do and wasted that advantage. There is no hint that Starmer & Co will make things more comfortable for most of the UK Citizens. Ideology trumps maths in Labour's; Theory and Practice of Economics.

Nigel Farage, who has never had a proper job in his life and claimed £2M expenses from the EU as an MEP, has said that she is out of her depth.

The Chancellor can’t have a better endorsement that she is doing OK than that.

Lots of people and financial experts have said the same from the beginning. That's why we have an army of civil servants who are wiser heads.

We made tough but fair decisions to rebuild the foundations of our country.

Now, we can look to the future.

Starmer is posting this on X.

What? Do we know what the decisions are? What the foundations are? He's moving on now to the future and I have no idea what they have done to the foundations?

Anyone?

When you talk about many who can work choose not to, maybe that’s so, but you are overlooking the fact that over 30% of those lawfully claiming benefits are working people with jobs, but receiving insufficient pay.

And when the government talks about PIP, they fail every single time to point out that it’s not an out of work benefit, but one designed to support he extra cost of disability. I’m still failing to see how cutting it gets more people back into work, unless removing support leaves people with no alternative to work regardless of whether they are fit enough or not.

She won't be around for long. Behind the scenes they are desperately trying to find someone to replace her. A weeping woman in such a vital and important position is a major embarrassment to them. It will be the usual.....wants to spend more time with her family etc etc.

I disagree. Within a month this will have largely been forgotten, except maybe for certain politicians.

The autumn budget and what the measures Rachel Reeves outlines will be the test of how long she remains in post.

Are they? Who told you that.

the bond markets balked at the idea of her leaving, so you might not have confidence, but the people in the know do 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ultimately, it won't be Starmer's decision though, will it. He's currently playing what he believes to be his best hand - keeping Reeves is to his advantage because he has a scapegoat. This week has highlighted just how precarious his position is. It's clear the party is in complete chaos and he's trying to figure out how best to try to navigate this.

We've been through this - it's not about confidence in Reeves. It's an acknowledgement that her incompetence has put the country's finances in such a precarious position that even the slightest hint of further trouble sends the markets into meltdown.

I think he knows his fate is tied to hers. It makes me think he’ll try to keep her but the rest of the party will destabilise with spending demands.

Time will tell, but I don’t think your “knowledge” is anything to be taken notice off! Much like OPs.

Wolmando · 04/07/2025 09:19

Wanting to keep someone doesn't always mean they are any good, it just means that any replacement would be particularly bad. Who would replace her, there is not a good choice at all
