What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

I don’t think anyone has said they are anti breastfeeding have they? Just that they find it weird to extend it beyond babyhood in a developed country

Why is it weird to breastfeed a baby whose main source of nutrition is milk (i.e. less than a year old)?

That a cure for Cancer has already been found.

Several people I know have this theory. But it's kept quiet so that they can keep raising millions and millions of pounds.

Honeypleasedont · 28/06/2025 21:27

Zov · 28/06/2025 21:04

That jars me too. I know quite a few women with 3-5 children who have anything from 2 to 4 surnames between the lot of them - and the mother herself has a different name again.

Surely that's solved by giving all the kids the mothers surname.

dynamiccactus · 28/06/2025 21:27

Dingalingalong · 28/06/2025 21:22

K so because you were useless at making breastmilk (your words) everyone else should stop breastfeeding early too, because it makes you feel weird? GTFO! 🤣 The world doesn't revolve around you and fragile ego.

I didn't say I felt weird at any point. Are you confusing me with another poster?

And given my son is now in his early 20s, I think how he was fed as a baby and for how long is completely irrelevant as is any effect on my ego.

Well, if a full-time SAHM (or SAHD) is not doing an actual job, how can you say that somebody caring for their children on their behalf whilst they are at work is any more doing a job?

If I was at home being paid for looking after other people's kids, I'd have to be registered, and pay tax and NI, and contributing to my pension When I was a SAHM, ( on maternity leave), I didn't have to do that because I was at home looking after my own kids. So not a job. Hard work at times yes, but not a job that I could be sacked from.

Waitingforthesunshine24 · 28/06/2025 21:28

Not controversial but influencers on social media, tbh anyone really, who puts up reels or lives of themselves crying. Might be irrational of me but I can’t stand it.

Yes. And especially when the 'baby' is walking and talking, and 2, 3, 4, 5 years old. Just no.

Only around 60% do. But ‘paying tax’ shouldn’t be linked to voting, or else lots of people wouldn’t have the vote eg disabled people unable to work.

Every pensioner pays tax - as does every adult of working age and indeed every child. Nobody is exempt.

It's just that the amount that a lot of people are required to pay, based on their income - particularly the very young and the very old - is zero.

Just like, until recently, owners of electric cars paid the full amount of VED that was due - it just so happened that the amount charged was nil.

When people suggest that pensioners who don't pay any tax shouldn't be allowed to vote, are they suggesting that millionaires and billionaires (the ones that don't avoid paying their fair taxes) should each have hundreds or thousands of votes?

TheAmusedQuail · 28/06/2025 21:29

I judge women who have had abortions. While supporting every woman's right to abortion. (Basically, unless it's a genuine contraceptive failure, or rape / assault etc.)

I don't feel the next one is controversial, BUT it's controversial on MN. I believe that sex is not binary and instead is a continuum. (I said what I said and I won't be drawn by the usual MN members to discuss this opinion.)

nahthatsnotforme · 28/06/2025 21:29

I would rather have Boris and Rishi than this shower of shit any day of the week.

FrangipaniBlue · 28/06/2025 21:29

People shouldn’t have children / more children knowing they need to rely on the welfare state to feed and clothe them.

People shouldn’t have more children than they can fairly and equally devote time and love to. More than 2 benefits nobody other than the parents.

Liesontoast · 28/06/2025 21:29

If you’re a trans man you shouldn’t want to or be able to get pregnant. They call it a seahorse pregnancy and I find it hard to comprehend why you’d want to do something that fundamentally is something only women can do.

IceColdFanta · 28/06/2025 21:29

JayJayj · 28/06/2025 21:26

There’s plenty of men of with kids to different women, you just wouldn’t know as they don’t look after them! So I do hope you are judging them as much.

(FYI woman with 1 child so this isn’t being personally offended)

I don’t judge them as much

Bluevelvetsofa · 28/06/2025 21:29

Nitgel · 28/06/2025 20:27

All kids should attend a local school that they can walk to

What about secondary schools? Our nearest were 4 and 5 miles away.

Or more responsible parenting.

That’s reminded me of another unpopular opinion - people who can’t be arsed to RTFT but still comment should be put on the forum equivalent of the naughty step.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 28/06/2025 21:31

We should stop young adult, male asylum seekers entering the country and prioritise women and children (proven to be children by medical assessment) asylum seekers.
We don’t need thousands of undocumented men.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 28/06/2025 20:03

Mashed potatoes are disgusting.

I can deal with most of the controversial views on this post except this. Now wash your mouth out please.

Asunciondeflata · 28/06/2025 21:31

Water, electricity and gas should be taken back into public ownership.

TheAmusedQuail · 28/06/2025 21:31

Here's another one.

If you're a performer who can't make a living from performing, it's just a hobby. All this 'I'm a singer-song writer' or 'I'm a dancer' when in actual fact you only do the performing aspect you claim a couple of times a year, you're not a professional. It's a pipe dream and you need to enter the real world.

Tapoopoo · 28/06/2025 21:32

dynamiccactus · 28/06/2025 21:23

I think there's a public policy debate to have - do we actually need so many children and if not, is it sensible for public money to be spent helping people to have them if we don't need them.

But you'd start a slippery slope - what else should the NHS be funding - or not.

For me IVF is a along the same lines as purely cosmetic procedures. My life would be significantly improved by lower blepharoplasty surgery. I could wear contact kebabs instead of glasses which improves things like swimming etc which improves my health... I would genuingely be much happier in myself.

However, does that fall under the NHS? Of course it shouldn't.

Not sure that is particularly controversial. Not with me, anyway!

Unless someone is genuinely in fear of their life - such as the Afghan translators.

Oh come on

Explain which humans are “more female” and “more male” and which ones fall bang in the middle.

Dee032 · 28/06/2025 21:32

I also think that the children of ‘mumfluencers’ whose privacy is not protected are probably going to have a lot of issues as they grow up. Imagine your potty training ‘journey’ is part of your digital footprint…
