What’s the most controversial opinion you hold?

1000 replies

NC28 · 28/06/2025 19:58

Do you want to share any opinions you have that are (or may be) seen as controversial?

Mine are probably around the severity of criminal punishment the courts should be giving out for certain crimes and what kids should do in the event of physical violence from peers. Both subjects can be quite provoking for others.

What are yours?

The internet has made everything worse.

Not everything but a lot of things. I think tech in general - there was a thread on this very recently.

That parents who think they are being fantastic when they say "my ten year old has never been apart from me" are often creating damaged adults who struggle to be independent and live very narrow lives.

Breastfeeding is so overrated and a lot of the research around it is bullshit. When your children grow up you realise just how stupid all the controversy around it is - because you can't tell which children were or weren't breastfed!

Younger women who have an affair with a married man with children and then get themselves pregnant are really stupid. If the man wanted a family life he wouldn't have had the affair in the first place! He wants the escapism of a life without those ties.

That's a true superpower there. Getting themselves pregnant. 😆

JohnnyLuLus · 28/06/2025 21:20

That changing your last name to a man's is anti-feminist and weak. That using the title Mrs shows you value yourself (and other women) by your marital status.

SquashMeDown · 28/06/2025 21:20

If someone is rehoming their dog because it’s aggressive or very difficult it should be put to sleep not put in a rescue centre to wait for a rare person who wants to take on a challenging dog.

Sad I know, but I genuinely believe this.

heroinechic · 28/06/2025 21:21

People without children in the car shouldn’t park in parent and child spaces. I don’t care if they’re only there as a courtesy, the space has been dedicated for people with children and parking there when you don’t meet that criterion (nor are you disabled) is cunty.

It’s not cheeky fuckery to ask someone if they would mind swapping seats with you as long as you are polite and don’t pressure, and would genuinely take “no” for an answer without retort.

OW are arseholes if they knew the man was in a relationship/had children. Yes, they aren’t as bad as the man. No they don’t owe you loyalty. Knowingly becoming the side piece and interfering with someone else’s relationship makes you a wanker.

I have a few:

The NHS should be about saving lives where it makes sense to do so, managing pain, and ensuring people can remain well enough to work/study. Our expectations are too high. I think things like fertility treatment, keeping people alive through artificial means, operating on people where there’s a poor prognosis, etc. should be paid for services.

A biological male cannot be a woman. I cannot believe that anyone seriously believes it. There would be outcry if I, a pale white, freckled, Irish woman, decided I was black and started appropriating black spaces and culture. I don’t, and can never have that lived experience. It’s not mine to take, and it’s insulting and reductive. You can’t just decide to be something you’re not.

For many people in a relationship sex is important. Sometimes people on here say that it’s not a need. It’s not oxygen or food or water, so your loved one can get along perfectly well without it. Perhaps, but good sex is like listening to music you love, or a glass of delicious champagne, or watching a great movie, or eating your favourite food. It’s one of the things that can make life rich, enjoyable, and precious. I am not saying for one minute that anyone should ever have sex they don’t want, but I am saying rather than unilaterally deciding you’re done with it, explore ways to get your libido back. Time and again on here we read of husbands having affairs, and then it transpires the couple haven’t had sex for two years. At that point, whether you like or not, you’re housemates. That’s a long way of saying that if you want to stop having sex with your partner make sure you both wholeheartedly agree to it.

Lack of sex never excuses an affair.

My ds was about 4 months old when I stopped. though he didn't have any teeth until later. But I was useless at making enough milk from the word go so finally gave up at that point.

K so because you were useless at making breastmilk (your words) everyone else should stop breastfeeding early too, because it makes you feel weird? GTFO! 🤣 The world doesn't revolve around you and fragile ego.

Personalised number plates are pure vanity. Extreme wealth is obscene, think the Bezos circus in Venice this weekend.
We still have no real understanding of the impact Covid has had on the population but it isn't good.
Mandatory sterilisation for women who are repeatedly pregnant and the children are promptly.removed by children's services.

And the fathers, presumably?

All reality TV should be banned.

LOL there'd be nothing on the TV except sport, several soaps, and the news if that happened.

I agree though. Much reality TV is dire. It's cheap to make and that's why we get so much.

IVF shouldn't be paid for by the NHS.
Im sorry.

Home educators should be regularly inspected.

Edited

I think there's a public policy debate to have - do we actually need so many children and if not, is it sensible for public money to be spent helping people to have them if we don't need them.

But you'd start a slippery slope - what else should the NHS be funding - or not.

I agree that wealth, or lack of it, has no bearing on intelligence. But I have done two degrees ten years apart and I was shocked at the low standards second time around. Open book exams, exam questions given in advance, being spoon fed the expected content of essays... and all that with a 40% pass mark! You'd have to try pretty hard to fail! Perhaps it's down to the individual institution, but my second degree was so much easier than my first

Interesting - my experience doing degrees 25 years apart is that my second degree was much more challenging than my first (first was from a Russell Group, second wasn’t). The assessment styles were different, but that doesn’t make it easier.

Perhaps it’s all subject dependent.

My unpopular opinion about higher education is that economics is pretty much useless as a subject and most economics graduates have an ego that’s exponentially higher than their ability.

Carcrash123 · 28/06/2025 21:24

People who drive fancy cars with private number plates are making up for something lacking in their life.

Me too! I think it's quite logical for them to spend it on drugs and alcohol.

Trounlet · 28/06/2025 21:25

Benefits need an overhaul, income support should require the recipient to do 5 days work oer week; litter picking, gardening for the elderly, befriending, cleaning road signs. It would make for a better society/environment and reduce the number claiming. PIP should be given to those in need, but also we need to put support into getting claimants into employment.

I doubt anyone knew. I didn’t do it in public. Even if he’d felt the need to discuss his bedtime routine with his friends (I can’t imagine he would though - he mainly liked to talk about superheroes, football and poo at that age) then he would just say “then I have milky before I go to bed”.

He is 12 now and doesn’t really remember anything from that age (he had a really lovely teacher who he adored but he doesn’t remember her at all 😢) although I have probably told him. He likes “when I was little” stories.

Like I say - it really wasn’t a big deal. I planned to stop around the time he turned 2 (as I did with his sister) but he felt very strongly he wanted to continue and his desire to continue was stronger than my desire to stop. (I might have re-thought if I had known just how many fillings my - up until then - pretty perfect teeth would need over the last few years. Apparently 9 years of calcium deficiency - pregnancy, breastfeeding, pregnancy, more breastfeeding - is not great for the old teeth.)

Thank you for replying and your honesty :) well it seems it was something your DS needed at the time and you were able to provide. Im not sure when my first true memories started 🤔 I think around 5 or 6. Such a shame we forget some lovely things from our childhood x

Other living creatures have just as much right to live on this planet as humans do.

Ceebeegee · 28/06/2025 21:25

Sabrina Carpenters new album cover is shocking . Together with her performances, she is a terrible example for young girls.

Choking during sex is not cool or edgy.

The Highland cow trend on anything from cushions to mugs to loo roll holders is naff.

I judge women that have kids with more than one man sorry but I just can’t help it! You don’t have to have kids with everyone you meet.

There’s plenty of men of with kids to different women, you just wouldn’t know as they don’t look after them! So I do hope you are judging them as much.

(FYI woman with 1 child so this isn’t being personally offended)

Lioncub2020 · 28/06/2025 21:26

Absolutely agree.

Me too. I'd go further allocate an island in the UK to deport UK criminals to as well.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 28/06/2025 21:26

Surrogacy is wrong and if you can’t have kids that’s life- people get handed all types of crap in their life, you don’t get to play with babies lives.
