I want to make it special and really mark the occasion. My 40th was a total let down. Looking for inspiration for my 50th

I’m in the same boat. I’d quite like a party but people can be so flaky, I’d be so nervous about there being lots of people dropping-out at the last minute.

Hotchocbombe · 27/06/2025 07:52

What made your 40th a let down?

Mercurial123 · 27/06/2025 07:54

My 50th was during Covid so my trip to New Zealand was cancelled.

DarkForces · 27/06/2025 07:55

I'm planning a 2 week long haul holiday or a cruise. It's not for a few years but I'm dreaming already!

What’s stopping you going now?!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 27/06/2025 07:56

Really big holiday - safari in Zambia. Highly recommend 😁

EmpressaurusKitty · 27/06/2025 07:56

I had a few days by Lake Como, staying in a room with a balcony view over the lake - lots of exploring, red wine & gelato.

MsPug · 27/06/2025 07:57

Bought a Mazda MX5 😂

frozendaisy · 27/06/2025 07:58

Hot air balloon ride

My 50th started off really well but sadly went right downhill so I am aiming to make up for it as I turn 60 this year. I did think about having an Irish dance ( can’t spell the word beginning with C 🤣) for one of my “ milestone birthdays” but I don’t think it would be cheap to hire a band, callers etc.

skippy67 · 27/06/2025 07:59

Me DH and the DC went to Universal Studios in Florida for 2 weeks.

Hermiaxx · 27/06/2025 08:00

I pretended I was 39 again and went to Venice!

  • always meant to go before I was 40 😉!
Handownduggies · 27/06/2025 08:01

Personally I wouldn't waste money on a party. I spent the best part of 6 months doing birthday things. Day itself myself and DH took the day off work for a treat day. We went a big holiday. I did quite a few one off type things I wouldn't normally do. Basically I treated a big chunk of the year as my birthday season!

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 27/06/2025 08:02

Nothing. Day off work and went to the tip and the gym. Lone parent, no family anywhere near me and a child with SEN.

RabbitsRock · 27/06/2025 08:02

Ceilidh

A parachute jump

Think I’ll probably do as a previous pp said & have several “ events”. I’m a winter baby so would save some of the celebrations for warmer weather. A party for friends wouldn’t work as I have lots of different sets of friends who don’t know each other. Definitely want to go on holiday finances permitting or on a long weekend city break at least - DD16 would deign to come with us to Amsterdam I think. A spa day would definitely feature somewhere. I had a Birds of Prey Experience voucher for my 50th & would absolutely love to do that again. It was amazing!

Lindy2 · 27/06/2025 08:08

My 50th was a bit delayed by Covid but when we were able to we went and stayed in a lodge at a UK safari park.

We had a rhino in the lodge's garden and when the zoo closed to the public we could ride around on a golf buggy and do an after hours tour.

Perhaps not as fancy as a big holiday but we enjoyed it and it's something a bit different.

I can't be bothered with organising parties and rather selfishly, I admit, I'd rather spend the money on myself than on food and drink for lots of other people.

Shetlands · 27/06/2025 08:09

I went to San Francisco, hired a Mustang convertible and drove down the Pacific coast highway with the top down wearing a headscarf and sunglasses (doing my Thelma & Louise thing). Visited Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey, where I went on a whale watching boat trip.

Also flew to Edinburgh for a long weekend with friends, which was great fun.

Gumbo · 27/06/2025 08:17

I had surprise brain surgery for mine. I don't recommend it - a really nice meal out with those I love would have been way better Grin

ShadesmarBead · 27/06/2025 08:19

I had a weekend in Hay on Wye, bought a lot of books and went to a baroque fusion recorder concert.

I also went to Paris and visited the flagship Guerlain store on the Champs Élysées and bought some beautiful perfume for my daughters and myself.

Ellmau · 27/06/2025 08:19

I was going to go to St Petersburg but it was in early summer 2020 so actually bugger all.

Agoddessonamountaintop · 27/06/2025 08:26

Went to New York for a long weekend. We stayed in the Times Square Hilton, lovely hotel but the location was far too busy. Next time went to the Waldorf Astoria in Manhatten, much less frantic.

Splat92 · 27/06/2025 08:29

I'm not really into big parties and regretted having one for my 40th so for my 50th I caught up with 5 friends separately doing things such as high teas and cocktail making classes.
