Don't forget that any expense on comms at the moment is a little bit of a gamble.

Imagine splurging £1 million on campaign that gets torpedoed by Trump doing something bonkers. Again. ?

cardibach · 03/07/2025 17:59

I don’t think it does. Those that would give a fair report don’t have the market share to deliver the value.

Social media does and they did a cracking job in the run up to the election.

ETA I love your suggestions @Notonthestairs, wouldn’t that be interesting?

Maybe they just need to have some fun. Bring Sue Grey back in. Extend Rayner's or Miliband's portfolios or something. Give Blair and Brown roles! Bring in Alastair Campbell. Remove the Tory appointments to the BBC. Prorogue Parliament. Announce a mini fiscal event without the OBR. Cheese and wine in No 10s garden. Break some swings. The seethers are going to seethe anyway and if it was good enough for the last government...
Or they could start talking about updating Leveson 2.

You mean "do a Trump" and flood the news cycle ?

Social media only tends to go to the already interested.

BIossomtoes · 03/07/2025 18:27

I don’t think that’s true. If that were the case Reform wouldn’t be using it so effectively.

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2025 18:29

"You mean "do a Trump" and flood the news cycle ?"
Yes. They havent gained anything from trying to work around right wing voters. May as well enjoy themselves. Farage is busily suggesting Cabinet members dont need to be a member of Parliament (and therefore accountable to Parliament - wonder why he'd suggest that eh?) so there will be plenty of support for bringing in Blair. Dont need to stop there. Get John Major on the payroll, he can begin conversations to rejoin! Get the Brexit bus out and set fire to it.

Sunak set a precedent by appointing Cameron as foreign secretary. If it was good enough for the Tories …

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2025 18:34

Exactly - Sunak was drawing on 'a wealth of experience' and getting Dave out of his shed.

Alexandra2001 · 03/07/2025 18:41

Blair is hardly popular, eg Iraq... Brown could work though but as with Cameron, it will bring on cries of "Haven't you got your own pool of talent?"

Surely Labour have skilled people already in the 'commons ?

Was it a "precedent" ?

Lords have been ministers before (and it wasn't popular then).

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2025 18:48

I wasn't being entirely serious (apart from maybe the bus and the cheese and wine). I think there has been tiptoeing around and there needs to be much less of that.

DuncinToffee · 03/07/2025 19:07

Labour tried with 'freebie gate' I think Chris Mason will be up for reviving that one.

It’s heavily reliant on what you’ve already looked at. Sadly lots of people have looked at stuff that means they are ripe for Reform bollocks.

Well the Conservatives invested by putting their mates in the BBC and made shure they threatened the charter once a week.

I'm not suggesting that Labour should do the latter.

PandoraSocks · 03/07/2025 19:43

LBC reporting 3 out of 10 people who voted Labour regret it.

Why not say 7 in 10 voters don't regret it?🤔

Agree it's wantonly negative 'spin'

Zarah Sultana has resigned from the Labour Party to start a new party with Corbyn

OP posts:
cardibach · 03/07/2025 20:53

Ffs. Splitting the left vote further is nonsense. And I get that just 2 (realistic) parties like the US also has issues.

Notonthestairs · 03/07/2025 21:16

Agree it will fracture the left wing vote. Might simply knock out both Greens and the new party.

She was in a furious rage earlier about Palestine Action and is so far left of the main bunch it's not a surprise. I actually like her, but I would, I guess.

I think the government's reaction to Palestine Action is ridiculous. Spray painting fighter jets isn't terrorism.

I like her too, but this decision is bonkers.

Agreed. I don’t get it at all.

BIossomtoes · 03/07/2025 21:30

Totally bonkers. I give their new party six months.

MaybeNotBob · 03/07/2025 21:34

We seem to be back in People's Front of Judea territory...
