Why do you think you would you be exempt from conscription?

Off the back of other threads. I think I’d be exempt from conscription due to the following:

Severely asthmatic
Diagnosed MH issues
Anaemia
Poor eye sight (-5.50)

What about you?

@Rosie8880 your comment reminded me of that elderly lady facing down putin troop in Ukraine with a gun

ducksinarow123 · 22/06/2025 22:58

I have a womb.
historically, that rules me out

Would conscription be needed? I would think most wars would be done via drones and long range missiles now. Obvs need some boots on ground but not as many as previous wars. Or are we talking conscription so we can help unemployment rates and get young people into something? If so, I'd rather the focus was on attracting new business and start ups and training people so antiquated ideas like conscription during peace time aren't used.

I’d be exempt because I live in the UK which doesn’t have conscription

😂

TheMumEdit · 22/06/2025 23:02

Solo parent to 2 young kids

Gardenbumblebee · 22/06/2025 23:02

Can anyone who’s in the know let me know when this war and conscription is likely to start? Will try and break my leg or have a baby to get out of it.

TIA.

heatherwithapee · 22/06/2025 23:08

Dodgy leg joints (knees and hips) and my age - I’m mid 40s. I’d be shit on the frontline but would be happy to play my part in an admin / more sedentary role if needed. I could sort bandages or something I’m sure.

Knitting gloves for you and me in the small library, m'lady. I thought I might also volunteer as co-ordinator so that I get a special armband and hat.

Old
Dyspraxic (although ironically lm not a terrible shot with a gun!)
Poor physical health
mental health isn’t great either

Solaire18381 · 22/06/2025 23:10

I can't imagine how anyone could get conscripted. Could you imagine having to prize people's phones off them to do training!! It just wouldn't work!

Overthebow · 22/06/2025 23:11

I have Autism, ADHD, asthma and hyper mobility so assume I’d be exempt.

HelloDaisy · 22/06/2025 23:11

Too old and eye sight is -10

Jambolass · 22/06/2025 23:13

Because I have MS and can barely walk the length of myself most days.

MsTada · 22/06/2025 23:13

I'm 13 weeks pregnant.

MrsApplepants · 22/06/2025 23:14

I’m a bit old and fat but If they’d let me have my own handgun, I’m there. I could definitely never actually shoot a person and would run away screaming from anything remotely requiring bravery but I really enjoyed target shooting in the US. I suspect this would not fit the criteria of suitable recruit.

Anything for the cause! Whatever that might be.

I actually have pondered further and wouldn’t mind being a spy. I’d like to sit in glamorous French bars (have we sorted the enemy yet?) spying away. I’d like to escape without any harm coming to me or being in real danger but then have books written when I’m old saying I was very brave and vital to the war efforts. Maybe a film adaptation or a podcast at the minimum.

I’m convinced conscription is right for the country now.

I imagine sales of jaunty berets and gaberdine raincoats will now soar

Hiding in plain sight. I like it.

Rather worryingly though there was recently a Yougov survey and a high amount of "eligible" respondents said they wouldn't be prepared to fight in a war even for their own country.

I don't think it's surprising. We have shafted the young so why should they fight? Perhaps the new power may offer a better alternative vs death, many countries are ageing and need young people.

The working class have always been shafted but this never seems to have hindered them being shoved to the front before.

I suppose actual willingness to fight comes down to whether you think there is a direct threat to people you care about and how immediate it is. I assume all the “absolutely not” answers are underpinned by an assumption that this isn’t and isn’t going to be the case.

I’d be so opposed to putting myself in danger for someone else’s stupid war, that I’d be an absolute menace until they sent me packing.

This actually happened to my great-grandfather. He got sent to France to fight (against his will - family legend has it he was so drunk and disorderly they had to chain up to get him on the boat), and got himself sent home six months later for “conduct unbecoming of a soldier.”

As for me, if short-sightedness is regarded as a good enough not to go, then for the first time ever I’d be pleased to be -13.5.
