No shoes in house people

if you are absolutist about this -

do you only entertain in loungewear? Have you nevwr had a dinner or a party at which people dressed up a bit, including shoes?

or do you expect people to wear frock, tights and bare feet?

Not sure what loungewear has to do with shoes? I wear indoor footwear, usually ballet slippers.

MrsGrowl · 22/06/2025 12:35

Never hosted that type of dinner, just casual so jeans/casual trousers, not loungewear. They take their shoes off and just have socks, same as when I go to their house.
Never hosted a party, but have taken my shoes off at house parties.

RominaDina · 22/06/2025 12:36

I went to an engagement party at someone's house, everyone was dressed up, but we had to take our shoes off. I've no idea why because they had a wooden floor.

Viviennemary · 22/06/2025 12:37

Not this again.

Yes indeed. Your house? On or off?

LlynTegid · 22/06/2025 12:39

Your rules, your house, not rules in mine.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 22/06/2025 12:39

I don't like shoes in the house as a general rule. I don't really understand the obsession with what people choose to happen in their own house. Some seem to see it as a personal affront.

DappledThings · 22/06/2025 12:40

I'm a shoes off person but for myself, not my house. So I would usually always take my shoes off at anyone's house. Weird to me to have shoes on inside houses.

If it was a my fancy dinner party with guests in full-length dresses? No idea. Never been to one or likely to. Having people over for dinner has only ever meant a relaxed evening without any dressing up in my experience.

blankittyblank · 22/06/2025 12:43

Actually a question for shoes off people - what about if you’re hoisting a bbq or something outside? And people are flirting between inside and outside? How do you manage the shoe situation then?

Kelim · 22/06/2025 12:44

Yes, I force all my guests to wear Snoopy pyjamas, what of it.

VitaminX · 22/06/2025 12:45

I live in a shoes off country - it is considered very rude to walk inside someone else's house wearing shoes unless you have express permission in certain circumstances, e.g. workmen coming in and out.

Yes, people sometimes wear dresses and shirts etc to house/dinner parties and also take their shoes off.

Kitchenbattle · 22/06/2025 12:46

Shoes off going upstairs as it’s carpeted. In the sitting room you would have to take off shoes if they were heels (wooden floors) wear what you want in the hall and kitchen/sunroom. I have spare slippers/slip ons in various sizes.

AgathaX · 22/06/2025 12:48

We are a generally shoes off household, but I would never ask guests to take their shoes off.

Friends visiting usually keep their shoes on, unless they want to take them off, and I'm completely happy with either. Family usually take theirs off, but they're not asked to. If they're here in summer and in the garden, they'll keep them on inside and out. Again, I'm completely happy and unbothered by this.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 22/06/2025 12:49

We're a shoes off household but I have no issue with guests wearing shoes.

I would never host a dinner or party though Grin

VitaminX · 22/06/2025 12:50

In a BBQ situation it's much more common for guests to go outside in socks than to put shoes on and off. Most people with gardens have a decking or paved area which is fine to walk on in socks. But some people may have slip on shoes that they do take off and put on again, up to them. If you're having a BBQ it's generally warm dry weather so it has never been an issue that I've seen.

On. Though some friends take their shoes off. I wouldn't dream of asking a visitor to do this. Really rude.

cakedup · 22/06/2025 12:51

I live in a small flat with no garden and I'm poor so can't imagine ever hosting a dinner party. In fact I can't imagine any scenario that would require people to dress up to come to my home.

fiorentina · 22/06/2025 12:52

We are generally a no shoes household but for BBQs, dinner parties etc everyone keeps their shoes on. Downstairs has no carpet.
Just mop afterwards.

I'm not a shoes off person, but years ago we had a party in the house and a friends wife started jumping up and down in her stalletos and put loads of dents in our wooden floor

greencartbluecart · 22/06/2025 12:55

If there wil be shoes we roll up the rug and mop afterwards.

Crocs Grin

But seriously, most people are perfectly capable of taking shoes off and on without fuss when going in and out of houses for BBQs, especially when they've been trained to do so since they first started wearing shoes.

Natsku · 22/06/2025 12:56

I don't host the kind of parties where people are expected to wear formal dress but if I did, they'd still take their shoes off because that is what everyone in my country does. Even if the President came round he'd take his shoes off.

Whosenameisthis · 22/06/2025 12:56

Off here. I don’t get why anyone would want to track dirt from outside through the house constantly.

the only “shoes on” house I know change into indoor shoes and leave outside ones by the door.

so if I were a shoes on person and wanted heels to complete an outfit in someone’s house I’d take them with me to wear indoors. Although heels can damage wood flooring 🤷‍♀️

for me shoes are like bra’s, I’m desperate to take them off as soon as I get home and find bare feet much more comfortable.

going in and out the garden I have easy slip on shoes like crocs of flip flops by the back door.

dh came from a shoes on household. His feet stank and he constantly got athletes foot. Since stopping wearing shoes in the house that’s no longer a problem. Don’t feet get hot stinky and sore in shoes all day?

MyIdealworld · 22/06/2025 12:58

Shoes off in my house or you can’t come in at all !

sparrowflewdown · 22/06/2025 13:01

I take my shoes off at home but would hate to be at a party in my socks or bare feet. There is something odd about seeing everyone's feet - it takes away their dignity somehow. Also I would argue it is unhygienic surely you could catch lots of foot infections, verrucas etc
