No shoes in house people

if you are absolutist about this -

do you only entertain in loungewear? Have you nevwr had a dinner or a party at which people dressed up a bit, including shoes?

or do you expect people to wear frock, tights and bare feet?

I had someone walked dog shit all through the downstairs of my house when hosting a party once.

MrsSmiff · 23/06/2025 01:21

Fairly sure Buckingham Palace isn’t shoes off. I’d much rather a bit of outside mud than someone’s sweaty socks or bare feet tainting my carpets. Yuk. We’re mostly shoes off for ourselves for choice and comfort but wouldn’t dream of insisting guests do this. Keep your shoes on please!

Buxusmortus · 23/06/2025 03:27

There's something so mimsy about making people take off their shoes to come into the house. I'm in my 60s and grew up in a shoes on house and have always had a shoes on house myself, in fact I actually can't think of anyone I know who has a shoes off house.

Sometimes I wear slippers at home, and if I'd been out gardening or a muddy walk of course I'd take my filthy shoes off, as would anyone who came to my house with really dirty footwear, but normal shoes, no problem.

It's summer now and I wear sandals with bare feet. I now have a large bunion and wear footwear that somewhat covers it up. I'd hate to have to walk round someone's house in bare feet exposing that to all and sundry, I'd feel very self conscious.

What happens if you have meals outside where people go in and out several times carrying food etc, do they have to keep faffing round putting their shoes on and off?

Posters who say they provide slippers for guests, do you wash them between guests? I hope so because why would I want to put my feet into shoes worn by someone else, nauseating.

Once again, crocs - perfect summer footwear for this reason Grin

All the hyacinth bucket threads have been going lately. As for this one, there’s usually a “shoes off” thread every month or so.

I live in trainers or sandals without socks, inside and out, so shoot me.

RampantIvy · 23/06/2025 06:46

Setting the dirt issue aside don't people just find it more comfortable to wear slippers or socked/bare feet rather than shoes indoors?

I have a pair of fake crocs by the kitchen door for when I want to nip out to empty bins, take stuff out to the compost heap (where the ground is muddy), pick herbs etc.

Lulu1919 · 23/06/2025 06:56

Family know that we are a no shoes house ...as do close friends
They bring slippers or socks
We do not sit on furniture in clothes we've worn outside
If we have friends round ..of course they can ...we then anti bac the furniture with fabric sprays
We also anti bac the loos after they have left too
We have hard floors so then clean the floors.

I can't wait to take my shoes off, don't understand how people can be comfortable wearing them all day barring foot conditions that need the support. As a child as soon as I'd come home from school I'd take off my shoes and socks and wash my feet in cold water and be barefoot the rest of the day as I found it so much more comfortable.

😂I assume you are being ironic here.

I find these (regular) threads very odd.
I have (I think) a fairly normal set of friends and acquaintances and vanishingly few are mandatory shoes off people - but if they are I'm happy to cooperate (although they may have to put up with my holey socks.)
For me my visitor's comfort is above everything else. If shoes are muddy please take them off, otherwise I really couldn't care.
The cats don't wipe their feet before coming in (but to be fair they don't wear shoes at all).
Personally I tend to wear walking boots all the time inside the house and out...

username2373 · 23/06/2025 07:22

@charlottestreetw1You are coming across pretty rude with your swearing and with what you said about the person who invited you in their house. And for someone with a London postcode in their username - rather unworldly.

Do you tell visitors to bring their own when they come to your house? Otherwise if they go in and out eg in summertime they have to faff around taking their shoes on and off every time. Honestly it would put me off going to someone's house if I had to do that. Luckily I know no one who has a shoes off house.

What if they are more comfortable leaving their (ok slightly as I can’t imagine anyone being rude enough to leave very dirty shoes on) muddy shoes on?

do you still put their comfort above everything else?

if you leave your shoes/boots on all the time do you sit and watch tv or on the sofa etc with your feet on the floor? Don’t you ever sit with your feet up? I’m sat now with a cup of tea with my feet underneath me. I would never put shoes on the furniture but sitting with your feet in the floor seems a bit odd..

You know footwear can cause bunions?

it’s not healthy for your foot bones to be constrained in shoes constantly- which is why people get bunions, corns, in growing toenails etc.

RampantIvy · 23/06/2025 14:12

Everyone takes their shoes off or offers to where I live. It us usually chilly and damp so most people have carpets or large rugs rather than hard floors.

I don't ask people to remove footwear and wouldn't, but people do anyway.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/06/2025 14:21

For anyone wondering.
No I don't scream at people to leave their shoes on 🤣 - they are welcome to do whatever they feel comfortable with.
I've never met anyone who would knowingly tread mud though a house (their own or someone elses)
And yes @Whosenameisthis - I sit down with my (booted) feet on the floor.

Wheen visiting our closest friends and vice versa, we take our slippers, but we are all mid 60s now.

No I don't tell them because everyone I know, with the exception of my elderly father, has no problem taking off whatever shoes they're wearing and putting them on again whenever needed, because they've all been well trained since childhood. Just crocs make it a lot quicker!

TallulahBetty · 23/06/2025 14:30

Again?!

If you want to come in to my house, you take your shoes off. Your choice.

😁
So are we.

I never understand the comfort argument regarding keeping shoes on (health issues excepted) because I find slippers far more comfortable and so do most people.

We never entertain formally nor do we have parties.

My parents and a lot of friends from my home country actually have ‘inside clothes’ and ‘outside clothes’. They change once they get home so they don’t dirty the house 😆

Natsku · 23/06/2025 15:25

I tend to change my trousers when I get home, but that's more because I want to get into comfy joggers than getting into clean clothes.

At nursery and preschool we have to provide a change of clothes for inside so they don't wear their clothes that are covered in sand and whatnot inside but that makes sense, small children play in the dirt.

username2373 · 23/06/2025 15:26

@kisskissare you sure this why they change their clothes though? I knew many people who put smart outdoor clothes, and change into home/older/comfier clothes so they don’t have to wash the smart clothes every time after needing to wear them for only an hour or two.

With the shoes - we wear them to protect our feet from all that’s outside on pavements and roads. Their purpose is to be worn outdoors.

Bigoldtable · 22/06/2025 20:49

Not standard in my eyes at all. And I wouldn’t dream of calling anyone “peasant like” on the basis of whether or not they remove their shoes. That is a reflection of you, no one else.

Why is something a reflection of me when it is some other country who thinks something. That’s such a weird thought you had.

FancyCatSlave · 23/06/2025 18:08

I don’t host parties of that sort, no. My family bring slippers when they visit-as do I at theirs.

Everyone I know is shoes off.
