As someone who has been both, I am intrigued to hear what people think!

OP posts:

Drinking alcohol at breakfast

PondUnderTrees · 21/06/2025 12:14

For example?

Emotionally neglecting your children

Having a second language spoken at home

Having lots of kids

But surely that’s largely situational? Buck’s Fizz on Christmas Day is obviously different to an alcoholic secretly slugging vodka at 8 am on an ordinary Tuesday?

witwatwoo · 21/06/2025 12:18

Packing your kids off for someone else to look after

WestSussexWitch · 21/06/2025 12:19

Scruffy bad mannered children.

Thank you. I was trying to fathom in what circumstances anyone of any income bracket is not judged for drinking alcohol at breakfast! This makes sense though and nothing to do with wealth.

I also don’t know people who are relaxed about emotionally neglecting children.

Money can’t buy class. I don’t know if any of the above things are considered not trashy just because someone is wealthy more that it’s trashy despite them being well off whereas a poor person doing the same is trashy and poor so a double score

MiloMinderbinder925 · 21/06/2025 12:23

Swearing. Having many lovers.

applegingermint · 21/06/2025 12:25

Not being overly bothered by how much time your children actually spend in school.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 21/06/2025 12:25

Owning a gun.

Tonkerbea · 21/06/2025 12:25

I've noticed middle class children can be in clothes that are bit faded ( but probably from polarn o pyret), with scruffy/ long hair, because middle class parents don't fear judgement so much.

For the record, my son's hair is very shaggy, so not judging anyone for not getting a short back and sides

Receiving handouts and not contributing to society.

People on benefits are seen as scroungers but receiving inheritance and employing accountants to get out of paying as much tax as possible is fine.

Soooo accurate!!! Along with drinking at breakfast. Did anyone say mimosas?!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 21/06/2025 12:27

i Find this in bad taste
i am on disability benefits poor but am still well groomed and a snappy dresser, or so I've been told, all clothing in natural fabrics from Vinted
Its not money or the lack of it, its mindset and interest
i I guess poor taste would be a toddler drinking from a bottle sat in a pushchair with an iPad in front of it
However you never know someone's circumstances, it may be a major achievement for someone to put clothes on and get out the door.
Live and let live.

SpottedDonkey · 21/06/2025 12:29

Grubby, tatty houses which smell of dogs.
Poor personal hygiene.

Although those are now very outdated ‘old money’ stereotypes.

BigDahliaFan · 21/06/2025 12:32

Prosecco at breakfast in Venice or a Buck’s Fizz in a hotel or Bloody Mary at breakfast v neat vodka at an all inclusive….one would be judged but adding tomato juice makes it ok….

You don’t know anyone who emotionally neglects their child? Are you trying to claim to be wealthy then (or trashy?)

Boarding school. Look at how the royal family treats small children historically. (In recent history). You are clearly not wealthy if you are trying to deny this one!
