So much smaller than the first time.

I hope the Lords throw it out.

BabyBump1212 · 20/06/2025 15:27

I'm for assisted dying but I feel now that people will be coerced or feel a burden to their families, but I don't know how it can be more regulated. I'm honestly not sure what the answer is...😔

LittleLlama · 20/06/2025 15:29

It is a difficult issue and the vote reflects this. It will be interesting to see if the Lords make any amendments.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/06/2025 15:30

In all honesty I haven't been following this in detail, but people whose judgement I trust and respect seem to think this is a very badly drafted piece of legislation, so I'm sorry to hear this. It won't fare well in the Lords, I imagine.

hattie43 · 20/06/2025 15:39

I haven’t been following it but as a concept I agree with it . They’ll be plenty of safeguards but I’ve never understood why we allow people to suffer and our animals a death with dignity .

CorneliaCupp · 20/06/2025 15:41

I don't understand how MPs can vote for legislation that has been rejected by every major medical and disability group, and still claim to care for the vulnerable. Sad day.

There aren't though, that's the terrifying thing! The committee have binned so many safeguards, which you would know if you had been following it.

I'm not against assisted dying per se, but this bill is utterly appalling, a complete shambles. I'm depressed beyond words that it has passed.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 20/06/2025 15:50

There are literally 0 safeguards.

If the bill passes it will essentially be each person for himself. And then it will only be a matter of time before it’s extended to mental illness/disability/the murder of dementia patients such as happens in the Netherlands and Belgium.

I understand why someone would want it in certain circumstances, but that doesn’t make it ok.

For every one person who legitimately accesses the service, there will be thousands who feel coerced/pressured/obligated to kill themselves or have themselves killed.

There is not a single country where this has worked out well. And if you do some reading up on assisted dying, it is rarely the peaceful end that people seem to think it is.

tripleginandtonic · 20/06/2025 15:52

I'm for a woman's right to choose, so I'm glad it's been passed so both men and women can have some choice over how they die in certain scenarios. .

Sassysoonwins · 20/06/2025 15:54

Relieved it passed but very concerned it won't go through the next stage. I will keep writing letters to decision makers in the hopes it gets through. Too many people have died of thirst in pain, no one should have to go through that nor watch loved ones suffer. Those that don't want a quick end can take the slower route but they shouldn't be stopping anyone else from ending their lives the way they see fit.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/06/2025 15:55

I cried with relief when this passed.

justasking111 · 20/06/2025 15:55

Pretty much yesr in Wales which doesn't surprise me.

ResidentPorker · 20/06/2025 15:58

Relieved it passed, but sadly feel it won’t get through the Lords. I want to die at a time of my choosing. I want that for my loved ones, if it’s their choice.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 20/06/2025 16:07

For those who want to die when they choose, suicide is always an option, surely?

Why should medical professionals have to aid someone’s death?

Why should the avenue for coercion and pressure be opened up.

In Canada people are offered assisted dying as an option rather than help. Is that what people want for this country? Because given the way that the government is heading towards eradicating the disabled that is exactly where it’s going to end.

Anyone who thinks that this is a bill which is going to work in anyone’s favour but the governments and unscrupulous families is deluded.

Assisted dying is the road to eugenics.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 20/06/2025 16:07

Hurrah

noctiscaelum · 20/06/2025 16:09

I'm glad it passed. Why can't people have dignity?

wordywitch · 20/06/2025 16:10

Im glad it’s passed. Forcing terminally ill people to suffer is cruel and inhumane, we treat animals better.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 20/06/2025 16:12

Very happy and hope it passes through the Lords.

As most of them are older, they are more likely to have experienced relatives suffering and so hopefully they will vote in favour.

Sadcafe · 20/06/2025 16:14

The thing is, even if it passes the Lords, it’s not mandatory, no one is saying because you are terminally ill you have to end your life early, it’s an option for those who would prefer that . I share the concerns about the worries re coercion, but hopefully that will be tightly legislated for, then , at least those who choose this, won’t be faced with having to do it earlier than they may otherwise choose due to the need to be well enough to travel for things like dignitas

nahthatsnotforme · 20/06/2025 16:14

I would much rather see good palliative care.

It isn't easy to commit suicide and ensure you do it properly.

You do realise doctors would be able to offer it to the patient, if this is passed, making them feel it would be better for their families if they just end it? You have a family member who's coming in every day to help care for them. The pressure and guilt they might feel?

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 20/06/2025 16:21

I don’t think there’s a chance it will pass through the lords without significant amendment.

Basically the government want to make it easy to kill off people which is why they’ve removed all the safeguards.

No more need to go through court or have the decision signed off by two doctors. Just pack them off with a load of drugs and wave goodbye.

think of the saving to the NHS.

And the “you wouldn’t let an animal suffer” argument is ridiculous. If it passes for patients with less than six months to live, people will change that line to “you wouldn’t let a cancer patient suffer” when the pressure starts to be applied to water down the bill to mental illness, disability, stress. How long before neurodiversity gets added to the bill.

The fact that the bill passed by such a slim majority needs us to sit up and take note.

Maybe there should be a referendum. I am positive it wouldn’t pass then. Because. Support for assisted dying has reduced significantly since the original vote.

Boredlass · 20/06/2025 16:22

I hope it goes through. It’s a disgrace what they make people go through at the end

ThejoyofNC · 20/06/2025 16:24

I'm very strongly against "assisted dying". But even if I weren't, I wouldn't trust this country to run such a scheme. They can't perform even the simplest of tasks and yet they expect us to trust them with the power to end lives? I feel sick at the thought of it.
