How much would you expect to pay for this tattoo?

Im not asking if you like tattoos. If you dont, may I strongly suggest you never get one and move along to another thread.

I know its not to everyone's taste and the good old cliche "bold will hold" etc etc but how much would you expect to pay for something like this?

I'm getting my children's birth flowers (yes another cliche, the thread is full of them) and have been quoted a price. Im happy to pay it because I like the artist's work but a few people have said it's expensive so out of curiosity, how much would you expect to pay for something like this?

Its £1 coin for scale.

ETA - It's my first tattoo so have nothing to compare it to. One of the people who commented has poorly done tattoos so I wouldnt listen to them and the other has well done tattoos but in a different style.

Go bigger if you can I have one on my ankle that's nowhere near as detailed as that and it on looks totally like a blob.

Very pretty those X

Flopsythebunny · 20/06/2025 12:08

However much the artist charges

Well yes its her money and her choice but why on earth do it?
What good does it do her children for heavens sake?

I know nothing about tattoos and don't think I'd ever get one, but she is allowed to spend some of her own money on herself, without it needing to benefit her children in some way (usual disclaimers about children being well provided for and given live and attention etc)

I'd have said around £175 to £200, so it sounds like you are paying roughly the right amount @Tapoopoo Looks like a nice tattoo. Smile

I only want one. I should have made that clear too

Ah dude. Famous last words that in the tattoo world Grin

Just remember it's a life long thing. You're spending a decent chunk of change on it. Look after it and keep it out of strong sunlight and it'll stay bright for years. Care doesn't end after healing.

Come back a photo when it's done

Ha! Grin

Though , I only have one myself and 99% of the time I forget it's there .
DD has 5 and loves them , the phrase My next tattoo often tumbles from her lips .
DH has 10 , running out of skin now !

@Tapoopoo
There's a "Tattoo" topic you'll get lots of advice and though it isn't immune to the odd H8RZ , you can get more informed feedback ( but it's a quieter thread )

KurtCobainLover · 20/06/2025 12:31

I'd have said £300 + for that level of detail. Also agree with other posters that you should think about getting it bigger as it will blur over time and could look like coloured blobs.

Sickandtiredoflife · 20/06/2025 08:44

Yes OP asked a question about the cost of the tattoo she wanted and the first few posters answered her with estimates of hundreds of pounds.

Perhaps OP is in the fortunate position of being wealthy and has the money to spare- although in that case she probably wouldn't have needed to start the thread- but for me that is a large amount to spend on something unnecessary when you have children.

I've never been wealthy and if I had a couple of hundred pounds spare I would delight in spending it on buying books/ toys/ clothes etc for my children to enjoy and benedmfit from. I wouldn't think of spending it on an adornment for myself.

So I posted my question.

And actually I think it's s healthy to have differing views on threads such as these because otherwise the impression is everyone thinks its normal to have tattoos, have cosmetic surgery or whatever. These are the type of threads where there is so much intolerance.

But it's not about you though, is it?

Do you post this on any thread where a parent gets their nails done, goes out with friends or buys a bottle of wine? Or is it only mums spending money on tats where we must think of the children?

BrentfordForever · 20/06/2025 13:03

Just heads up OP: get a good aftercare cream special for coloured tattoos . Likely the artists sells his own but if you do your own research you ll find good one based on reviews

I also used a special tan protection for tattoos while on holidays

avoid petroleum based ones

Andoutcomethewolves · 20/06/2025 13:29

I was going to say £200 too - it's a small tattoo but very detailed and the artist will presumably also have designed it?

My siblings are both tattooists and they would charge around that. They're also booked up months in advance so I don't think they're overcharging!

Just to add OP, my sister in particular specialises in cover ups/'fixing' old and blurry or just unwanted tattoos (the work she does is amazing!) so if it does go blurry in a few years you can always get it fixed!

HonestAquaMember · 20/06/2025 13:33

As someone with quite a few tattoos, PLEASE rethink getting a fineline tattoo. I know they're all the rage right now, but in a few years, it will be a blurry splodge and look like nothing at all.

There's a reason that Trad style tattoos age well - they have bold colours and thick lines!!!

We don't get tattoos to benefit anyone but ourselves. I'm planning one for my mum who died (no it won't say mum on it, nobody will know it's about her) so it's not for her benefit, it's for me to enjoy looking at aesthetically and to be a permanent tribute to her which I can wear. I have one with a representation of my son and also my husband, nobody would know what they mean unless I tell them, but it's for me. Tattoos are like jewellery or hair colour or make up - they are adornments. We get them because we like them - that's it.

FortyElephants · 20/06/2025 13:37

My artist charges £80 per hour. This would be about 2-3 hours I think.

yousillygoose · 20/06/2025 13:54

I pay my tattooist £50 p/h. I have one about the same size (also full colour) and it took just under 2 hours so roughly £100.

Tapoopoo · 20/06/2025 18:24

Sickandtiredoflife · 20/06/2025 08:28

I didn't insult anyone so why say I did?

I asked a question relevant to the thread.

Start my own thread about what?
About the cost of Tattoos? What would be the point in that when OP has already started one and posters such as myself have every right to post on them? How is it unfair on OP to post on her thread?

I asked "what is a reasonable price for this tattoo?"
You said "dont show off. If you get a tattoo, your children will suffer so buy them some books".
Yes its a public forum blah blah blah but your answer just doesnt make sense!

The OP is questioning the price, so it's completely relevant to point out that she may want to consider her financial priorities.

I never asked for financial advice or asked anyone to comment on whether I could afford it.

I specifically said "Im happy to pay it... out of curiosity, how much would you expect to pay...?".

Please can you explain how that indicates I need to "consider my financial priorities".

I will say if this is your first tattoo, be aware that a decent tattooist will not copy another artist's work, so if you find someone willing to copy your pictures exactly, run far, far away and find someone who will use your pictures as inspiration to create something unique for you.

Absolutely! These are tattoos from the artist I will be booking with. I wouldnt ask someone to copy someone else's work anyway.

But you're not getting the tattoo, its not your family and its not your money and mainly, I didnt ask so why does it matter whether you think its a lot to spend on a selfish frivolity?

I will admit its a selfish frivolity. 😆

If it was a choice between making sure my children were sorted or a tattoo (or any other selfish frivolity), then obviously, the tattoo wouldnt even be a consideration. If I wasnt financially able to pay for it, I wouldnt get it.

There was a post on here recently when a woman was asking for opinions on buying a rug. She asked if people thought she could afford it and if they thought it was a good use of her money. Your opinion would have been relevant on that post. It isnt on here.

i'd say £200-300 artist dependent.

Have you found the artist already? If not, make sure you find one who specializes in this style!

Yes, this is his work. I just need to wait for him to open his books!

Well it makes sense to me OP.

Get a tattoo if you want OP. If thats what makes you happy and you have money to throw away.

But why try and make it about your children?

How does having supposed references to your children in the tattoo benefit them?

The majority of mothers love their children but most dont feel the need to get a tattoo about it.

Most mothers want their best for their children and I fail to see how spending money on a tattoo enhances your children's lives

If you want to enhance your childrens lives spend your money on them.

Dont try and dignity your desire to get a new tattoo by involving your children in this when in reality it has nothing to do with enhancing their lives but is all about about you and what you find aesthetically pleasing and can afford.

@Tapoopoo

i don't know, because I've never had one.

Tree was one I was tempted to get & that was the tiny paw prints 🐾 going from your hip into your pants line. (I'm 56, it was 'the thing' when I was 16/17). But thank god I didn't as it would look more like I'd been trampled on by a St Bernard now 😩🙇🏻‍♀️

I have occasionally wanted one in the inside of my wrist, but have never wanted the same thing for more than 5 minutes 🤣so best I don't!!

Anyway. Back to your question... if it was me I'd find an artist that was highly recommended, incredibly talented at fine work & be prepared to wait & pay what they were asking. It's not like you can sell it on if it isn't great.

I paid £800 for my coffee machine & im not stuck with that on my body for life!

if you love it (them?) then find the artist first & pay what you need to!

Ive wanted one for aaaages. But yes, it was a case of making sure I wouldn't change my mind! 🤣

I know lots of people see tattoos as representing where they are at that specific point in their life or just something they like but I wanted something that was really significant to me.

Reading this thread while waiting for cosmetic dentistry appointment where I will probably end up committing to spending a few thousand just on myself, then I’m going to get my nails done. Thoughts and prayers for my poor neglected children who have never seen a book or a toy and wear rags to school and eat wood shavings 🙏

I hope your appointment went well and you get the result you want. 😁
