Who did kill Mary?* And other unsolved song mysteries

*Hazard - Richard Marx.

Anyone know what happened to poor Mary?
Do we think she's still somewhere down by the river, in that old Nebraska town?

Who shot the deputy?

I always thought it was Sheriff John Brown, to frame our singer who he always hated, and to give a plausible reason for why he had to shoot our singer. But our singer caught sight of the sheriff aiming to shoot him down so got there first.

I’ve always firmly believed that the boy who isn’t right did actually kill Mary. He’s too defensive. And wants to go on the run. And in the video doesn’t he set a caravan on fire? It feels prejudiced in 2025 to point the finger at him but the song was written in the 80s before these things mattered.

Nope, he was taken in for questioning, and the townsfolk fire-bombed his caravan while he was held for questioning. He returned to his caravan the next day and it was burnt out by the townsfolk.

It was the sheriff. This is the original music video. Pay attention to how much the sheriff appears in the background, and in the end Mary goes to get in the sheriff's car.
Also someone posted in the YT comments: "The sheriff did it! I met Richard Marx in Toronto in '94 at Much Music headquarters. I asked his opinion on who killed Mary and he asked ME what I thought instead. I told him that I thought the sheriff did it - and he said he was "inclined to agree". "
The music video lays it all out, step by step. It makes it more than clear who 'done it'.

Did Jolene take her man?

No, because Dolly stayed very happily married until very recently when her hubby died.

Is Gina still working the diner all day, or did she dump that ex-dock worker and is now retired on a nice little pension?

There is a later Bon Jovi song (cant remember what it’s called) that has the line ‘Tommy and Gina are doing ok’. So you can be reassured that Gina is fine and they are still presumably together.

He wasn't the hazard. The town is called Hazard!

Screwing around.

For the people who still can’t be arsed actually listening to the lyrics of Anything for Love by Meatloaf.

More than that though. It's said in each chorus too

Lins77 · 18/06/2025 07:42

Is this the way they say the future's meant to feel?
Or just 20,000 people standing in a field?

🤷‍♀️

Cyclistmumgrandma · 18/06/2025 07:43

As for The Monkees, so many questions

Why don't you be like me?
Why don't you stop and see?
Why don't you hate who I hate
Kill who I kill to be free?

Why don't you cut your hair?
Why don't you live up there?
Why don't you do what I do
See what I feel when I care?

Similar to Meatloaf song, what won't Hall and Oates go for?

They won't give her their soul. It's in the lyrics

One of the most gorgeous songs ever.

The answers are already in the song

She goes to the back streets of Naples where she is a child playing in rags. He tells us at the end of the (admittedly quite long) song!

Phew. Thanks. I shall rest more easy in life now I know.

Where do you go to, my lovely? When you're alone in your bed.

I know where you go to, my lovely .... cos I can look inside your head.

Bigger question - how is her name Marie Claire if she's from the backstreets of Naples? And how does she talk like Marlene Dietrich, who was neither French nor Italian?

Yes! I’ve always wondered this. And how does she sip Napoleon brandy without getting her lips wet - does she use a straw?

Maybe she opens her mouth really wide and drips it in.

Mrs Brown solved that one, she has a pair of Meatloaf knickers. On the front it says I would do anything for love, and on the back it says but I won’t do that.

This doesn't add up anyway, because he said he was down to cater to every fantasy she had, without question ;)

If he’s that easy to take, Jolene is welcome to him.

i read that Dolly wrote that song about a guy that used to make eyes at her husband who worked in the local bank.

And why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near?

The Carpenters wrote the song whilst sitting on the prom at Cleethorpes.

It was a very windy day and the seagulls actually kept appearing every time somebody dropped their chips.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 18/06/2025 12:37

Did Lisa Stansfield ever get prosecuted for child neglect by social services after supposedly losing her baby and only being able to narrow it down to 'somewhere in the world'?

What were she and Billie Joe throwing off the Tallahatchie Bridge?

I've always assumed it was their illegitimate newborn child.

I would have loved to seen that music video if they had made it! 😁

Always thought she was a bit disingenuous there. Claiming not to know why, why he's gone away. Then goes on to explain how she said terrible things and lied and in fact he gave her the reasons, the reasons he should go.

I mean come on Lisa, a little accountability please.
