Getting a tad nervous about Iran and Isreal if I’m honest

Is ww3 going to kick off? Iran have hit the US embassy in Israel and now trumps threatening direct military action.
My Mom has just come back from Cyprus and last night they saw missiles 😟

@SummerEve I've just seen that BA have started cancelling flights to Dubai from London so lucky you got out there when you did.
I'm even more uncertain about Cyprus now after Trump has now involved the USA (im.not saying whether this is right or wrong, just that its now happened) - i just can't see it remaining safe to travel there. I will have to just wait and see!

I'm not getting the link to dubai?

I'm not getting the link to dubai?

BA have cancelled tomorrows Doha as well....

Most airlines, as well as listening to government sources, also do their own assesment of security on routes and at the destination...

Chances are they or the insurers don't like something about those destinations ATM (we'll never know exactly what, but given the geography we can probably take a rough guess) and so they've pulled the destination for x days until the problem is resolved.

Look at flight radar

you will see that planes are not going over Ukraine or Iran (the latter is the link to Dubai)

This will impact many many flights all over the world

TwoTierBbq · 22/06/2025 18:52

@notimagain thank you

No that's not really the reason, there's more to today's changes than that.

For background Ukraine has been out of bounds for several years. Most western airlines have been avoiding Iran for multiple weeks, typically the likes of BA have been getting to Dubai by routing over Egypt, then across Saudi and approaching Dubai from the west or south west. PITA for some but it hasn't closed off most destinations.

What has just hanged is the US bombing last night (last nights BA LHR-DXB had to turn back towards europe) which might make very obvious western assets in the area terrorist targets, and now today there's talk of the Iranians trying to close the Strait of Hormuz....and that's a new problem because get a map out and you'll see the Strait is almost literally just up the road from Dubai.

If anything kicks off there (e.g. US Navy vs. Iranian) I don't think BA want to risk one of their aircraft being anywhere near it, so might be giving it a day plus to see how things develop.

Hello from Perth, Australia! Having woken up in Dubai to the news that the lunatic in the White House had only gone and done it, we then had to check out and head to the airport for our Australia flight. Thankfully we were flying Emirates and I felt pleased we were on a UAE carrier.

MushMonster · 22/06/2025 19:53

You are out of reach now! Enjoy Australia!
Did you see any missiles from where you were?

Hedjwitch · 22/06/2025 19:59

My friend is due to fly home from Doha on Friday....

No, not a thing. It seemed completely isolated from it all. We are watching the news very carefully though as we are due to fly back via Dubai in a couple of weeks so we are already looking at alternative options. It seems people trying to get home are getting re-routed all over the place!

Why do you think that? There doesn’t even seem to be a hint of that at the moment.

Well…

Clearly things have moved on given I wrote that post several days ago.

Don't think I'd be holidaying in Cyprus at the moment. It must be scary for those that live there, especially those on the British military bases.

People in Cyprus are. Living their lives as normal. Just this last weekend my family celebrated a wedding, a christening and a 21st birthday. We are fully enjoying the sun, fun, love and everything else life has to offer. Would you be hiding under your bed if there was a war going on in Normandy, Brussels, la Seine or Rotterdam?

No, of course id be getting on with things but I'd be on edge. I lived in Cyprus when things were tense many years ago and felt the same then. I just wouldn't take my family closer for the moment if it was only for holiday purposes, I'd wait to see if it simmers down.

Ffs those trying to prove that if women ruled the world they would start just as many wars as men do, please use your brain.
As has been stated, women leaders absolutely have to act in a traditionally ‘masculine’ way and no, I’m not going to tell you what that is. I lived through the Thatcher years. MT did not start any war. She simply reacted to male aggression. If the vast majority of the world was ruled by women then over time things would indeed change.
What we see now, as in yesteryears, is a dick swinging contest.
Netanyahu’s aim by bombing Iran was to draw Trump firmly into the fight, and it worked. Not one of these men, and I include the leaders of Hamas et al, not one of them care about the people they represent. They do not care if a million or 10 million people die. Make no mistake, they do not care.
This is why I’m bemused at the protests going on here.
Their own leaders do not care about their own people.
If I think about it ,I think about the future chaos it will being to the world my children and their children will live in.Not least the vast influx of young, male immigrants likely to flood into the UK, and how Reform will mop up from the total chaos.
All wars have damming negative effects, not just the immediate loss of life, but this will affect us, and in a very bad way.

MushMonster · 24/06/2025 06:46

They have agreed a ceasefire, 12 days to start with.
Let's hope all side stick to it and they find a diplomatic way of dealing with their problems. Let's see if they can use their brains and words.
At least it gives Summer and other people in the area or transiting through the opportunity to come back to UK without that much hassle.

Thank you 😊 I was in bed last night watching as UAE airspace started to close and starting to get a bit of a ‘hmmmm’ feeling!

Current view from Scarborough beach, Perth! Feels a long way from any problems.

Personally I would not travel to Dubai or anywhere in the Middle East for a holiday as now everyone are trying to get out of the country but not many can do it due to their jobs etc. Most of the flights are cancelled except for Emirares and some Ethihad . There are far more beautiful places in the world to go on a holiday which is safer. My daughters school send an email last night asking us to travel with devices as there may be a chance of home schooling next year . She is going into A levels and this is not a good sign , we are even considering if we should move her back to UK although it’s a bit late now .

veiledsentiments · 24/06/2025 09:03

Shortest ceasefire ever. Already started up again.
