Getting a tad nervous about Iran and Isreal if I’m honest

theclampits · 16/06/2025 10:58

Is ww3 going to kick off? Iran have hit the US embassy in Israel and now trumps threatening direct military action.
My Mom has just come back from Cyprus and last night they saw missiles 😟

Yes it’s terrifying, Trump is making things worse with his inflammatory style and we are unfortunately tied in to helping Israel and the US as an ally so the consequences of staying neutral wouldn’t be good for us .. but I also wish we could. I want no part of this.

LittleGlowingOblong · 16/06/2025 12:04

I’m also feeling nervous bc I feel the UK is overdue karma. Palestine was a British protectorate within my parents’ lifetimes. Our complicity in the situations in Iraq and Afghanistan is shameful. Our standing with Ukraine is not, but it’s still courting trouble.

We have such a long history of colonisation but here we still are, relatively safe on our wee island. Long may it continue but I feel nervous 😥

I have this eerie feeling that’s what’s happening is not only changing the present, and the future, but is also re-casting the past.

Couldn’t agree more

The post above on both Netanyahu and Khameini being angry old men is spot on except it misses Trump from the equation who will do anything at this time to take the spotlight away from what is happening in the streets of the U.S.
We have three crazy regimes ruling these three countries.

testest · 16/06/2025 12:24

I have a friend in Saudi (near the border so close to some of the action) who can’t get home as the local airports are closed & can also see the missiles. Very concerned at the moment.

I was on another thread querying whether this will impact on holidays to Cyprus as we have one booked for August. All the reports of seeing missiles from the island is really scary

I can't advise, only sympathise. It's a hard one. The distance between Nicosia and Tel Aviv is 1, 225 km which seems like a lot. But this morning's Guardian tells us that the Ukraine military claim to have attacked a Russian drone factory 1,000 km over the border in Russia's Tatarstan region. The report's been confirmed by the area's governor. Clearly, when you're a long-range rocket, a mere 1000 km isn't much.

Yes I feel nervous and a bit depressed about the world to be honest. A flippant part of me thinks "yeah, let them destroy each other". Then those of us who can actually get along with each other will be able to carry on with our lives. Not that simple, these issues are very serious I know.

Just wow!!

theclampits · 16/06/2025 11:42

I saw he’s sending fighter jets to Isreal? And I just thought oh why!! Surely they’ve got enough of their own ? It just really gets us deep into it and I would bet most of the uk think the same

We've had fighter jets in the region for years. Have some of you just woken up?

I mentioned him too. I agree it would be reckless to disregard Trump's presence in any of this; his role as instigator, agent provocateur and stirrer of chaos shouldn't be ignored. He is, however, sitting pretty for a while, having disabled any processes that can seriously breathe down his neck, at least till the mid-terms. Khameini and Netanyahu's situations are less comfortable. Khameini is 86, with a population that isn't happy with him for a variety of reasons, while Netanyahu has to hold together an increasingly fragile and fractious coalition to keep himself in power. He also has an electorate whose patience is running out and unlike Trump, he might actually have to face them in the near future. Trump's longer term difficulties might be bigger than theirs however, especially if they are persuaded to step back from hurling missiles at each other.

I personally wouldn’t go to Cyprus for everyone saying they have holidays booked. It’s too close and also I hate to say it but it’s an unnecessary trip! Holiday closer to home.

notimagain · 16/06/2025 13:03

That's because it's wrong..

It's probably less than 400 km, and FWIW Haifa to Larnaca is around 250.km.

Whether the Iranians have anything capable of going the extra kilometres that they could actualy deploy in the current circumstances, if they so wished ??

There does seem to be confusion in the MSM and elsewhere over these RAF fighters ...there's no way on earth Israel want's or needs RAF fighter assistance...

.

As I said my mom was there and she did say she wouldn’t go back at the moment, I think the fireworks scared her lol made it some more real I guess !

I just wish women could take over for a little while. Calm things down. Have some cheese and wine. Organise a few things and have it all sorted in a few days.

I used to think this, then we got Thatcher and the Falklands. If it does all kick off then there's no hiding place. We'll all be affected.

PandoraSocks · 16/06/2025 13:08

Why do you call Israel "Isreal" @theclampits ? I see this on other threads and have wondered about it.

Both Netanyahu and Khameini are angry old men running out of good choices. They are on the ropes politically and Netanyahu is embroiled in a criminal trial. Going to war is wearily predictable of them and very dangerous because Israel has nuclear weapons and Iran has allies with them. Trump's difficulties are both less acute than theirs and more serious in the long-term, because he's turning the most powerful economy in the world into a dumpster fire and the more he can distract attention from that, the better for him. I agree with what people are saying, its a terrifying mess.

Your very good post reminded me of this cartoon from today's Guardian

Getting a tad nervous about Iran and Isreal if I’m honest
ninjahamster · 16/06/2025 13:17

I wouldn’t cancel holidays to Cyprus just yet, things change politically all the time. As I said before, my daughter is currently in Cyprus and it is fine.

I’m sue to fly to Dubai on Saturday and I’m scared stiff .

yeah my anxiety got the better of me, and I postponed my solo trip to dubai this week as well. I know it’s saying that it’s safe for now, but don’t want to be trapped there if anything escalates in the region. I couldn’t get a refund for everything, but better safe than sorry I guess 😞

DiaryofWimpy · 16/06/2025 13:25

Can you link to where planes are being sent to Israel specifically. All I can see is the Middle East in general. That is nothing new.

veiledsentiments · 16/06/2025 13:32

Cyprus is fine at the moment. They do keep telling us to check where our nearest shelters are, however, they did this at the start of the war between Palestine and Israel. The press at the time said they had enough shelters for 30% of the population but they were working on it. They haven’t worked on it and the so called shelters are just underground carparks. It does feel a bit ghoulish when you’re sitting out eating your dinner and watching the missiles go over knowing their intent.
