That's really very cruel. Can you imagine if Cardinal became a Cardinal? Confusing.

I expected better of Cameron. Two truly horrible names.

St John (pronounced Sinjun)
Ralph (pronounced Rafe)
Eustace
Gaylord

Ralph isn't pronounced Rafe, its not a silent 'l'. They possibly share origins so are split variants but are different names with different pronunciation from different cultures.

Rafe is greatly on the rise as a name in the UK since 2000, its gone from not ranking to sitting around the 200 rank since 2020. Ralph is in the top 100 since 2017.

Mackerelfillets · 16/06/2025 11:01

They all come back round. Popular names in the 20's and 30's have come back. So names popular in the 60's and 70's will be chosen going forward. It will probably be the next century before we get another Karen though!!

Ralph is pronounced both "Ralf" and "Rafe", possibly depending on region and social class.

I don't think any names ever completely die out. They just cycle in popularity. But you don't see many male Evelyns or Hillarys any more.

SuziQuinto · 16/06/2025 11:07

I once worked with a man called Vivian.

TheTecknician · 16/06/2025 11:15

Deborah and Ira are popular in Jewish communities so I'd say they're safe.

I was saying that I think people are unlikely to use that combination of spelling and pronunciation now. I know several Ralphs who are pronounced Rafe. As someone else commented it’s probably a class thing. I think most parents now would either call a child Rafe, or Ralph (without the silent l) rather than having to clarify pronunciation/spelling at every introduction.

Never met an Yvonne under 60.

I know an Yvonne in her 30s

MidnightMeltdown · 16/06/2025 11:38

I don’t know any young Gaylords

Donald

Donald is a traditional and much loved Scottish name. My teenage son has a friend called Donald. The name will outlive any current world events!

MidnightMeltdown · 16/06/2025 11:45

For girls I think it will be a while before Phyllis, Shirley, Pamela and Beryl come back

TryingToRecover · 16/06/2025 11:52

ShellieAnn · 14/06/2025 14:45

Keith, Barbara, Barry, Tracy, Mark.

My DS is called Mark. He’s 17

There's threads regularly asking about Nicholas for a baby with almost universal approval. And John is a great name, will never go out of use because so many families have a John.

Sally is a very underrated name in my opinion. I love it. I don’t think it will die like some of the others

YourChirpyFatball · 16/06/2025 12:02

I just imagined twin girls called Phyllis and Shirley. I think they're actually lovely names and deserve a comeback.

Mark is a lovely name

teksquad · 16/06/2025 12:22

I know 3 teenage boy Marks.

Nigel surely is never coming back. Ditto Wayne and Gary. Richard, Terry, Simon, Dave will be a struggle I think. But once all the blokes in their 50s and 60s called this are gone maybe they'll be the new trendy 'old man' names, among with Gemma, Julie, Tracey, Claire, Michelle etc.

Commonsense22 · 16/06/2025 12:23

Barbara

Mark and Linda and Julie are nice names. They'll definitely stay around. For a name to disappear it needs to really associated with a bad event or person or to have a really ugly sound. Nigel meets both those criteria.

Haha my neighbours called that and I now have bad associations with the name so I think you’re onto something there 😆

Someone may be making plans for…Nigel. ;)

Tracy and Mark we have in the school I work in

Enoch - I actually really like it.

Thank you so much. We wanted a simple name that couldn’t be shortened.
I liked the name Michael but don’t like the inevitable Mick!

I know a 17 year old Gary, a very small Jean, a teenage Percy.
There's also quite a few younger Gordons in Scotland still too.
Hard to predict really as I never thought Stanley and Douglas would come back, or Ada and Ava, they were proper old people names when I was young (48 now!) - yet there's loads of kids with these names now.
