Lots of the names suggested here are popular in young children where I live! And I consider some to be quite pretty names that could definitely come back in future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Clive, Joan and Hilary are gone for good though.

BlueFlowers5 · 16/06/2025 03:49

Gary is always popular in Wales as it's the shortened Gareth, Alan also spelt Alun is popular too.

And if you attend an RC church, the saints names are used - Gertrude, Catherine, Stephen, Mark, Hilda, Peter, Nora, Margaret...

My vacuum cleaner is called Don.

Trump has helped that on its way. I doubt Keir will ever take off.

My husband is called Gary!! He’s 53 and hates the name.

Tell him to be grateful his parents were not the Beckhams - or the Geldoffs. Then there was that stupid prat Jackson who called a child Blanket. My pet hate is place names, Paris, Jordan, Leigh, Courtney. Where I live Courtney Road is where the council top is!

Oswald, pteradactyl, ptolemy, nora, Betty....random I know but

I know a six year old Nora

Geraldine, I went to school with a few Geraldine’s and also worked with one but I don’t know any younger than mid 50s.

This is true, I did also!

Agree no one under the age of 50 (or more!).

ArcticBells · 16/06/2025 06:02

Alison. I don’t think that will ever come back

kezzykate · 16/06/2025 06:05

Some of these are suggesting names which are really quite popular. I know lots of smalll children through my own and through work and Betty, Olive, Barbara, Percy and Nora are all quite common. I also know a little Cedric, a couple of Darrens, Ethel and Joan. Not sure we can rule out any name.

pebbles8811 · 16/06/2025 06:32

I had a baby Garry he’s just turned 13

Luvtheinlaws · 16/06/2025 07:15

Derek
Gladys

These two I can agree might have had their last airing. Also Dennis.

I haven’t heard of a Debbie for some time but can see that coming back.

morethanspice · 14/06/2025 14:52

Olive

Olive is actually pretty popular I believe!

Fernhurst · 16/06/2025 08:02

I think any biblical or saint names that have stood the test of time will probably come round again.

BunnyLake · 16/06/2025 08:05

Gran16 · 15/06/2025 20:25

Jacqueline / Jackie / Jacqui
Julie / Julia
Sophie / Sophia
Alice
Stephanie
Elaine
Eleanor
Louise
Caroline
Jessica

David
William
Christopher
Samuel
Thomas
Daniel
Andrew

Sophie (Sophia) are not in any danger of dying as a name. Nor are the boys names. What makes you think Daniel is a dead name?

perfectstorm · 16/06/2025 08:18

Roger. Fanny. And Adolf, obviously.

Otherwise, I've known kids called pretty well all the names cited above... unless they were super popular in the 70s, in which case they'll roll around again in time.

Debbie is short for Deborah

ChocolateGanache · 16/06/2025 08:36

I’m guessing there will be less Karens for a few years… Sharons, Tracys….

Markovenchip · 16/06/2025 09:01

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/06/2025 18:49

Nooo.
Norah’s lovely. So is Ira and Doris. Queenie and Herbert are just cute.

I totally agree, it would pleasant to know children are given names associated with the past.

Paaseitjes · 16/06/2025 09:05

Edith & Alf were considered every bit as bad as Gary 20 years ago! They'll come back

Cameron Diaz’s two children - Raddix (surely a toilet cleaner?) and Cardinal. Let’s hope those names lived and died within a nanosecond.

ChocolateGanache · 16/06/2025 08:35

I think Deborah should be a much more classic name, I think it’s lovely. It irks me no end that it was a name on my mum’s maybe list but she chose a bloody awful name instead (and didn’t even give it to me as a middle name, gave me her name instead 😕).

JollyCyanCat · 16/06/2025 10:28

Cecil
Kylie
Bevan
Leslie for a boy
Chauncey

That's really very cruel. Can you imagine if Cardinal became a Cardinal? Confusing.

Emanwenym · 16/06/2025 10:37

@BlueFlowers5 , Gary is always popular in Wales as it's the shortened Gareth, Alan also spelt Alun is popular too.

Gary and Gareth are two different names, as are Alan and Alun. The pronunciation of Alun is AL-inn, but some say it as Alan.
