I've only read to the bottom of page 1 but I'm surprised no- one has suggested my name: Pauline. Including me, I know three, all about the same age and Northern. Two of us are inclined to be bossy and outspoken like the Pauline in League of Gentlemen. Please Mumsnetters, if you are looking for baby names, walk away now. I hate my name.

I think Pauline falls into the category where the pronounciation is everything.

Paawleeen - bloody awful
Pauleen - rather nice.

I had a Polish cleaner called Powlena (Paulina). Lovely.

Some of the old lady names have a similar feel - when strangulated, they sound awful, with an Oxford accent, they sound lovely.

😁 I love it when there’s a cat called Nigel or something.

I've had cats called Bert, Doris and Dennis. I currently have a foster dog who I've named Frank 😂 😂 I have friends with cats/dogs named Dave, Keith, Alan, Malcolm and Michelle 😂

Almahart · 15/06/2025 20:19

I know a little Eric and a Dennis. I think Roger will be back too.

Agree Gary unlikely to have a resurgence

I love my name Stella but never hear it these days. So it will die out with all the old lady names.

AngelaBB · 15/06/2025 20:40

You just don’t know what will come back. When I was a kid in the seventies, I was surrounded by Peters, Stephens, Lynnes and Carols. I would never have dreamed that Emily, Jack and Charlie would become popular, perhaps Kevin and Barry will be the chosen names of the next generation.

ToWhitToWhoo · 15/06/2025 20:40

Actually Sophia, Alice, William, Samuel, Thomas and Daniel are quite common among the young children whom I know- I know of one primary school class with three Samuels. Agree that Jacqueline and Caroline are unusual nowadays, but I wouldn't be surprised if they came back.

A few years ago I taught a yr12 girl called Stella. Lovely girl, lovely name! She stood out amongst all the girls called Izzy, Lily and Eva.

AngelaBB · 15/06/2025 20:42

TheTecknician · 15/06/2025 20:59

I maintain that Keith is long overdue extinction and would add that Malcolm is not far behind. Malcolm's only saving grace is that is a two syllable name and can therefore be shortened - with caution. I'd rather be Mal than Colm.

I swear Stella is suggested on 99% of the baby name threads on here yet I’ve never met one irl!

Maybe Gerald? Although clarkson’s farm may have given it a revival 🤣

Was just about to say this- lots of those names are currently popular, so not names that used to be common, but are unlikely to come back at all.

Almahart · 15/06/2025 21:28

I know a baby Stella. Fab name

Why not ?

We have no idea how any of the "classic" names posted in this thread have been received over the years. As well as the fact that a lot of "odd" names in the Anglosphere are perfectly normal names elsewhere.

Is it just me, or is this thread slight - if not understandably - AngloEuroCentric (if there is such a thing 🤔)

This thread is fun... its interesting reading other peoples thoughts on names.
The names I mentioned are often seen as "chavvy" names. I hate that word but that's sometimes how they are thought of and portrayed.
So I was pondering how long they might be around because of that connection.

Manthide · 15/06/2025 21:41

My dad's called Colin and I'd love it if one of my grandchildren was named after him but highly unlikely. It's funny, his grandad was called Archibald and I would never have expected that to become popular as in Archie.

Violinist64 · 15/06/2025 21:50

Around ten years ago, I taught an eleven year old called Jane. I was born in the sixties and Jane was one of the most popular girls' names at that time but I had not come across a young Jane for many years. It was rather refreshing in a sea of Graces, Alices, Florences, Sophies, Olivias, Eleanors and Charlottes, which were the "in" middle class names at that time.

Violinist64 · 15/06/2025 21:54

Oh, and I remember the first time I came across the name Willow, around ten years ago. Sadly, the child's entire family were somewhat sturdy in build, to say the least, so the name was unlikely to be descriptive in this case.
