Vernon
Roderick
Rodney
Maurice
Norman
Raymond
Barry
Roy

Brenda
Janice
Vera
Marilyn
Marlene
Trudy
Doris
Mavis

Roderick always reminds me of the scene in Life Of Brian.

And Marlene always reminds me of Only Fools And Horses.

My husband is Gary. He has (jokingly, I hope) suggested that our children should be called Gary and/or Garyna 🙄 Didn’t want children, anyway.

Through work I met a Gary whose son was named after him, so it has a few years yet.

Wayne, Sharon, Susan, Neville likely to go.

Emanwenym · 15/06/2025 18:12

@CommonAsMucklowe Marion and Susan will come back.

What a load of rubbish this is!!!

It’s a bit of fun, dear. Calm down.

Flozle · 15/06/2025 18:15

😆😆

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/06/2025 18:15

ALL names, even the ones we think of as hopelessly dated because they are the names of our mum's friends will come back. In fifty years or so the Dorises and the Berthas and Dereks will all be fabulously historical and have a 'ring' to them...and they will be back.

My aunt (born 1925) was called Poppy. I grew up with that being a ridiculously old fashioned 'granny' type name. Then we got to around 1998 and every second girl was called Poppy. This is how it works.

TattyBluebell · 15/06/2025 18:16

What do you think about names that are "modern" now? Do you think they will have around for long? Names like Chardonnay, Diesel, Kayden, Porsha type names?

blowingbubbles1 · 15/06/2025 18:16

Isis, Karen (both for obvious reasons), Gary, Ian.

JCS1000 · 15/06/2025 18:20

I always think there’s a certain age group, maybe late 1960s to 1970s that have certain girls names Julie, Linda. Ann, Louise, Karen, Susan, Jane, Claire, Elaine, Joanne etc etc whereI expect those people (me included) to be of that age but likely won’t see those names again. Similar to men’s - Keith, Nigel, Gary, Barry, Neil. I remember feeling a bit embarrassed when people used to ask my mothers name as it’s Molly and in those days it was like saying Hilda and now Molly is such a popular (lovely) name.

Why not ?

We have no idea how any of the "classic" names posted in this thread have been received over the years. As well as the fact that a lot of "odd" names in the Anglosphere are perfectly normal names elsewhere.

Is it just me, or is this thread slight - if not understandably - AngloEuroCentric (if there is such a thing 🤔)

Heyhoitsme · 15/06/2025 18:25

Cedric, Ronald, Stanley, Margaret, Vera, Eileen.

housethatbuiltme · 15/06/2025 18:25

They will all come back round, they are dated to us but will be fresh to our grand kids. Many getting listed here are already on the way back in.

We will have children or grandchild proudly introducing us to our newest family members Gary Wayne & Debra Tracy while we have to try and bite our lip (either that or they'll name them something future trendy 'word' style like Wind and Flaxen)

Also I'm only in my 30s and grew up with several Gary's, its very much a standard 80s name along with say Kevin and Darren etc... certainly wasn't super rare and only 50s+. Its very much in the dated 'dad' name category at the moment though. It will be back by 2050 I bet.

Very few names fully retire, maybe Gaylord, Dick & Fanny have because as negative slang they had strong staying power but even many old insults are dying off as we become more PC. Like how Jesse is in the top 100 charts now as a boys name.

Another Boris Johnson child 😆

Roy

SuziQuinto · 15/06/2025 18:31

One of David Tennant's children is called Doris. They also have a Wilfred and an Olive. Another child is called Birdie, which I thought must be a typo for Bridie?

ThatsItIveHadEnough · 15/06/2025 18:32

I think you would be surprised at how many people are choosing 'old fashioned' names for their babies (they are also naming pets human, old fashioned names too!)

I teach baby signing (babies from birth to 2 years) and have done this for 17 years. During this time, I have seen many, many old names revived and used again and again.
I also have 2 children of my own and joke, especially about my son, that when he gets married (if he gets married) there will be a cackle in the church when they read out his full name, "Will (first name) Douglas Gordon take this person to be their lawful wedded partner?" Poor kid!
He is named, as a tribute to my dad who passed away and my husband's dad.
My daughter is similarly in the same boat, (first name) Lynette Jacqueline, named after my sister who passed away from bowel cancer and my husband's mum.
I love the old fashioned names! Their first names are also old fashioned but from Latin and Roman origins

JustAnInchident · 14/06/2025 14:50

Definitely Gary. Keith maybe, possibly Kevin? Vernon?
I know a couple of little Percys, preschool age.

Edited

Aww, Percy is such a cute name for a young boy - I associate it more with grand dads. I wouldn’t name any child that though as I’d just worry they’d be name called Percy Pig 😬

PlumpAndCircumstance · 14/06/2025 14:49

I think Mark has never fully gone away, and will definitely have a revival, along with Paul, Stephen and Jonathon, which in my mind are similar vintage.

i don’t expect Percy or Barry to come back.

I know a little Percy, around 8 I think

pomers · 15/06/2025 18:33
