I know a 2 year old Bonnie. Her dm knows of 2 more.

Bonnie Langford reappeared in Doctor Who 2 years ago, so may have sparked a mini revival.

Stanley
Sidney

i know 2 women who have got boys under 5 with a Stanley and a Sidney! Named after their grandads!

Move22 · 14/06/2025 18:32

I met a puppy called Gary only last week, does that count?

You absolutely know how old a Sharon or a Susan are going to be 😁. Betty is Elizabeth isn’t it? A classic name but not one I’ve seen on young kids.

Yes, you can often have a good guess at a person's age by certain names.

Mine is a classic case of that! Haven't seen it mentioned but it is kind of foreign, but I've seen it a few times here in UK on UK born people that I know. We are all the same age lol 😊

Stanley
Sidney

I have come across both of these names in young children in the last year (in Canada)...and the bearers of those names were girls.

I know a teenage Flossie, so that abbreviation is still going.

Every Brownie has traditionally been known as "little Flossie" in Guider stories, except in Scotland where they are all "wee Jeannie".
I did actually know a Florence who'd be about 18 now.

UmmH · 14/06/2025 18:35

Never met an Yvonne under 60.

I think Walter has completely died out. Don't know any that wouldn't be over 100 today.

I know a 12 year old Walter (Walt for short).

I’ve heard of Sidney as a girl’s name before, but never Stanley. Think I prefer them both as boys’ names actually.

I have friends in the UK, France and Italy and they have children under 10 called:

ALBA
AURORA
DAWN

I also know a BETTY, OLIVE, ROSE and a PEARL all under 16 too!

x

I have a friend called Dawn whose Italian in-laws call her Alba because it's Italian for Dawn!

goudacheese · 14/06/2025 18:37

Jeremy, Leslie, Craig.
Lesley, Debbie, Christine.

Never met an Yvonne under 60.

I had an aunt called Yvonne. Her kids drove her mad as they called her Whyvonne when they wanted to wind her up.

Butteredtoast55 · 14/06/2025 18:39

I've just read a book where a baby is named Gladys and the main character comments and n how awful it is, and I wondered whether it will be making a comeback soon. I sort of like it!

CantStopMoving · 14/06/2025 18:39

JudgeJ · 14/06/2025 17:45

At least it wasn't abbreviated to Flossie, which was Aunt's everyday name.

It is fascinating everyone’s experiences of a name. I love Florence - it is in my family and the abbreviation is traditionally Flo or Flossie

Florrie is actually an independent name of its own. I have a great Aunt Florrie.

and I know of at least 3 Florences under 16 so it’s clearly quite popular!

Butteredtoast55 · 14/06/2025 18:40

Florence is, indeed, very popular recently. I know four under 12 and one in her 30s.

Florence was apparently the 8th most popular girls’ name in England & Wales for both 2022 and 2023 according to the ONS.

I can’t see Brenda ever coming back, was there ever a time that sounded nice?

Maureen
Beverley
Brian
Sheila
Derek
Valerie

These are names I have never come across on younger people.

There's a Derek in my extended family. I'm not sure how old he'd be now. Somewhere between 8 and 11.

Sidney has become popular for girls in America. I just can’t get on board with it being a girl’s name, it’ll always be a bit of an old man name to me.

Isn’t it usually spelt Sydney for a girl? I remember my friend’s sister was called that at school so she must be about 50 now

Caspianberg · 14/06/2025 18:45

Walt was also on our list. I don’t know why it’s not used more tbh, it’s easy to spell and short so goes with most surnames.

Wilbur is much nicer than William

Hector I haven’t heard recently

Susanna we would have used if Ds was a girl in middle name after grandparent

Phylis was my grandmother. Never hear baby Phylis

Bickybics · 14/06/2025 18:49

MIL wanted me to call DD Yvonne and was most upset I wouldn’t comply.

My boss called his baby Ruby in the late 90s and everyone was so shocked!

The problem with Gordon is "Gordon is a moron". For this reason I think it's unlikely to return.

Edited

Was this a tv show? I know a handful of Gordon’s and have no idea about your phrase. One is a moron though lol

It was a song, was in the charts in the late 70s.
