Thing is, you have to be quite old - as I am - to think that Maud is an old lady name. And it's because when we were young, there were old ladies called Maud and Dolly. Just as there were old men called Bert and Ron.

There aren't now. They're all dead. Now people's Nans and Grandads are called Tracey and Mark, Lynn and Andy, Cath and Nick.

To new parents, Maud and Albert are ancient mythical names untainted by outside lavs and endless stories about the Blitz. That's why they come back.

Ditto Violet. ‘Oh God, no. old Aunty Vi’ Now all old ones mostly dead. My Mum’s gen see Ena Sharples.

Marigold too. Gladys I can’t see making a resurgence.

It will, though.

I'm not sure any will die out a lot seem old-fashioned at the moment becsuse they are the names of older people but they gp in and out of fashion
I m 51 and has a friend at school with a very old fashioned name, Grace, now there's loads of them.

itgetsthehoseagain · 14/06/2025 16:48

Surely “Roger” because of its verb version…

knowifIcando · 14/06/2025 16:48

All of these names will come back. They are just becoming the old ladies/men names, which will come back into fashion in a couple of decades.

It’s the Myras and Adolfs, so associated with such horror, that won’t come back.

It will, though.

Am sure you’re right. I’d go for Joan ahead of Gladys.

89redballoons · 14/06/2025 16:53

I know a Gary in his 30s, and a Gareth in his 20s. No kids called Gary though.

I do know under 5s called Percy, Olive and Bonnie. My friend who works at a nursery has taught an Ian and a Glenn!

Most names come back around. Quite a few mentioned on this thread are coming back already (Olive, Percy, Maud etc.)

I knew I'd see my DD name on this thread. She is one of only 83 born in the UK the year she was born (though actually she wasn't born here). It's a name that is v common among elderly ladies, not very common in Gen X or even I think Boomers (the ones I know are mainly 80+).
So it hasn't died but it's pretty rare. It's a name with a lot of nicknames but I don't know any with just a nickname either.

That could easily be my name. If so, there's a name derived from it which was not very common when I was growing up but seems to be having a moment now. I passed one in the park this morning. I believe it was a nickname used for a Royal personage so may have been picked up when The Crown was going out.

MumWifeOther · 14/06/2025 17:00

Hopefully Darren. And Karen actually.

It's aging hipsters reproducing and giving their kids the names that old blokes had in their childhoods.

There are regional variations here. In England a woman called Audrey is going to be elderly.

In Scotland much less so.

when I hear Audrey I think coronation street!

I am sure the new generation will just go for the cooler Audrey Hepburn and it will become super popular again

Harry has been popular again since Prince Harry in mid 80s (?)
