Why do designers think all mothers of brides are stuck in 1977?

Dd is getting married next June. I have just started having a look around. I'd like a trouser suit, think cate blanchet.

What I'm finding is more Rita from corrie back in the day.

Where can I find a beautuful, stylish trousers suit. Dd would like us to coordinate with the bridesmaids who will probably be in baby blue.

Help.

If you are googling Mother of the Bride Outfit, that’s likely what the search engine thinks is appropriate.

I would try Zara. The blazer in this is oversized which might not suit? www.zara.com/uk/en/straight-leg-linen-blend-trousers-p03535709.html?v1=448418504&v2=2419753

Stop looking at anything labelled mother of the bride on fashion websites?

Just set your filters to trouser suits.

Trousers with matching jacket:

Alice + Olivia pleated stretch twill trousers

I didn't think about not actually looking for motb. Rookie error. Not done this before.

Yeah I wouldn’t even google / look at anything that’s specifically MOTB. Just shop normally. Look at every shop you can think of…!

I have but I'm not normally a dressy kind of person.

I've looked at
Karen millen
Coast
Phase eight
Wolf & badger
John lewis
Monsoon
Selfridges
Reiss

If anyone else has any websites I'd love to take a look.

Cos do some excellent separates

Tallulah and Hope - dresses and jumpsuits (I get comments on clothes I have from them all the time)

Sezane - though not always great if you’re on the shorter side

essentiel Antwerp - some of the stuff is pretty bold (read: mad) but also lots of gorgeous statement clothes that have a Cate Blanchett vibe

Brunocatmon · 08/06/2025 14:52

Thank you very much

I love the suits at the Fold, Massimo Dutti, and Mango turns up some lovely suits.

Boden has a pink linen suit I'd love to wear to a wedding.

I've just stumbled across The fold so will take a look.

I'd steer clear of linen though, if I were you. It crumples and creases like nobody's business.

Yes, do avoid stating ‘mother of the bride’ or you’ll be directed to horrible salmon-pink suits.

I asked a John Lewis personal shopper for help for DD’s wedding - it was likely to be hot, so I just wanted a really nice - not frumpy or old-ladyish! - dress - no sleeveless or very short sleeves, nothing too short or tight (I was 67).
She couldn’t find me anything remotely suitable. In the end I found a dress online from Poetry.

blueshoes · 08/06/2025 15:55

The Fold is gorgeous. Not for shorties.

I agree with not googling for Mother of the Bride. Those outfits tend to range from 'Tory Party Conference' to 'The Queen Mother at Ascot'.

I did the same for Ds wedding last year, it looked more like grandmother of the bride as it was stuff my mother would be wearing.

This is absolutely stunning. I think I'd go with long sleeves for the service though as I have lots of arm tattoos. Very happy to take my jacket off later on though.

I know right. What is it with designers?

Just make sure it’s super comfortable and if you are even slightly menopausal go prepared with sanitary protection because if there’s ever a day for inconvenient flooding it will be that day if you are wearing a light coloured trouser suit.
And get a good size handbag - you’ll need it
