Why do designers think all mothers of brides are stuck in 1977?

Dd is getting married next June. I have just started having a look around. I'd like a trouser suit, think cate blanchet.

What I'm finding is more Rita from corrie back in the day.

Where can I find a beautuful, stylish trousers suit. Dd would like us to coordinate with the bridesmaids who will probably be in baby blue.

Help.

If you are googling Mother of the Bride Outfit, that’s likely what the search engine thinks is appropriate.

I would try Zara. The blazer in this is oversized which might not suit? www.zara.com/uk/en/straight-leg-linen-blend-trousers-p03535709.html?v1=448418504&v2=2419753

That says sunday morning lay in, I'm off to make a cup of tea.
Why the heck would anyone think that is stylish?

Def better than the first 'I'm going back to bed look', this is a nice outfit and love the colour.

I also want to wear a trouser suit so found a vogue pattern of the type I want and will have it made. That way it will be in the material I want and hopefully fit me well!

Now this, is a great idea.

I would say most Mothers of the Bride feel a million dollars in the outfits they choose. Horses for courses, you do you etc. but I'd personally dial down the bitchiness on this.

As for suits, not sure of your budget but Hugo Boss lovely, I see the Fold has also been mentioned.

On the blue - I wouldn't;t say you need to match - in fact exact match might look a bit odd, just being a light-ish blue to fit in with the theme should look fine. Think about what group photos will look like.

We're not looking to match,my dd would like us to coordinate.

Watching this as I'm in a similar situation, dd getting married next year and is going for a fairly formal vibe, though she says don't worry about it, wear what you like. Some good inspiration on here for me, reassured a bit more now!

My goal is to be slim and fit enough to fit into Me&Em suits by the time my daughter gets married!

I didn’t look at anything that shouted MOB.
wore a designer dress that I bought in the sale long before the wedding. I had a lovely blue suit for the civil wedding in Zara.

Why are trousers in all links wide-legged? Is that all that's available right now? I despair

Brunocatmon · 10/06/2025 12:00

That's beautiful 😍

I didn't think about not actually looking for motb. Rookie error. Not done this before.

Hobbs
LK Bennett
Holland Cooper occasion dresses.
Personal stylist at John Lewis ( my mum is only 4'10 and used the stylist in Cheltenham for both grandson's weddings.) Not a hint of boxy, stiff, horrid jackets, sleeveless nonsense.

My DS's wedding was yesterday I wore a lovely Hobbs dress, navy with embroidered flowers all over, I got tons of compliments!

For my DS’s wedding in April I too wore a gorgeous Hobbs dress, pale pink silk, with matching accessories, I have never had as many compliments. They really do have some lovely occasion clothes don’t they?

Stop looking at anything labelled mother of the bride on fashion websites?

Just set your filters to trouser suits.

Trousers with matching jacket:

Alice + Olivia pleated stretch twill trousers

So true. Anything with the label ' Mother of the Bride' is usually frumpadelic to the extreme.

And I remember Rita from Corrie in a green flared crimplene trouser suit.

Also as a PP said, Me and Em will probably have just the vibe you're looking for, also expensive but beautiful quality, Bella Freud depending on your budget.

Go to John Lewis and have a session with a stylist - can do suit, headwear and shoes in one go
