Why do designers think all mothers of brides are stuck in 1977?

Dd is getting married next June. I have just started having a look around. I'd like a trouser suit, think cate blanchet.

What I'm finding is more Rita from corrie back in the day.

Where can I find a beautuful, stylish trousers suit. Dd would like us to coordinate with the bridesmaids who will probably be in baby blue.

Help.

I also agree that not googling motb outfits is the answer. But the question still remains, why does anybody think that mothers of the bride suddenly want to dress like their grandmothers?

bridgetreilly · 08/06/2025 17:32

If the bridesmaids are in pale blue, personally I would avoid what is bound to be a slightly different shade of pale blue. Maybe a mid-blue? But if you can get a scrap of their fabric or at least a photo with reasonably accurate colour, use that to help you see what co-ordinates well and what clashes jarringly.

Hello @Brunocatmon my mum had the same problem when I got married last year. She ended up getting a lovely outfit that was from a few different ‘shops’ within John Lewis. I think it was part Ted Baker, part Reiss and maybe with a whistles jacket (winter wedding). Maybe have a look at John Lewis online. We used to crack up laughing looking at MOTB outfits online, one of my fondest memories prepping for my wedding ❤️

Oh this is a good idea. Never thought of getting a swatch. Thank you

Just make sure it’s super comfortable and if you are even slightly menopausal go prepared with sanitary protection because if there’s ever a day for inconvenient flooding it will be that day if you are wearing a light coloured trouser suit.
And get a good size handbag - you’ll need it

Oh gosh do I have to use a handbag? I never use a bag. 😲

Yes we've been having a giggle with mother of the groom too. Whiled away many an evening.

Oh that's gorgeous.

Pink.bag, pink belt, pale blue shoes, a statement necklace and you'll rock it! Have a wonderful time!

I got a really nice dress from Monsoon and a dress coat from Per Una. The MOB outfits I looked at in local shops were horrific, I was 44 at the time not 77!!

My DS's wedding was yesterday I wore a lovely Hobbs dress, navy with embroidered flowers all over, I got tons of compliments!

Shibumi make custom size silk jackets and trousers so may be worth a look for something a bit different. https://www.shibumistyle.com/blogs/customers
has photos of their clients wearing their products. Also do off the shelf if you’re a regular size.

I would avoid trying to match to the bridesmaids as if you get it wrong, it would look odd. Maybe a different pastel colour for the actual suit with the top underneath being the baby blue to match the bridesmaids

Agree. I would coordinate rather than match.

Yeah we're not matching, mother of groom and I are going to coordinating. X

@Lotsofpots Oh bloody hell - I wasn't going to buy a new outfit for a wedding I'm going to this summer and now you've introduced me to Tallulah and Hope.... on one hand thank you, on the other my credit card is not going to thank you!

AzurePanda · 09/06/2025 08:54

I’m absolutely flummoxed by the whole MOTB thing too - why on earth anyone would want to suddenly wear enormous frills and ruffles is beyond me. The links on this thread are lovely.

huntersmum · 09/06/2025 10:59

I was a MOTB at Easter and wore a lovely dress from Rixo. Quite floaty, long sleeves. Had lots of compliments.

Renabrook · 09/06/2025 11:02

Why not just wear a normal nice outfit why these days do you have to be 'mother of' anyone in a fashion way

DBD1975 · 09/06/2025 11:03

Totally agree, mother of the bride outfits, are hideous and people wear them way to tight, with hideous fascinators and feet squeezed in to high heeled shoes they can't walk in (just my opinion).
At the same time I wouldn't go for a trouser suit, too formal and difficult to dress up.
I also don't like the trend in terms of mother of the bride wearing long dresses similar to the bridesmaids (with too much flesh on show).
I would be looking at The Pretty Dress company online. Their dresses are fabulous, really good quality, fit true to size and come in a range of colours.
Good luck OP and enjoy the day.

moose62 · 09/06/2025 11:11

I also want to wear a trouser suit so found a vogue pattern of the type I want and will have it made. That way it will be in the material I want and hopefully fit me well!

joanofaardvark · 09/06/2025 11:16

I would say most Mothers of the Bride feel a million dollars in the outfits they choose. Horses for courses, you do you etc. but I'd personally dial down the bitchiness on this.

As for suits, not sure of your budget but Hugo Boss lovely, I see the Fold has also been mentioned.

On the blue - I wouldn't;t say you need to match - in fact exact match might look a bit odd, just being a light-ish blue to fit in with the theme should look fine. Think about what group photos will look like.

DBD1975 · 09/06/2025 11:42

This dress is stunning OP, it was from H&M a few years ago, you won't be able to get it now but I would be thinking about having one made along the same lines.
