I'm ill in bed and bored. Mines a slow cooker. I don't like stew or casserole, I know you can cook lots of things in it but I never use it. What's yours?

My daughter and others rave about doing meat joints in the slow cooker. I tried a piece of lamb once - absolutely vile and inedible

Bose noise cancelling ear pods. I can't get them to stay in my ears .

That reminds me of my Loop earbuds that are always recommended on here. Mine kept popping out even with the smallest earpiece. Turns out I have very narrow canals and I can't even use earplugs 😥

How did you cook it ?
I just put my lamb joint in as it was with salt and pepper, no water and it cooked it beautifully.

RaraRachael · 09/06/2025 13:07

Yes that's exactly how I did mine too. Goodness knows what went wrong with it.

TheSandgroper · 09/06/2025 13:23

Slow cookers are good for

  • Christmas pudding, both when cooking it and reheating it.
  • 3 ingredient Christmas cake
  • Beetroot
  • Quince
  • Oranges doing first cook for marmalade or orange and almond cake.

Interesting - I love slow cookers - use them all the time. They make fab curries!

I love my slow cooker and use it a lot too. Currently the smell of chicken stock from yesterday’s carcass is wafting up the stairs after cooking overnight. I’d love to know what recipe book you have though, as I’m always on the lookout for a good one. x

@Lollipopsicle
I have 2 books by Judith Finlayson
The Healthy slow cooker and The 125 Best Vegetarian slow cooker recipes.
Both used all the time

Silentsongs · 09/06/2025 20:41

Just popped on to say that I used my slow cooker for the first time ever today because of this thread. Came back from work this evening to a great smelling kitchen and dinner was lovely. Definitely going to use again next week.

Yay, welcome to dark side.

I'm personally responsible for at least 3 people buying a slow cooker.

@RaraRachael maybe it was the lamb that was off?

@TheSandgroper (Are you a WA native) also good for making suet puddings and to keep things warm on a buffet.

ToutesetBonne · 10/06/2025 07:21

Another one here who has resurrected her slow cooker :-)

A handy gadget for taking the skin off a whole pineapple, coring it and cutting it into rings all at the same time.

It was chuffing useless. I don't even like pineapple that much.

It was a Lakeland special at one point - white plastic thingy. A lot of us fell for that one, you're not alone!

Robot vacuum.
Having to move the chairs to stop him getting stuck and keep rescuing him was more annoying than just vacuuming myself. So now Nigel is enjoying his retirement in the corner of the lounge.

TheSandgroper · 10/06/2025 08:53

@sashh yes, I’m a local. I have the toes to prove it and all.

Yes this
only works well if you have all flat hard flooring with no rugs or more than a few pieces of furniture

my car vacuum kit was a waste, just ended up using proper house one

I hadn't heard it used for years. My aunt was a £10 pome so my cousins fit the description too.

Why?

There is maybe one day a year when I regret I did not buy one.

Personally, I found it noisy, bulky, and ugly.

It’s really the only way I can get any sleep on a really hot night

@Cyclebabble

  1. I can't believe you took the spoons back because of the staining you caused.
  2. I can't believe John Lewis capitulated and gave you a refund even though it was completely your fault, not the manufacturers

What rubbish. A decent and expensive spoon set ahould be able ro survive one curry.

I’ll check out that brand thanks as I really wanted it to be good!

Ninja air fryer. Something about the smell of the heating element turns my stomach

My DD says that about ours (Tefal ) she doesn't like the smell.
DS loves it and uses it most days

I've had one for 9 years. It only smells when it needs a clean!
