Caught doing 87 on an A road - stupid - what will happen?

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:40

We were on holiday, road was empty and we were rushing to get to a check in.

Just got home and received a scary letter in the post from the police.

I know it was monumentally stupid. Will write back immediately saying yes it was me.

I’ve never had a speeding fine - can’t believe I was so stupid, I never usually speed.

What will they do - will I lose my licence?

I am absolutely terrified of speeding because I'm not a confident driver when it comes to motorways or new areas and as I get older, I feel I am getting worse, especially when children in the car so I can't speak from experience as I haven't had a fine. However, I imagine by other people I know getting fines, it will be 3 points and £100 fine. The only person I know which is someone I work with who got 6 points, was someone doing 55 in a 30. There's a big difference there and I thought they would have been banned. I really don't think it's uncommon for people to do 90mph on motorways, I'm not saying it's right but I see this all the time. There is a 70mph dual a road that I have to go down regularly and I go around 55 in the left lane (probably not great either!) whilst people speed past way over 70 in the right lane. This happens every single time I'm on it. Like I said, I don't think it's right but this is a regular occurrence. They were probably policing the speed on that road because it is a known road for people going over the limit.

Such a selfish and irresponsible thing to do. Shame on you.

DappledThings · 31/05/2025 21:33

Arsehooooole · 31/05/2025 21:30

A dual carriageway i.e 2 or more lanes with a national speed limit sign is a 70mph.

A single carriage way with a national speed limit i.e county lane 60 mph.
Unless on these roads it's stated otherwise

How hard is this to understand for the majority of posters, it's quite staggering how you lot have driving licences

Dual carriageway is NOT related to the number of lanes. You can have a road with two lanes in either direction and no central reservation which makes it a single carriageway. You can also have a road that is one lane in either direction and has a central reservation which means it is a dual carriageway.

Stop being a drama queen. The OP has said the letter says - ‘70’ mph speed limit, so she wasn’t doing 30mph above!

That information wasn’t available when I wrote my post.

A roads in UK are 60. You were clearly not being an observant but a dangerous driver.
Is this where you live?

That’s not true. Some are 70.

Dual carriageways are 70 & are A roads

moto748e · 31/05/2025 21:34

Bearing in mind that speedos run optimistic in cars, a recorded speed of 87 mph would have showing as well over 90 on the speedo.

cestlavielife · 31/05/2025 21:37

You need speed awareness course it might teach you something

Igotupagain · 31/05/2025 21:37

Max will be 6 points and always accompanied with a fine that is proportional to your wages/income
I think anything more than 10miles over the limit excludes option of driving course

Booboobagins · 31/05/2025 21:39

@Speeding87stupid We all do stupid things once in a while - i call them brains farts - and anyone who is so judgemental that they wish you ill, well, they're clearly a saint (not)!

But, you didn't have an accident, you're contrite and you have a good record, so please stop beating yourself up.

Someone else has suggested 3 points a small fine and a course - this is something you can accept and not go to court but youll need to wait to hear from the police. Anyways hoping thats the outcome, it sounds reasonable to me. Pay the fine, accept the points and pay and attend the course and carry on like you've been driving for years - within the speed limit. X

Larksatdawn · 31/05/2025 21:40

Looks like it is a Band A which is 3 points and a fine. Here are the guidelines - you are very fortunate not to have been going 4mph faster!

Speeding (Revised 2017) – Sentencing

Serencwtch · 31/05/2025 21:40

If you plead guilty you are most likely to get a fine & points on your license (unless you already have speeding points)

Generally doing 40 % over the speed limit would result in an immediate ban so you would need to be doing well over 90mph (on a 70mph dual carriageway) to be banned

Learn from it & make sure it never happens again & move on.

You hope I lose my licence? Is that really necessary of you?

Better than somebody losing their life though? Which is what you were prepared to risk, isn't it?

daisychain01 · 31/05/2025 21:42

Speeding87stupid · 31/05/2025 20:45

Oh really, I hope so as it’s a prosecution letter.

My husband was caught doing 37 in a 30 and got points and a speed awareness course.

Is it because I was so much over the limit?

You won't be offered a speed awareness course, not for that speed.

All written warning letter that come through the post are worded as prosecutions.

you would only be at risk of losing your licence if you already have 6 or more points on your licence

SmallGoddess · 31/05/2025 21:42

TheaBrandt1 · 31/05/2025 21:32

Why on earth would you not take specialised advice if you get a court summons? Such weird advice not to.

It's not a court summons. It's a notice requiring the registered keeper of the car to identify the driver. Once she has done that she'll get another letter informing her of the next step (points/fine or speed awareness).

ByLoudLimePlayer · 31/05/2025 21:43

it does sound like your only upset because you have been caught.

frozendaisy · 31/05/2025 21:44

3/6 points on licence and a fine
plus increased insurance for 5 years you will need to let insurance know OP otherwise they could not pay out because it’s your responsibility to tell them

it’s a mistake and you will pay money cash for it

stupid yes but it’s not the end of the world

Teaandtoastserveddaily · 31/05/2025 21:44

Spirallingdownwards · 31/05/2025 21:29

I suspect you were going a higher % over the speed limit to get 6.

Was on the M1 on a 70 section

CoughCoughLaugh · 31/05/2025 21:44

I lost a family member who was just 20 years old due to speeding. I hope they throw the book at you. There isn't an excuse in the world that excuses 17 miles over the limit. There is no road in the UK that has a speed limit of more than 70mph. What made you think that it was aceptable to drive at 87mph?

I know the A64 in North Yorks really well and despite that, there is absolutely no way that I would drive at 87mph on it. And if you were caught at that, by the static cameras on there, you were defnitely driving MORE than that at other points as they are strategically placed at dangerous places where someone who didn't know the road would naturally slow down.

You could have rung the place you were checking in at and explained you were running late and I'm pretty sure they would have helped you out. The "rule" is there as a guidance but there are almost always exceptions.

TheSilentSister · 31/05/2025 21:45

The A64 in Yorkshire is notorious for speeding. I know. I was stationary when a motorcycle slammed into me. No skid marks, no avoidance, pure and simple speeding. I was pulled over, half on, half off the road and then heard this 'bang'.
Police said it happens all the time, roads are long and winding and drivers just let rip.
Let it be a lesson to you OP. I don't mean that patronising but I think things happen for a reason. Take it on the chin and learn from it. It could have been much worse.

BadgersSuitcase · 31/05/2025 21:45

I’m the roads policing manager for a police force.

it’ll be court as it’s over the threshold for speed awareness courses etc but it won’t be a ban.

It is dependant on the actual force what they do but you can generally expect 6 points and a fine through the court

socasuallycruelinthenameofbeinghonest · 31/05/2025 21:46

I’ve been done for speeding several times - you always get the scary looking letter first which just makes sure they’re got the right person (eg whether it was you or someone else driving your car) - once you send that back you’ll get another one - equally scary but will probably just give you 3 points and a small fine. It sounds too fast for the speed awareness course (which costs the same as the find but avoids the points) but it’s not fast enough for solicitors, court and 6 points / £1000. I got done doing 57 in a 40 so arguably worse that you and just had that.

Also send your letter back registered post - I didn’t once, just put in the regular mail and they never received it and then I got a REALLY shitty letter later threatening court but luckily it eventually got sent back to me somehow so I had proof i had at least tried to send it!

also ignore all the judgments on here. I doubt very many of them are ALWAYS AT ALL TIMES under the speed limit, and you can still be a shitty dangerous driver even if you’re always under the limit.

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 31/05/2025 20:57

I don't think you need to be this nasty.
A747 could have landed on the roof of her car, it didn't.
She could have won the lottery tonight, she didn't.
She'll pay the fine and get the point or do a course.

Not winning the lottery isn't a risk to someone else's life though is it?
Speeding like that puts others in danger and not just the OP

Does that mean you could get a ban for doing 42 in a 30mph? As you get a course in our area for 38mph in a 30 (which is 30+approx 27%, by my calculations)
