Do you clean your house in a specific order?

I mean when you deep clean, not tidying. My mum came today to help me clean because I'm pregnant.

I start with whatever is worst and then work my way to mine and DPs room. I always finish with our room because it’s the least bad and I can shower and get my nice pyjamas on, finishing on a thrilling high.

My mum cleans starting at the top room on the right hand side of the house (top right hand corner) and work round and down from there. She’s done this in every house she’s ever lived in, and she said “clean from top to bottom, top of the house to bottom of the house”.

I’m just curious if you have a set order and if you do why.

Yes on the first day of spring, the second day of summer, the third day of autumn and the 4th day of winter 😂

AzureShark · 31/05/2025 20:22

Always ground floor first - because tbph the chances of me doing the whole house in one go are slim so I'd rather ensure at least downstairs is done.

I start by cleaning all the windows/doors downstairs. It's a fucking awful, boring, shitty, thankless task that I hate and I'd rather get it all done out the way.

Then I go room to room and I start with the smallest, easiest room/area because the mental tick of completion spurs me on. Completion means everything, including hoovered and mopped.

My order is:

  • Front porch
  • Utility room
  • Downstairs loo and side hallway
  • Main hallway
  • Our bedroom (mine/dh's room is downstairs...it's very small)
  • Kitchen
  • Living room
  • Dining room

The dining room is always the worst by far. It's the area that collects accumulated crap and stuff and we have two keyboards/three monitors at one end which I hate cleaning.

Yeah I always work top to bottom, dust and dirt falls as you move so makes sense to me.

Yes

bathroom, then bedrooms and landing, stairs, hall downstairs, lounge, dinning room and kitchen last. Everything gets dumped in the kitchen as I clean, then it all gets sorted at the end

2025mustbebetter · 31/05/2025 20:26

I can't clean it all in one go due to adhd and chronic pain. I always always do the kitchen first, then bathrooms. Hoovering always comes last and often doesn't get done. My bedroom is a once every few months event!

RubyRoo29 · 31/05/2025 20:27

Always got told to start top to bottom so start upstairs in our bedroom and work my way out to by the back door

MeetTheGrahams · 31/05/2025 20:29

I do top to bottom, top on day 1 and downstairs day 2

InTheWindow · 31/05/2025 20:40

Depends on the house and how it’s used a bit I think. I do my tiny cottage - kitchen (including floor), dusting everywhere, shower room (including floor), hoover everywhere. Windows, skirtings and ceilings done about once a month at start of cleaning. The houses I clean for work get done in a slightly different order.

IsThisLifeNow · 31/05/2025 20:44

No as I never do it all in 1 go. We've got quite a big house and 2 young kids, but in my old house I used to do top to bottom missing out the bathroom, then do it last before showering

GetOffTheCounter · 31/05/2025 20:49

I clean the kitchen then the larder which houses the microwave. Then I empty the bins. Then I do the hallway and the downstairs toilet. Then I make the beds, put on a wash and iron the previous wash. I tidy the sitting room, put away any dry clothes that are on the rack. Then bathroom sinks and the Dcs rooms. I hoover and mop as we go.

After dinner I listen to the Archers and stack the dishwasher and wipe everything down and sweep the floor again.

It just keeps things ticking over really. Our house is quite cluttered so even though I do the above every single day it still does not look immaculate.

Giraff3 · 31/05/2025 20:51

I start ground floor and work up as il always have stuff that needs to go Back upstairs.
So:
Living room, dinning room, kitchen, hall, stairs, bathroom, bedroom, landing and 2nd bedroom

AutismMum2021 · 31/05/2025 20:52

Start at the top floor and work my way down. Usually takes me 3/4 days

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 31/05/2025 20:52

Kids rooms, living room, kitchen, our bedroom, bathrooms, hallway - might seem odd but with our layout it works

SwedishEdith · 31/05/2025 20:53

Are people doing all of this stuff in one day?

UseNailOil · 31/05/2025 20:54

I do the kitchen first.
Then lounge
Downstairs loo
Bathroom - and change towels
Our room - and change bed
Then hoover everywhere

God, I hate housework.

BellyPork · 31/05/2025 20:57

No, I don't clean my house at all if I can help it.

CloudyPortal · 31/05/2025 21:01

I start in the kitchen and dining room, then living room, then bedrooms from messiest to least messy, then clean bathrooms, then clean all the floors and hoover, then utility room and understairs cupboard comes last if there's time.
I do that daily usually and deep clean a little bit at a time as I'm doing the daily tidying rather than one big deep clean.

BeyondMyWits · 31/05/2025 21:06

Lol.... here it goes
Kitchen
Bathroom
Living room
Give up.

Then next week
hall/stairs/landing
Half arsed go at bedrooms.

My tenacity with housework has diminished along with my eyesight and capacity to care about it..

LaMarschallin · 31/05/2025 21:12

I follow the Flylady thread on MN which concentrates on a different room per week so I never end up needing to do a deep clean of everything at once.
I think if I regularly had a deep clean once or twice a year, I'd start in a different room each time. Otherwise I can see myself running out of steam in the same place every time and eventually having to saw that part of the house off.

Cynic17 · 31/05/2025 21:13

What the hell actually is a deep clean? I never hear this phrase in real life, only on here!

Catsandcannedbeans · 31/05/2025 21:16

SwedishEdith · 31/05/2025 20:53

Are people doing all of this stuff in one day?

If my kids were here I could never do it in one day, but me and DP will swap so one week I take kids he cleans next week he takes kids I clean. Technically this was his week but I wouldn’t subject him to cleaning with his MIL for a full day. That’s just mean 😂.

SparkyBlue · 31/05/2025 21:17

Kitchen first as it’s always manky then the bathroom followed by living room
then whatever I have the will to do

monktasmic · 31/05/2025 21:21

I have 3 hours of cleaning a week- she does upstairs first (bathrooms and landing - we do our own bedrooms) and then dusts and vacs her way downstairs. Starts at the back of the house in the kitchen then does the dining room and office (if we are not working) then the front room. She does windows one week and the fridge the next (it’s always bustingly full) then mops herself out the front door.
we keep on top of tidying / plumping / and sorting as we o. DH does a daily fettle in the kitchen every night - I do the bathrooms daily (as they look like the Somme some days when the kids have been in there)

B0D · 31/05/2025 21:23

Upstairs one week, downstairs the other

BlueOysterCultGroupie · 31/05/2025 21:23

I don't deep clean as such, just try and keep on top of things as best I can... tomorrow will be whole house pull it together before it's back to school/work, but I often split the whole house over Sat&Sun to make it more manageable.

I start earlier in the day with the quieter things, so that's bathroom, downstairs loo and kitchen. Then hoover the carpets, then dusting last.
