Do you clean your house in a specific order?

Catsandcannedbeans · 31/05/2025 20:08

I mean when you deep clean, not tidying. My mum came today to help me clean because I'm pregnant.

I start with whatever is worst and then work my way to mine and DPs room. I always finish with our room because it’s the least bad and I can shower and get my nice pyjamas on, finishing on a thrilling high.

My mum cleans starting at the top room on the right hand side of the house (top right hand corner) and work round and down from there. She’s done this in every house she’s ever lived in, and she said “clean from top to bottom, top of the house to bottom of the house”.

I’m just curious if you have a set order and if you do why.

What the hell actually is a deep clean? I never hear this phrase in real life, only on here!

Edited

I also want to know the answer to this.
It sounds like what people are calling deep cleaning is what I would call cleaning.

It's more than wiping the kitchen benches down and shoving some bleach in the toilet presumably but it never sounds like what I think a deep clean might be where, for example, every book comes off the bookshelves and the bookshelves are washed, allowed to dry, every book is dusted and goes back on. Or every single cupboard in the kitchen is emptied, cleaned and then everything put back in (or dumped if I don't need it any more)

Midnightlove · 31/05/2025 22:22

I start downstairs as first priority. Kitchen gets messy quickly and our dog lives downstairs. Then if there's time I'll do upstairs.. visitors don't go upstairs, so makes sense to have that as a lower priority 😂

TranceNation · 01/06/2025 07:02

I rarely do a conventional full deep clean. Only before Christmas or if the Queen is coming to visit. I'm more of a bits and bobs here and there sort of person. When I do a full clean though I start with the kitchen - get the worst out the way first. Then hoover downstairs, dust living room, hallway, clean utility room, clean downstairs loo. Then move upstairs full hoover through, clean bathroom, and finish with the bedrooms.

I’m the opposite of your mum and clean from bottom to top 😂

I start in the kitchen and dining room, then living room, then bedrooms from messiest to least messy, then clean bathrooms, then clean all the floors and hoover, then utility room and understairs cupboard comes last if there's time.
I do that daily usually and deep clean a little bit at a time as I'm doing the daily tidying rather than one big deep clean.

Bedrooms? Daily?

This thread is making me feel seen and inadequate all at the same time!

Yes

bathroom, then bedrooms and landing, stairs, hall downstairs, lounge, dinning room and kitchen last. Everything gets dumped in the kitchen as I clean, then it all gets sorted at the end

That’s what I do too, always have done it that way!

363838dhdi · 01/06/2025 07:17

Not really - I clean in a very haphazard and ad hoc fashion!

I do follow a certain order within rooms, e.g. I dust before hoovering (common sense stuff) but the order of rooms is pretty random.

I hate cleaning the bathroom so I usually do that when I know I can have a shower immediately after so that I feel fresh again.

Natsku · 01/06/2025 07:20

I don't deep clean all in one go (or at all...) but when I do a proper vacuum and mop I always start in the playroom, then to the lounge, then the kitchen, then hallway and downstairs loo, then the stairs, then my bedroom, then DS's bedroom, then the landing and bathroom. DD does her own room.
Haven't done it for ages though because OH has taken over cleaning duties but he does not do it in the "right" order so I have to make sure I don't watch him clean or it drives me crazy.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 01/06/2025 08:02

I start with the worst /most work so kitchen, bathroom, loo, then the other rooms are a quick dust and vacuum.

Beds are changed on another day.

To me a deep clean would include the oven, fridge, cleaning cobwebs out of the top corners, stuff like that.

I have lived in this house 8 years. The windows have never been cleaned. I might put a brush attachment on hoover and do skirting once in a blue moon. I have no routine to my housework which is done when I feel like it. Hoovering is never more than once a week. Housework is massively over rated and I am not surprised that women constantly fall out with husbands over it as most women spend far too much time cleaning stuff and expect husband to have similar standards when it is not same priority to them!! Sorry, I know that is not relevant to thread but just an observation.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/06/2025 08:19

No. I don't do a 'deep clean'. I just clean, and rarely fo it all in one go. Usually I do some and dh does some.

Bedrooms? Daily?

This thread is making me feel seen and inadequate all at the same time!

By doing the bedrooms I mean putting away toys, collecting drink glasses up, making the beds and putting the laundry away (put it in a pile by their door in the evening) it takes about 5-10 mins per bedroom room max usually because of doing it daily.
I hoover daily because one of the DC had allergies to everything so try to minimise dust. It doesn't look like it needs doing so would probably do it twice a week if not for that.

purpleygrey · 01/06/2025 08:39

I move everything into the right room. Then I clean in the same order as your mum.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/06/2025 09:01

No particular order - though anything looking particularly dusty/grim will be first.
Generally it’s limited to what my DM called ‘a quick vacuum, dust and tidy’ - and possibly more if guests are coming to stay, though I don’t invite the sort of people who are going to be inspecting the skirting boards for dust.

I certainly don’t do housework every day, except for keeping the kitchen, sitting room and downstairs loo looking OK.

bravenewworld12 · 01/06/2025 09:05

I always start with downstairs. Kitchen, utility, dining room, hallway, downstairs toilet, living room, then I move upstairs to the bathrooms and finish with the bedrooms. Same as you I like to shower and put fresh pjs on after a clean, then I feel amazing.

TheCurious0range · 01/06/2025 09:13

Tidy and put away first, start downstairs because some of DS' toys will have invariably migrated and if I tidy upstairs first I end up bringing stuff up and doing it again. Then kitchen, then bathroom, empty bins in bedrooms into the bags from the kitchen take them out, then dust down then up, hoover down then up and then polish down then up, clean floors kitchen and bathroom roll have been mopped when doing those, I tend to mop my way onto the sofa with a cup of tea then put my feet up while it dries.
In reality DH does most of this on his day off and I have no idea what order, but he leaves bathroom until last, because I often went up doing it when I get in and he's finishing off the other bits or getting dinner on. I then do the bigger jobs on my day off, cleaning windows, fridge, washing machine, oven etc. My planned job this week is to clean the sofas and rugs with the shark cleaner and wash the cushion covers.

FalseSpring · 01/06/2025 10:00

My order is: Bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, kitchen.

Always start upstairs and work down towards the kitchen which is last to be done. I find stuff abandoned around the house to be washed up, rubbish and bins to go down etc so it seems logical to me. Finishing in the kitchen means that I do any washing up etc before cleaning the worktops and taking out the bins.

MellowPinkDeer · 01/06/2025 10:02

Vaxtable · 31/05/2025 20:25

Yes

bathroom, then bedrooms and landing, stairs, hall downstairs, lounge, dinning room and kitchen last. Everything gets dumped in the kitchen as I clean, then it all gets sorted at the end

I start with the bathrooms too!

Mymanyellow · 16/06/2025 18:43

Upstairs first. Spray the bathroom. Clean both beds, ones a spare so that’s a quick dust open the window. Clean bathroom. Bring down any glasses and dirty washing. Put a wash in. Tea break.
living and dining are one room. Then kitchen last.
washing out when it stops. Then hoover all over.

blackheartsgirl · 16/06/2025 18:46

I usually start with the kitchen first, then hall, stairs, bathroom and landing. Front room is rarely used so that’s always last. The dining room is like a disaster zone so I shut the door and pretend it doesn’t exist

Screamingabdabz · 16/06/2025 18:54

I wonder if you ever find a thread like this on male dominated forums? 🙄

CremeEggThief · 16/06/2025 18:56

No I don't, but the way your mum does it is probably the right/ traditional order in which to do it.

Ohmych · 16/06/2025 19:07

I start down stairs and do kitchen, dining room, living room, hall, stairs, bedrooms, bathroom then landing.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 16/06/2025 19:13

I’ve never once cleaned the whole house in one day. I do it all as I go along so never really felt the need to. I ‘deep clean’ a room a week.

Bryonyberries · 16/06/2025 19:15

Upstairs washing - ie strip the bedding and get a load started. Then collect anything from upstairs that needs washing (mugs from teens rooms). Then do the living room, dust, hoover etc. Then bathroom and toilet (they are downstairs). Kitchen last and this is usually the biggest job. Once kitchen is clean take up anything that needs to be upstairs (ie laundry). Do bins then mop kitchen floor. Then do upstairs dust and hoover and stairs.
