What things made you realise you are old (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Very lighthearted before any pounces with age being a privilege etc. Im actually only 47 and am quite comfortable with aging. That disclaimer out of the way... what things did you used to think only "old people" do but now do yourself?

I never understood a fancy soap being a treat. Now I love going to TK Maxx and smelling the soaps before carefully choosing one to keep in my underwear drawer until I need to use it. It really is a treat!

I own and love Celtic and Co booties. I've had my current pair about a year. Im in the process if slowly going vegan and Im genuingely concerned about what I can replace these with when they eventually die.

Choosing comfortable clothes. Now this is difficult for me. Im not very confident about how my body looks right now so Im having to really fight the urge to just stop caring about clothes at all. Also, as someone who is short and fat, casual relaxed clothes will almost always look scruffy, not stylish.

An early learning moment for me was decades ago, when the family gathered around the newest member of our little tribe. I was holding the little bundle of joy while others sat around the room. I neatly folded myself into a seated position on the floor which triggered the baby to cry, so I just as neatly and quickly shot up to standing. My father commented on my knees. Slow forward a few decades, I have so much sympathy!

I was making the oof sound when getting up and down from seated, but made myself stop doing that. I've been called ma'am. I often get invited on to busses 1st, when I'm the 2nd to arrive at our little bus stop. Young people feel it's safe to smile at me. The white eyebrows bug me - can't pluck them, because I want eye brows in the future, but they are also wayward!

When I was the only one who could explain to a class what a florin, a half crown a shilling, and a farthing were. Also £ s d.

Someone posted on Facebook last week asking if anyone could identify a coin they had found. It was a Victorian penny. They were still in circulation when I was a child!

My eyebrows look like Archbishop Rowan Williams if left to their own devices. I even have a couple of curly ones!

The last time I went to get them done as a salon the lady literally laughed at them. Yes, I know they are ridiculous but when I'd already said I was self conscious about them and my whole eye area, that was just rude.

I use an electric bikini trimmer to keep them neat and dye them. The dye can be a bit unpredictable because it's on white hair but it never lasts and no ones eyebrows are a uniform colour anyway.

People recommend Just for Men on eyebrows instead of eyebrow dye but Im a bit nervous to.

Looking forward to “a nice cup of tea” at home after I’ve been and about.

Being happy about “a lovely day for drying” and getting lots of laundry done

MerylSqueak · 28/05/2025 09:36

I do like a nice jigsaw.

ThereIsACatOnMyLapAgain · 28/05/2025 09:37

I was bought some "nice jam" for Christmas. At first I thought, that's a bit of an odd present. But then, the more I thought about it, the happier I became about it. 🤣
It's still an odd present but I like it and hope the person buys me more jam this year.

Make up never looks right, I used to be able to do it in a couple of minutes and it was fine but now I spend much longer and think it's OK until I see my face in a normal mirror and not the magnifying one and it looks crap.

When you see a pic in a post of an old man's eyebrows and take it as possible inspiration for how to style eyebrows!

Realising that I was born closer to the war than the year I'm living in

That happened to me as a teenager and I'm only 64.

On said birthday realised that I was now the age of the Beatles song When I'm 64. Hair has lost its fullness. Chin hair checked daily.

Mind you I'm happy to have reached this age. RIP to those close who didn't x

When my daughter wrote at school “my parents were born in the late 1900s”

That's hilarious.

placemats · 28/05/2025 12:07

Want to add that apart from my 30s, my 50s was a decade I loved.

Om83 · 28/05/2025 12:14

Also… I catch my self saying things along the lines of ‘in my day…’ about videos/tapes, using an actual landline phone, explaining to my kids how we texted before smartphones using the numbers….

fun quiz- think how you would mime how to answer the phone, then ask your kids how they would do it- let me know!!!

When I see someone post about “a generational thing” which seems perfectly normal to me.

I had Now That's What I Call Music 6.

Off to google the track list...

Edited

I find them all on Spotify 👍

gezzab33 · 28/05/2025 14:23

If I'm on a bus and someone's playing music or repeated stupid TikToks really loudly, I will go over and tell them to stop. Not been punched yet but I know it becomes more likely the more I do it.

Just SPF and eyeliner for me!

That's hilarious.

When they write “my parents were born in the mid 1900s” it is!

Allseeingallknowing · 28/05/2025 14:27

Going round my local museum and seeing an old washing machine like I had when first married, and other old familiar items.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2025 14:28

Went to a garden centre and quite enjoyed it. Ditto a new appreciation of gardens.

ThePinkRobin · 28/05/2025 14:29

Just SPF and eyeliner for me!

I've decided that generally speaking we go from a looking better without makeup phase of life (teens and 20s) to looking better with makeup (30s, 40a, 50s) to again looking better without it (60s+).

I am definitely SPF, eyebrow touch-up, mascara, and that's it, folks.

RoseLavenderBlue · 28/05/2025 14:37

At the Co-op last year when I was 52 - the cashier asked me if I was eligible for any discounts I.e. the over 60’s discount on a Tuesday! I made a note to self to avoid shopping there again on a Tuesday if I could help it, save it happening again.

MDTdottyT · 28/05/2025 14:37

Just about everything in my lifestyle.
I prefer a cup of tea in the evening rather than anything alcoholic.
I hate the thought of going to a pub to socialise much rather have a daytime cup of coffee.
If anyone asks me to go out anywhere in the evening I would rather be tucked up in bed with my husband and dogs watching TV
My idea of a great time out is going to a car boot or garden centre

TaranFollt · 28/05/2025 14:48

I can't relate to the music on Radio 1 at all.
Also, when I fill in forms online and it comes to dob- I scroll and scroll downwards , like I'm playing with a fidget spinner, until I eventually find my birth year.

OneSillyEagle · 28/05/2025 14:50

Watching TV programmes surrounded by adverts for fuss free funerals, mobility scooters and reclining chairs that swing forward to help you get up.
