What things made you realise you are old (tongue firmly in cheek!)

Very lighthearted before any pounces with age being a privilege etc. Im actually only 47 and am quite comfortable with aging. That disclaimer out of the way... what things did you used to think only "old people" do but now do yourself?

I never understood a fancy soap being a treat. Now I love going to TK Maxx and smelling the soaps before carefully choosing one to keep in my underwear drawer until I need to use it. It really is a treat!

I own and love Celtic and Co booties. I've had my current pair about a year. Im in the process if slowly going vegan and Im genuingely concerned about what I can replace these with when they eventually die.

Choosing comfortable clothes. Now this is difficult for me. Im not very confident about how my body looks right now so Im having to really fight the urge to just stop caring about clothes at all. Also, as someone who is short and fat, casual relaxed clothes will almost always look scruffy, not stylish.

Sensible trainers with gel soles which are comfy and give plenty of support to look after my feet. I have no problems with my feet and that is the way I want to continue.

When I physically shuddered at the thought of attending a music festival.

I bought a new dishwasher and am thrilled with it! It cleans so well compared to my old one, I’m so pleased with it I’ve been mentioning it to family and friends! I feel very old being so chuffed with it.

I’m also thinking of buying my first electric bike, the hills are getting too hard going at the age 45!

what brand dishwasher is it please?? I’m just watching to change ours..

rubbishtv · 27/05/2025 20:41

Bunions, fingers hurt when writing, far less hair on my legs when shaving, groaning getting out of chair!!

SummerySunshine8 · 27/05/2025 20:42

I need to pluck my chin twice a month
I want a tea set for my birthday
I slept funny last month and couldn't turn my neck to the left for a week
I need to have subtitles on, no matter what I'm watching
I recently found myself anxious about passing a group of teens.

I'm 30 next month. 80 at heart.

InterruptingRabbit · 27/05/2025 20:44

I just read a nice article on a beginner’s guide to composting.

PoisedNewt · 27/05/2025 20:51

A 30 something work colleague telling me that “I was the coolest old person that I know” and that was 10 years ago!

Seeing 90s clothing described as “vintage”

See also: finding MANY items you used to own/wear in a swanky (I.e. overpriced) vintage shop.

🤣 me too

Not just the chin hair but the inability to grasp it with tweezers unless shining a torch on my chin 😩

Letsgodancing · 27/05/2025 20:56

For people in their 30s it's knowing Harry Potter is getting a redo for the next generation ! Probably to grow up with the show as we did with books and movies

VerbenaGirl · 27/05/2025 20:59

First came the interest and then sheer joy in gardening. Next came the fascination with any new bird visiting said garden.

Pricelessadvice · 27/05/2025 20:59

When I fell over and had to sit down for a few minutes because of the shock.
Gone are the days of leaping up before anyone sees!
I remember hearing a loud thud and realising that was me hitting the floor. Falling over as you get older is actually quite traumatic!

Apparently, Gen Z are getting into teapots! I had my first bone china teapot for Christmas with matching teacup and saucer and love it! I use a tea cosy and the tea stays hot for an hour. No more forgotten mugs of tea that get cold

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 27/05/2025 21:05

I had my face lasered which dealt with the chin hair! It suddenly dawned on me that I’d been thinking about it for years and ought to do it before the hair turned white and laser wouldn’t work.

Interest in gardening has definitely not struck yet, and I’m in my 50s.

Supersimkin7 · 27/05/2025 21:08

Neck aging’s such a huge change, isn’t it.

I can’t get over the numerous festoons dangling off my jaw, newly complemented by a rippling pink frill under the chin.

I’m bloody glad I’m younger than Bernard Mathews RIP.

We love our Bosch dishwasher. It has a pull out tray at the top for cutlery which saves space.

Zo33 · 27/05/2025 21:17

Not having a clue who any of the nominees are at the Brits.

Zo33 · 27/05/2025 21:19

And obviously when you describe falling as “I had a fall”

Slipperfairy · 27/05/2025 21:46

The mole hairs on my chin have turned white.
I'm like Billy goat fucking gruff.

That moment when I looked around the staff room and realised that the crop of newly qualified teachers were born more than five years after I started teaching.

My chin hair.

I now have an IPL thingy and chin hairs have gone! Wish I’d bought it years ago for legs etc but it was the chin hairs that helped me justify the cost 😂 (I’m 43 and it’s like I hit 40 and the greys started coming, chin hair spouting and weight gain started).

BoredZelda · 27/05/2025 21:53

Waking up, feeling a pain and wondering if it is one that’s there all the time now.

Being on a work project, renovating a building I was part of the team when it was actually built.

Seeing stuff I used to own in beamish behind glass.

My childhood family crockery is in the Castle Museum in York!!

Explaining to DD that my grandparents didn't know that I'd been born for a few hours because they were out when DDad rang them!

BrandyandGinger · 27/05/2025 21:59

I'm Irish, so Leo Varadkar made me feel very old by becoming Taoiseach while being quite a few years younger than me.

There are toys that my DH's much younger brother used to have in our local museum, never mind ones from our own childhood.
But the worst was probably when my DD was doing A level history, 10 years ago now, and Thatcherism and the Miners' Strike were on the syllabus. That's not history, it's practically current affairs!

😂 your DD is the same age as my son. He also did the same history syllabus. To add insult to injury my DD was 10 and in primary school and she was doing the 1980’s in history 🤣!
